Human brucellosis in Turkey: a review of the literature between 1990 and 2009

    No full text
Aim: Brucellosis is a systemic infection, which may involve any organ or system of the body. The aim of this study was a review of the literature related to human brucellosis in Turkey. Materials and methods: In order to find the published reports on this subject, 3 national databases (TUBITAK-ULAKBIM Turkish Medical Literature database, http://www.turkishmedline.com, http://medline.pleksus.com.tr) and 2 international databases [Index Medicus and Science Citation Index (SCI)-expanded] were searched. In addition to the databases, abstracts of congresses held by the Turkish Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Association and the Antibiotic and Chemotherapy Association were searched for reports about brucellosis. Results: The most frequent type of involvement was osteoarticular, followed by hematological abnormalities and nervous system involvement. Conclusion: Brucellosis may present with a broad spectrum of clinical signs and symptoms. Primary health care physicians should be aware of the different clinical presentations of brucellosis

The brexit negotiations: The next battleground for French-U.K. relations

    No full text
In March 2017, following the successful referendum in the UK to leave the European Union in June of 2016, negotiations began to discuss the policies regarding the official exit of the United Kingdom with Theresa May’s declaration of Article 50. In recent developments associated with the Brexit negotiations, more ties have been seen between the UK and France than other member-states of the EU. Given the long history between France and the UK, it is clear that the Brexit negotiations have become the next battleground for UK-French unrest. This essay responds to the strength of the theory of intergovernmentalism within the context of the Brexit negotiations and how the leadership role established by France in the wake of Brexit is a phenomenon based on their economic interests, a desire to advance their position as an international actor, and their deep-rooted, historical discontent for one another. Through analyzing a series of most-read newspapers from both countries, the research has shown the battleground of French-UK relations as taking place in these three categories with national interests being more pertinent in the Brexit negotiations than international relations.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2020-05-01The student, Emilee McArdle, accepted the attached license on 2018-04-19 at 11:28.The student, Emilee McArdle, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2018-04-19 at 13:20.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2018-04-19 at 15:24.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #12377 on 2018-08-31 at 17:21:02Made available in DSpace on 2018-09-04T20:36:48Z (GMT). Evaluation of the effects of regulatory T cells on survival outcomes in patients with acute leukemia who developed febrile neutropenia

    No full text
Objectives Acute leukemia often leads to severe complications such as febrile neutropenia. Mortality rates remain high, underscoring the need for novel prognostic markers. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) have not been extensively studied in this context. Methods This prospective observational, single-center study included 114 patients diagnosed with acute leukemia. Tregs percentages were measured using flow cytometry. Statistical analyses involved logistic regression to identify factors significantly associated with survival. Results Of the 114 patients, 78 recovered, while 36 died. The median Treg percentages were 5.9% in patients under 65 years and 5.38% in those 65 and older. A lower percentage of Tregs was associated with higher mortality in the older group (p = 0.04). Multivariate analysis highlighted the presence of comorbidities, documented infections, and day seven C-reactive protein levels as significant predictors of survival. Conclusion This study supports the importance of monitoring chronic diseases and infection foci alongside traditional markers like C-reactive protein. Future research should explore the mechanistic roles of Tregs in immunosuppression and survival in this vulnerable population

Toward a Deleuzean theory of translation: a translation of and commentary on A fuego eterno condenados

    No full text
This translation and commentary thesis presents a theory of literary translation based on the ideas of Gilles Deleuze, informed by and applied to a translation of parts 0, 1 and 2 of the novel A fuego eterno condenados (1994) by Chilean author Roberto Rivera Vicencio. Using an approach based on the iterative development of a theoretical framework and translation, it examines how specific translation problems from the text can contribute to and benefit from a translation theory based on the ideas of Deleuze. Analysing the work of Lawrence Venuti as indicative of a shift by Translation Studies from thinking of translation in terms of equivalence to thinking of it in terms of difference, the thesis builds on Venuti’s research, offering a systematic treatment of Deleuze’s earlier work to theorise translation as the production of simulacra in which the translator creates solutions in the domain of the Actual to a translation problem that exists in the Virtual. It then goes on to examine Deleuze’s later work, written in collaboration with F´elix Guattari, to develop a conceptual framework based on the concept of the texture of prose derived from the principles of a minor, or nomad, science. This framework is used to address specific problems arising in the translation, deriving a series of practical techniques and considerations that can be used to create this kind of texture in the application of a Deleuzean theory of translation to literary texts

WOS: 000419402200004In this paper, a general theorem concerning vertical bar(N) over bar, p(n), theta(n)vertical bar(k) summability factors of Fourier series is obtained. Using this result we study a localization problem for Fourier series.Ahi Evran University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit [FEF.A4.17.004]This work was supported by Ahi Evran University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit. WOS: 000486985000006In this paper, theorems concerning vertical bar(N) over bar, p(n), theta(n)vertical bar(k) factors of Fourier series and its conjugate series are studied. The presented results are generalizations two theorems of Mazhar on conjugate series and Fourier series.Ahi Evran University Scientific Research Projects Coordination UnitAhi Evran University [FEF.A4.17.004]The author would like to express her sincerest thanks to the referee for valuable suggestions for the improvement of this paper.
