What have we learned?
Debate over the potential and efficacy of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 arose at the moment of its first consideration, continued right through the President’s signature, and shows no sign of diminishing. In cosidering the impact of the Act five years later, three central issues emerge: competition, regulation, and access. The original publication is available at: http://newmillenniumresearch.org/archive/schement.pd
Dancing with Napster: Predictable consumer behavior in the New Digital Economy
The Internet is often characterized as a "disruptive technology," as recently argued by the music industry against Napster and by Sony against PC emulations of its PlayStation. Three questions are raised: 1) How much does the Internet replace traditional media? 2) As another information channel, does the Internet supplement traditional media? 3) How much do Internet users navigate the Web in order to download relevant information goods (news, music, movies) as part of their consumption and purchase strategies?Data from the Pew Internet and American Life Project are used to test two competing hypotheses: 1) Easily copied and distributed digital content encouragesconsumers to exploit the "information wants to be free" character of the Internet, thereby hampering the growth of the market for information goods and services, and 2)Information consumers practice a sophisticated arbitrage process across different media, by weighing the value of online and offline information and thereby reinforcing active participation in the electronic marketplace. The efforts of the music industry to obstruct the downloading of MP3s may represent a serious misunderstanding of consumer arbitrage practices, much as book publishers characterize library use as a threat to book sales. Policy implications of thiswork extend into ongoing public and corporate policy debates about digital content and intellectual property. The original publication is available at: http://www.stanford.edu/group/siqss/itandsociety/v01i02/v01i02a11.pd

An event history analysis of time to degree completion
In an era of increasing demand for college, declining fiscal resources, and the rising costs of undergraduate education, student retention and graduation, especially timely graduation, are important issues facing American higher education today. As state and federal lawmakers, accrediting agencies, and governing bodies demand more accountability for retention and graduation rates from college and university administrators, it is important to develop a better understanding of college student graduation behavior at the institutional level. The study of college student retention and persistence to degree completion has been plagued with methodological problems and inconsistent findings, especially when the longitudinal nature of the process is considered. Event history analysis is a regression-like technique that allows researchers to investigate the timing of graduation while addressing many of the concerns associated with the longitudinal study of college graduation behavior, such as censored cases and time-varying variables. The present study used event history analysis to understand the temporal dimensions of graduation and the factors that affect whether students succeed or fail, particularly at the study institution. Pre-enrollment, enrollment, and financial aid variables were used to model the timing of graduation for three cohorts of first-time, full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students for a six year period. Consistent with other studies employing event history analysis to student retention and degree completion, adding a time dimension improves our understanding of event occurrence. The present study also provides support for the strong relationship between the longitudinal effects of academic performance while in college (as measured by cumulative GPA) and graduation.Ph.
Non-Violence or Violence ? Stratégie Alternatives for Radical Change in South Africa, by Reina R. Steenwijk
This article discusses the options open to black South Africans in their struggle for liberation and especially the consequences of choosing the path of violence as against non-violence. Front a European viewpoint, South Africa seems already to be in the grip of violence, and the question should be asked as to the aims and effectiveness of this, which the ANC seeks to escalate. It can only degenerate into senseless and uncontrollable chain-reactions. The author considers that in spite of the présent situation, non violent options do have a role to play if catastrophe is to be avoided.
Reina María Rodríguez (Havana, 1952) is today one of the most important Cuban poets that has won National Literature Prize in 2013 and Pablo Neruda Prize in 2014. From her beginnings in the late 70s, her creation has been characterized by the proteiform spirit that has led her poetry to prose and to narrative. This is also reflected in the combination of text and images in literary constructs of difficult classification. This article aims to follow the path of the author of the verse to prose, by identifying the books of transition and analysis of those books of prose and those with visible narrative elements. It is the budget of this article also draw attention to other creative side of Reina Maria Rodriguez, highlighting the values of the horizontal writing and show some of their main features, to give clues, create interest and encourage debate on the narrative of the author, less studied to date unlike his poetry.
Manuel Reina (1856-1905) was a cosmopolitan author who assimilated literary models from outside Spain through his translated and original texts. In the essay that follows, we study in an exhaustive manner a part of his production that has been forgotten by literary criticism, that is, his work as a translator; and, furthermore, we group together for analysis, following a chronological reading that ranges from the first to the last writings in his literary career, the poems by Manuel Reina that provide evidence of the reception of the new French lyric poetry, of his advance from Romantic postulates towards Parnassianism and Decadentism, and of his contribution to the modernist aesthetics.
The present study, carefully edited, already announces in its title a very precise description of its subject. It is preceded by another, published in 2012 (La música en la Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor de Talavera de la Reina durante el siglo XVIII), in which the same author revealed the existence, until then little or not known, of an intense musical activity linked to the collegiate church and focused, even from several centuries ago, on a fully constituted chapel. The half century from 1800 to 1851 was a period of clear decline for the music chapel of the Collegiate Church of Talavera de la Reina, as for many others in Spain:
