Stabilizing a previously centrally planned economy: Poland 1990
We examine the dynamics of the January 1990 stabilization programme in Poland, focusing on the substantial and sudden collapse in industrial output, and inflation persistence. We discuss three, non-mutually exclusive, explanations of these phenomena: excessive initial stocks of inventories, an exogenous fall in household demand and tight credit. We conjecture that tight credit was at centre stage: it helped to magnify the fall in output, and to coordinate such a fall across sectors. We base such a conjecture on the existence of substantial credit segmentation, and on the underdevelopment of private credit markets. This conjecture is further strengthened by the fact that wages increased, and even went beyond the programme's ceilings, as credit expanded during the year. We argue that the wage hike may be the reason why credit expansion did not result in a major output recovery, and inflation persisted during the year. There are discussions of this article by M. Burda and G. W. Kolodko, pp 209-212. -from Author

Hydraulics of a physical model of supercritical vortex drop shaft
Vortex drop shafts are special drop structures typically installed in urban drainage systems or rarely as spillways for hydropower plants. The knowledge about the hydraulic behavior of vortex drop shafts was improved over the years but some gaps still have to be filled, with particular concern to the hydraulic aspects of the intake structure and of the vertical shaft. In this paper, an experimental campaign on a reduced-scaled physical model of vortex drop shaft serving an urban sewer system is described. Free-surface observations were used to characterize the hydraulics of the spiral inlet at the head of the shaft. A computational procedure based on the momentum approach is applied to derive velocity and flow rotation angle profiles over the vertical shaft. Such hydraulic features are fundamental into the design of a vortex drop shaft. If they are known with a sufficient reliability, then the energy dissipation efficiency of the shaft can be easily derived
Welfare implications of Calvo vs. Rotemberg pricing assumptions
This paper compares the welfare implications of two widely used pricing assumptions in the New-Keynesian literature: Calvo-pricing vs. Rotemberg-pricing. We show that despite the strong similarities between the two assumptions to a first order of approximation, in general they might entail different welfare costs at higher order of approximation. In the special case of non-distorted steady state, the two pricing assumptions imply identical welfare losses to a second order of approximation. Hacia un nuevo Fiat Lux: María Zambrano y Agustín G. Calvo en diálogo
The main purpose of this research is to initiate a lively and enriching conversation with two
distinguished twentieth century thinkers, María Zambrano and Agustín G. Calvo. For these
authors, there can be no true liberation or awakening from the long nightmare of History, without
a radical questioning of some basic beliefs that conform our Western Culture such as the
concept of individual or the concept of democracy. Throughout this study, we will try to
analyse the contradictions inherent to the formation of the mass-man and the States, which both
Zambrano and García Calvo strove to unveil guided by that common yearning to get out of
bewilderment and embrace a new clarity, a new Fiat Lux.Con la presente investigación pretendemos entablar una conversación viva y enriquecedora
The Impact of Administration and Inquiry on Rorschach Comprehensive System Protocols in a National Reference Sample
We investigated the impact of administration and inquiry skills on Rorschach Comprehensive System (CS; Exner, 1974, 1991, 1993) protocols collected for the Italian adult nonpatient reference sample. The same research team collected CS protocols on two occasions. The initial reference sample (N = 212; Lis, Rossi, & Prina, 1998) was collected under the supervision of experienced psychologists who carefully studied CS administration and scoring procedures (Exner, 1986, 1990, 1993). The second sample (N = 101; Lis, Zennaro, Calvo, & Salcuni, 2001) was collected after the team obtained additional and sustained CS training from Rorschach workshops certified instructors. Both samples were scored, reliably but they showed large differences on many codes, with protocols from the second sample being richer and more complex than the first. The results indicate that administration skills can have a dramatic impact on CS protocols and may contribute to variations in samples collected by different investigators. Training standards should be devised to insure uniform administration procedures are followed when collecting CS protocols
Calvo vs. Rotemberg in a Trend Inflation World: An Empirical Investigation
This paper estimates and compares new-Keynesian DSGE monetary models of the business cycle derived under two different pricing schemes - Calvo, Rotemberg - and a positive trend inflation rate. Our empirical findings (i) support trend inflation-equipped models as better fitting during the U.S. great moderation period, (ii) provide evidence in favor of the statistical superiority of the Calvo setting, and (iii) suggest the absence of price indexation under the Calvo mechanism only. Possibly, the superiority of the Calvo model (against Rotemberg) is due to the restrictions implied by such pricing scheme for the aggregate demand equation. The determinacy regions associated to the two estimated models indicate relevant differences in the implementable simple policies. Our findings call for the development of monetary policy models consistently embedding a positive trend inflation rate and possibly based on a Calvo pricing scheme
Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo y la Transición exterior: la prioridad europea
Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo played an important role in Spain’s transition to democracy, serving as minister and later prime minister. His political career was closely linked to Foreign Affairs and to the process of the “Foreign Transition” as he liked to call it. This paper, largely based upon his personal archives, analyses his thought, and how his idea of Europe played an important role in the formulation and execution of his policy. Calvo-Sotelo’s ideas and achievements are compared with those of other political leaders of the time, such as Adolfo Suárez and Felipe González. The conclusions show the nature and characteristics of Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo’s pro-European ideas.
