Use of UV-C radiation as a non-thermal process for liquid egg products (LEP)

No full text
The efficacy of short wave ultraviolet light (UV-C) as a non-thermal process for liquid egg products (LEP) was investigated. Non-pathogenic Escherichia coli strain (ATCC 8739), which shows lower sensitivity to UV-C light than E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella typhimurium, was chosen as a target microorganism. The inactivation of UV resistant strain of E. coli in LEP was examined by evaluating the effects of depth of liquid food medium (0.5, 0.3 and 0.153 cm), UV light intensity (1.314, 0.709 and 0.383 mW/cm2) and exposure time (0, 5, 10, and 20 min) by using a collimated beam apparatus. The best reduction (>2-log) was achieved in liquid egg white (LEW) when the fluid depth and UV intensity were 0.153 cm and 1.314 mW/cm2, respectively. Maximum inactivation was 0.675-log CFU/ml in liquid egg yolk (LEY) and 0.316-log CFU/ml in liquid whole egg (LWE) at the same conditions. The kinetics of UV inactivation of E. coli in LEP was nonlinear. Our results emphasize that UV-C radiation can be used as a pre-treatment process or combined with mild heat treatment to reduce the adverse effects of thermal pasteurization of LEP.TÜBİTAK Project No. TOVAG-104 O 210 and the Department of Food Engineering, İzmir Institute of Technology, (İYTE-38

11th National Congress of Biostatistics -- MAY 27-30, 2008 -- Malatya, TURKEYAnkarali, Handan Camdeviren/0000-0002-3613-0523; Ankarali, Seyit/0000-0003-3752-0846WOS: 000272760100003Objectives: We examined the test properties about mean and mean differences, sampling distributions properties of mean and standard deviation, especially when the sample size is lower than 10 and the variable has normal distribution in population. In addition, we aimed to construct a 95% bootstrap confidence interval for skewness and kurtosis values in various samples sizes. Materials and Methods: In our simulation study, 10,000 samples with replacement were taken from the standard normal population Various sample sizes were evaluated Data which were obtained from an animal study were used for comparison of t-test's and Wilcoxon sign test's power in small sample. Results: According to our results, sampling distribution of skewness coefficients has normal distribution, however, kurtosis coefficients have positively skewed distribution. A bootstrap confidence interval for these coefficients by using these sampling distribution can be used for normality test Moreover, it was shown that test statistic for the mean has t-distribution in all studied sample sizes Conclusion: We can say that distribution shape of the variable plays a more important role than sample size in selection of appropriate test statisti

Women With a Movie Camera: a Non-Fiction Film on Six Female Directors of Turkey

No full text
In Turkey, women have started making films in the 1950s. Since then, women of different generations and socio-cultural backgrounds have been contributing to our cinema industry and culture. The short non-fiction film Women with a Movie Camera documents six of Turkey's women filmmakers. Through one-on-one interviews with Zeynep Dadak, Canan Evcimen, Biket İlhan, Merve Kayan Leyla Özalp, and Handan Öztürk, the film focus on these directors' personal experiences of working in a male dominated industry. At the same time, by way of using excerpts from fictional films, the film questions the subjects' performativity in front of the camera, as they talk about their testimonies.Türkiye'de kadınlar film yapmaya 1950'lerde başlamışlardır.

Prevalence of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma in a Rural Adult Chinese Population: The Handan Eye Study

PURPOSE. To estimate the prevalence and associations of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) in a rural population of northern China. METHODS. In a rural county in Handan, China, 6716 adults residing in 13 villages were randomly selected and participated in the study. All participants completed a comprehensive eye examination, including intraocular pressure (IOP), slit-lamp examination, and fundus evaluation. Visual fields were obtained with on glaucoma suspects. RESULTS. Sixty-five persons (1.2%) had POAG, with an adjusted prevalence of 1.0% (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.7% - 1.3%) in those aged 40 years and older. Sex was not significantly associated with POAG (P > 0.05). Age (odds ratio [OR], 1.9; 95% CI, 1.4-2.5, for each 10-year increase), IOP (OR, 1.5; 95% CI 1.2-2.0 for each 5-mm Hg increase), axial length (OR, 1.3; 95% CI, 1.1-1.6), and moderate myopia (3.1-6.0 D; OR, 4.7; 95% CI, 1.6-13.5) increased the risk for POAG in multivariate analysis. The mean IOP of persons with POAG was 16.3 +/- 3.5 mm Hg, and 90% of them presented with an IOP <= 21 mm Hg. Of those with POAG, 4.5% were blind from glaucoma in at least one eye. CONCLUSIONS. Approximately 1% of adults aged 40 years and older living in rural China have POAG. As seen in other populations, increasing age, higher IOP, greater axial length, and having myopia were associated with POAG. Given the rapid aging and myopic shift (acquired myopia) in China's population, POAG is likely to increase in prevalence in the coming decades. Methods: Eighty-five eyes of 85 patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy underwent primary standard three-port vitrectomy with 20-gauge instruments and phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation for vitreous hemorrhage from 2008 to 2011. The main outcome measures were visual outcomes and surgical complications. Results: Forty patients were male and 45 were female. Their age ranged from 40 to 77 years with a mean of 59.6 years. The mean follow-up was 13 months, with a range of 6–48 months. The preoperative logMAR visual acuity changed from 2.62 ± 0.6 to 0.8 ± 0.7 postoperatively. Postoperatively, visual acuity improved in 79 eyes (92.9%), and did not change in six eyes (7.1%). Intraoperative complications were transient corneal edema (five eyes) and posterior capsular rupture (one eye). Postoperative complications consisted of transient intraocular pressure elevation (25 eyes), corneal epithelial defects (six eyes), anterior chamber reaction (four eyes), hyphema (two eyes), posterior synechiae (four eyes), vitreous hemorrhage (23 eyes), retinal tears (five eyes), retinal detachment (one eye), and neovascular glaucoma (one eye). Conclusion: Our study suggests that the combined operation of pars plana vitrectomy, phacoemulsification, and intraocular lens implantation is safe and effective for patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy. We believe that the visual outcome and complications depended primarily on underlying posterior segment pathology and were not related to the combined procedure technique.
