    Mechanical characterization of two-dimensional heterostructures by a blister test

    As the family of two−dimensional(2D) materials has grown, two−dimensional heterostructure devices have emerged as great alternatives to replace conventional electronic materials and enable new functionality such as flexible and bendable electronics. The fabrication and performance of these devices depend critically on the understanding and ability to manipulate the mechanical interplay between the stacked materials. In this dissertation, we investigate adhesive interactions and determine the shear modulus of heterostructure devices made from Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2). MoS2 has been attracting attention recently due to its semiconductor nature (having a direct band gap of 1.9 eV) along with its exceptional mechanical strength and flexibility. As the first step of our research, we suspended MoS2 flakes grown through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) over substrates made of metal (gold, titanium, chromium), semiconductor (germanium, silicon), insulator (silicon oxide), and semi-metal (graphite). Then, by creating pressure differences across the membrane, we forced MoS2 to bulge upward until we observe separation from the surface of the substrates. We demonstrated that MoS2 on graphite has the highest work of separation within the tested surface materials. Furthermore, we measured considerable adhesion hysteresis between the work of separation and the work of adhesion. We proposed that surface roughness and chemical interactions play a role in surface adhesion and separation of 2D materials. These experiments are critical to guiding the future design of electrical and mechanical devices based on 2D materials. Next, we measured the effective shear modulus of MoS2/few−layer graphene (FLG) heterostructures by employing a blister test. Again, by introducing a pressure differential across the suspended MoS2 membrane over the FLG substrate, the MoS2/FLG heterostructure peeled off from the silicon oxide surface once the critical pressure is exceeded. Incorporating a modified free energy model and Hencky’s axisymmetric membrane solution, we determine the average effective shear modulus of the heterostructure. This is the first experimental measurement of the shear modulus of heterostructure devices using a blister test and this platform can be extended to determine the shear modulus of other 2D heterostructures as well.2024-05-24T00:00:00

    Adhesion and mechanics of 2D heterostructures

    The thesis examines the adhesive interaction between graphite layers and atomically thin MoS2 crystals. Vertical van der Waals(vdW) heterostructures are fabricated by stacking different two-dimensional (2D) materials on top of each other. Blister test is used to measure the adhesive interactions between 2D heterostructures and their transferred substrates and between the layers themselves. This adhesive interaction is important in maintaining the mechanical integrity of the device during mechanical loadings and its understanding will help pave the way to the design and fabrication of micromechanical device from 2D heterostructures. Furthermore, applying controlled strains can be used to alter the electrical and optical properties thereby improving efficiency and performance. At first, we grew MoS2 and graphene by CVD and stacked the layers on top of each other using a dry transfer method. The MoS2/graphene heterostructure was then transferred onto pre-etched cavities on a silicon wafer. The blister test was used for controllably introducing strain into the heterostructure. Atomic Force Microscopy was used for measuring the shape of the deformed blister and Raman and Photoluminescence(PL) measured the optical response. The strain mismatch between the biaxial strain and a PL-converted strain suggests crumpling of the graphene layer and a substantial softening of the mechanical response. Lastly, we created graphite holes with photolithography to measure the work of separation between an atomically smooth graphite surface and MoS2. We found this value to be at least 320mJ/m2 which is higher than the MoS2/SiOx areas that was previously studied.2023-07-02T00:00:00

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
