The pandemic crisis narrated by the populist radical right parties. The cases of the Lega per Salvini and the Rassemblement National
One of the characteristics of populist communication is the staging of crises. In particular, populist radical right parties (PRRPs) often communicate a sense of looming crisis by naming real or imagined threats. In light of the recent pandemic crisis, an event that disrupted the ordinary and opened a space for discursive competition, we aim to answer the following questions: what crisis narrative did PRRPs offer? Is it possible to identify a populist articulation in their crisis narratives? Were there differences from their own previous political discourses and the narratives of other similar PRRPs? We propose a qualitative analysis of Facebook posts made in 2020 by the leaders of the Lega per Salvini in Italy and the Rassemblement National in France, Matteo Salvini and Marine Le Pen. We show that the two leaders used a combination of two main strategies: distraction from the crisis by politicizing other issues and maximization of the crisis by identifying enemies and victims. Their crisis narratives had many similarities due to their shared membership of the PRR family and their competitive position as challenger parties but they also had differences that depend on their identity specific characteristics
Campaigns and regimes: party characteristics, political transformations and the outcomes of populist governments
The growing success of populist parties in western democracies has generated lively academic debate surrounding the changes this populist wave has created in various political systems. These parties have demonstrated their ability to shift from protest to governing parties, consequently shifting experts' attention toward the effects of populism in power on democratic institutions. In light of examples in South America and Easter Europe, scholarly debate has centered on concerns that populist governments will deform democracy and democratic institutions, limit institutions and reduce both checks and balances and pluralism. Here we argue that in the context of a consolidated western democracy, populist governments identify themselves with government 'as usual', and that the populist ascent produces a greater impact on the political system as a vehicle for protest than it does on institutions once in power. We analyze the three examples of populism represented by the 5 Star Movement, Podemos and La Republique En March in order to examine the transformations produced by their successes in their relative political systems and their various effects on institutions once in government
Experimental Analysis of the Mechanical Response of Masonry Columns Partially Confined with PBO FRCM (Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Mortar) Composites
An experimental investigation on partially PBO (short of Polyparaphenylenebenzobisthiazole) FRCM (Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Mortar) confined clay brick masonry columns has been conducted. Ten small-scale specimens measuring 445 mm high with a square cross-section of the 250 mm side have been tested under monotonic axial loading until collapse. Two columns were unconfined, while the remaining ones were confined with single-layer PBO FRCM jackets varying the geometric configuration along their height. The vertical spacing ratio sf’/sf, being sf’ and sf the center-to-center and the net spacings between two consecutive jackets, respectively, was considered as the key parameter of the confinement configuration. The failure modes, stress–strain curves and peak axial stress and strain values are reported. The experimental results have been compared to the predictions of models found in the Italian guidelines CNR DT 215/2018 and the American ACI 549-R20 standards. The main aspects analyzed involved (i) the evaluation of the effectiveness of partial confinement on the mechanical response of columns, (ii) the definition of the mechanical and geometrical parameters that influence the structural response of partially confined columns, and (iii) the development of appropriate analytical models for the prediction of the resisting capacity of masonry columns partially confined with PBO FRCM
The Potential Impact of Banking Crises on Public Finances: An Assessment of Selected EU Countries Using SYMBOL
This paper presents an application of the SYMBOL model, recently developed by the European Commission, in assessing the potential impact of banks’ crisis on public finance in four EU Member States. Results show that two Member States have a relatively high probability of being in the situation where government finances have to cover losses generated in the banking systemJRC.G.3 - Econometrics and applied statistic
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Pricing multiasset equity options: how relevant is the dependence function?
In this paper we test how different choices for the dependence function can affect the prices of a set of multiasset equity options. We conduct the analysis for various five-dimensional baskets of UK shares, and a wide range of payoffs for the multiasset options, consistent with the instruments traded on the market. We also test the relevance of the dependence specification over both volatile and quiet market scenarios. Interestingly, we find that, in most circumstances, the choice of a dependence structure richer than the standard linear correlation does not seem to affect option prices significantly. However, the dependence function becomes more relevant in particularly
volatile market conditions, as well as for some payoff structures.JRC.DG.G.9 - Econometrics and applied statistic
