(Ri)leggere Guttuso. percezione, realismo, impegno civile
This paper aims at showing the analogies between Hans Blumenberg’s Metaphorology and George Lakoff & Mark Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory. Starting from the analysis of the proportion for which ABSOLUTE METAPHOR: METAPHORICAL EXPRESSIONS = BACKGROUND METAPHOR: CONCEPTUAL METAPHOR, we propose to compare Blumenberg’s Metaphorology with Lakoff & Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory, outlining similarities and differences in reference to: (a) the fundamental notions on which the two theories are based, (b) the methods and (c) the relationship between language-thought-culture assumed by the two theories. However, the reconstruction of the relation between the two theoretical paradigms is not an end in itself as we will show that the two research paradigms could be integrated to overcome problematic aspects present in both theoretical perspectives
Della Crocifissione di Guttuso in dialogo con il Trionfo della morte e Guernica
This essay explores Renato Guttuso’s Crocifissione (1941) as a powerful example of expressive innovation in 20th-century painting. Situating the work within the context of Fascist Italy, it examines how Guttuso reinvents the crucifixion (using the Guernica and the Triumph od Death XIV) motif as a modern, secular symbol of political oppression and human suffering. The analysis highlights the artist’s use of expressionist techniques, dynamic composition, and fragmented bodies to evoke violence and anguish, drawing a parallel between religious imagery and contemporary atrocities. By rejecting academic traditions and embracing a politically engaged realism, Guttuso transforms a sacred theme into a universal cry against injustice
Performance of Understanding: Pragmatics and Fast and Frugal Heuristics
What determines the meaning of an utterance is a logical matter and as such must be treated independently of the bio-cognitive constraints that operate in our bodies. This thesis, whose great supporter was Frege, implies a clear notion of rationality that seems not to bear comparison with what we know on the limits of our rationality. Various theories (Kahneman and Tversky 1983; Gigerenzer et al., 1999), thematizing the need to consider our rationality beginning from the bio- cognitive constraints that our body imposes on a mass of information, can be of great utility for facing the problem of what type of rationality operates in phenomena of linguistic understanding (Ferreira and Patson 2007; Christiansen and Chater, 2016). From this picture it will clearly emerge that understanding is a performance of human organisms that cannot be described without considering the effective bio- cognitive constraints at work in our actions
introduzione a Linguaggi e istituzioni. Discorsi, monete, riti
Introduzione a "Linguaggi e istituzioni. Discorsi, monete, riti" numero monografico di RIFL 2014. Nell'introduzione gli autori, problematizzando il nesso tra le nozioni impiegate nel titolo, spiegano le ragioni del numero monografico
Negation as a window on the non-sequential nature of language interpretation and processing
In this article, I have proposed that there are instances of negation that are valued at the interpretive interface. This entails that these negations have a head-status syntactically and that they, though not interpreted as a standard sentential negation, can scopally interact with other negative elements realized in the same structure. I also proposed that this negation (optionally realized phonologically in some languages) is nothing else that the hidden sentential negation advocated by C&P for FC-structures. My analysis lends thus support to C&P’s analysis of negation and any-phrases. It also shows that alleged ‘expletive’ negation is not an outlandish PF-phenomenon but is deeply rooted in the properties of the interpretative systems for natural language
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
