Rheological Investigation as Tool to Assess Physicochemical Stability of a Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Filler Cross-Linked with Polyethylene Glycol Diglycidyl Ether and Containing Calcium Hydroxyapatite, Glycine and L-Proline
Background: Dermal fillers are commonly used in aesthetic practice and their rheological characterization is of much interest today, as well as the stability study of the finished formula against external stimuli of a different nature (biological and physicochemical). Rheological tools have been exploited to characterize the physiochemical behaviour of a hyaluronic acid (HA) based dermal filler subjected to different thermal conditions over time. The collected results provide an index of its rheological stability. (2) Methods: After a preliminary Amplitude sweep test, the Frequency sweep test was performed in order to study the stability of a HA dermal filler cross-linked with Polyethylene Glycol Diglycidyl Ether (PEGDE) and containing Calcium Hydroxyapatite (CaHA), Glycine and L-Proline subjected to different conditions. Also, a shear rate ramp test was performed in order to investigate the filler’s flow behavior. (3) Results and Conclusions: G’ (elastic modulus), G” (viscous modulus) and consequentially tan δ (tangent of the phase angle) show a similar trend at different thermal conditions, underlining that the product is not affected by the storage conditions. The viscosity of the dermal filler decreases with an increasing shear rate, so a non-Newtonian shear thinning pseudoplastic behavior was demonstrated in all tested conditions

Expression of Langerin/CD 207 and α-smooth muscle actin in ex vivo rabbit corneal keratitis model
The constant exposure of ocular surface to external environment and then to several microbial agents is often related to the pathogenesis of various inflammatory eye disorders. In the present study α-Smooth Muscle Actin (α-SMA) and Langerin CD/207 expression and function was investigated in a rabbit corneal keratitis. The inflammation was induced by the secreted form of glycoprotein B (gB1s) of HSV-1, in an ex vivo rabbit corneal model. α-SMA is often used as a marker for myofibroblasts. In this study, for the first time, we show α-SMA positive corneal epithelial cells, during HSV-1 cornea inflammation, demonstrating a crucial role in wound healing, especially during remodeling phase. Furthermore, we show the presence of Dendritic Cells Langerin CD/207 positive, located mainly in the basal epithelial layer and in corneal stroma during the inflammatory processes. Our result validating the ex vivo organotypic rabbit corneal model, for the study about pathogenesis of HSV-1 ocular infection
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Continuous infusion of endostatin inhibits differentiation, mobilization, and clonogenic potential of endothelial cell progenitors
Purpose: We investigated the effect of endostatin on differentiation, mobilization, and clonogenic potential of circulating endothelial cell (EC) progenitors, and whether the effect of endostatin was improved by continuous infusion (CI) versus bolus administration.
Experimental Design: Four-color flow cytometry and clonogenic EC cultures were used to study EC progenitors in tumor-free mice, tumor-bearing inummodeficient mice, and inummodeficient mice xenotransplanted with human bone marrow (BM) cells.
Results: Endostatin significantly reduced the number of circulating EC progenitors in tumor-free BALB/c mice. The effect of endostatin on EC progenitors was enhanced significantly in mice treated with CI drug treatment. When immunodeficient mice xenotransplanted with human BM cells were treated with CI of endostatin we observed a significant decrease in the engraftment and differentiation of human BM-derived EC progenitors. Numbers of circulating EC progenitors increased 7-fold in inummodeficient mice bearing human lymphoma. In this preclinical model, treatment with CI of endostatin inhibited host murine EC progenitor mobilization and human tumor growth. Furthermore, the clonogenic potential of EC progenitors was impaired severely.
Conclusions: Endostatin is a potent inhibitor of the mobilization and clonogenic potential of human and murine EC progenitors, and its preclinical activity is increased significantly in CI compared with bolus administration. These observations might be useful in the design of future clinical trials
