In the short story “Teoria do Medalhão”, written by Machado de Assis in 1881, a zealous father decides to give good advices to his son who just turned 21 years old. Using a speech that represents the official ideology of the eighteenth century, created by the dominant hegemony, including the France of Balzac’s time, the father suggests that the son abandons his ideals, using masks and annulling his thoughts and tastes to become a true Medalhão. The dialogue that is established between both of them is surrounded by irony and humor, because the father makes an apparently wise speech, which is, actually, empty and fool, leading to think about the concepts of parody and carnavalization by Bakhtin. Besides that, when he built a story in dialogue form, Machado de Assis transfers the word to the characters, in a crossing of voices that makes us think about “embryos” of polyphony. This work aims to make a bakhtiniana reading of the machadiano short story, “Teoria do Medalhão” in opposition to the novel Le Père Goriot by Balzac.
Marina Colasanti (09/26/1937) is the author of a vast body of Brazilian literature, always flirting with different textual genres, such as short stories, chronicles, essays and poems, targeting both an adult and children's audience. Its theme also deals with a variety of subjects, however, one can perceive as constant the presence of the feminine, of female figures, multifunctional figures, which allow us to glimpse, even when in a wonderful setting, a construction of feminine that resonates in reality. Marie NDiaye (06/04/1967) is one of the great names in contemporary French literature, author of novels, novellas, short stories, plays and literature aimed at young people and children. Despite dealing with different themes in her work, NDiaye also uses the experiences and perceptions of “being a woman” as poetic material, proposing a perspective of social denunciation. Through studies of comparative literature and the methodology of bibliographic review, the aim was to investigate how these feminine images are constructed – and, at the same time, how stereotypes linked to these feminines are deconstructed – in Colasanti and NDiaye, highlighting how the unusual elements (wonderful and fantastic) are a resource for denouncing the atrocious reality experienced by women, and how the recurrence of representations of the archetype of the Great Mother are used to construct feminine images of yesterday and now, in the narratives of the authors present in the following Works: the collection Um Espinho de Marfim e Além Histórias (1999), by Marina Colasanti and Três Mulheres Stronges (2009) and The Devil and Her Daughter (2000), by Marie NDiaye.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Victor Hugo was the author most cited by Machado de Assis in his chronicles and was of great importance in the construction of his cultural heritage, leaving deep marks in his work. The author of Dom Casmurro read the work of Victor Hugo, admired it, memorized it, and, as a young man, tried to follow the ideals of the French poet. This admiration, however, was never blind, as he condemned the excesses of the Hugoist school led by Sílvio Romero, as well as some texts in bad taste published by the creator of Quasimodo. Likewise, he knew how to look at Victor Hugo with a critical eye, removing from his work only those aspects that could benefit his maturity as a writer. In the case of Machado de Assis, the vision of the Other was always permeated with a critical eye; the foreign presence started to be used for the benefit of its own text, thanks to the establishment of a renewing intertextual practice. It is curious to observe that the massive presence of Victor Hugo in Machado’s chronicles contrasts with a shy or almost non-existent presence in his short stories, poems, plays, and novels. This article intends to establish a hypothesis for such a contrast through the analysis of journalistic texts published by Machado de Assis.
From the novel to the goofy: the Victor Hugo´s heroes and the Machado de Assis´s anti-heroes
This article analyses how Victor Hugo embodied his heroes and Machado de Assis his anti-heroes. Three Assis´s short stories and three Hugo´s novels are compared: “O caso da Vara” and the chapter “L‟affaire Champmathieu” from the book Les Misérables; “Noite de Almirante” and Les Travailleurs de la Mer; “Um incêndio” and Quatre-Vingt-Treize. These texts present similar situations, but each author shows an outcome that reveals their literary proposal. For this reason, Comparative Literature and Intertext had been used as base of reflection for this article. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
