Block processing on multiprocessor DSPs for multimedia applications
The paper explores software development for multiprocessor DSPs for data parallel local algorithms. These algorithms are very common in multimedia applications, such as filtering, compression and so on. Multiprocessor DSPs are very attractive for this application since they offer performance typical of parallel machines together with limited cost. The paper provides performance analysis and software design issues according to different data partitioning models. As a case study, performance evaluation has been carried out on the Multimedia Video Processor from Texas Instrument
Computational models for image processing for shared-memory multiprocessors
Different tasks in image processing exhibit different computational requirements that should be considered with respect to the architecture. This is particularly critical in parallel machines where many parallelization techniques, as data partitioning and mapping on processors, use of shared memory space, exploitation of pipelining with pre-fetching affect dramatically the performance with a strong relation with algorithm and architectural parameters. The paper defines computational models for tightly-coupled multiprocessors with crossbar architecture, both for data-parallel local algorithms and for global algorithms such as spatial transformations. To solve the intrinsic memory limitations of low-cost, highly integrated systems, the paper proposes to extend the classical block processing model by analytically modeling also the case of multiple processing stages. The models have been compared in detail and have been efficiently adopted for optimizing performance in block processing on crossbar multiprocessors for low-level computer vision applications

Angle deviation changes in early and late postoperatory following strabismus surgery
The aim of this study is to evaluate the angle changes and evolution in the postoperatory time and to establish the relationships between them. 146 patients, (medium age 14.17 +/- 15.73 sd), 80 cases of esotropy (ET, range +70(Delta) to +14(Delta)), 48 of vertical deviation (VD, range 25(Delta) to 12(Delta)), and 18 of exotropy (XT, range -70(Delta) to -12(Delta)), underwent strabismus surgery. All patients were evaluated prospectively at I week, 2 and 6 months following surgery. Overall patients presented a variation of angle deviation during the follow up, which calculated with the Anova variance test was significant (p<0.05). The relationship between the mean angle value at I week and the mean angle value at 6(th) month was significant (p<0.05). In our experience, the significant variation within 6 months shows the need of a longer period for final surgical outcomes and for further squint surgery
Liquid chromatography–negative ion atmospheric pressure photoionization tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of brominated flame retardants in environmental water and industrial effluents
We describe the development of a liquid chromatography with negative-ion atmospheric pressure photoionization tandem mass spectrometric (LC/NI-APPI/MS/MS) method for the simultaneous determination of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) and five polybrominated diphenyl ethers (BDE-47, BDE-99, BDE-100, BDE-153 and BDE-154) in water. A mobile phase methanol/acetone/water was used, where acetone acts also as dopant. NI-APPI produced precursor ions corresponding to [M?H]? for TBBP-A, [M?Br+O]?, and [M?2Br+O]? for the BDE congeners studied. Each compound was quantified operating in multiple reaction monitoring mode. Linearity was observed in the range 0.025–10 ng injected for all compounds. Coefficients of determination R2 ranged from0.9934 to 0.9982. BDEswere poorly retained by solid-phase extraction (SPE) from river water and sewage treatment plant effluent, thus liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) by n-hexane should be used for these samples. The recoveries of TBBP-A and PBDEs from tap water (SPE), river water and industrial wastewater (LLE) were in the range of 81–88%, 78–92%, and 43–99%, respectively, with relative standard deviations below 17%. The limits of detection, based on signal-to-noise ratio of 3, ranged from 0.004 to 0.1 ng injected, and method quantification limits were 0.2–3.3 ng L?1 but BDE47 (20.3 ng L?1). Only TBBP-A was found in a treated industrial sewage at 4 ng L?1, while BDE-99 and BDE-100 were detected on suspended solids
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
