Does seasonality persists in Indian stock markets?
The 'conventional wisdom' about efficient markets is that there are little excess returns, relative to the market returns (and the level of risk) that one can make by analysing historical data. But researchers have gathered systematic evidence about markets violating this conventional wisdom. Some of these are calender effects, small-firm or size effect etc. This paper examines a calender effect known as `the-month-of-the-year-effect' and examine whether this much-hyped anomaly is a persisting feature in the Indian market. The paper shows that the previous evidence on seasonality could be the result of the very nature of parametric methods, that it gets influenced by extreme observations. Otherwise, seasonality is not a feature of the current Indian stock markets.financial market anomaly; stock market seasonality; month of the year effect; Indian stock market; January Effect

X-Ray Investigation of the Calender Effect in Rubber Sheets
Abstract
Rubber sheets were calendered with a slight and with a strong calender effect. The x-ray diagrams did not show any crystalline structure 2 days after calendering. Gradually x-ray reflections developed, the sheet with calender effect showing the reflections much quicker and stronger than the one with a slight calender effect.</jats:p
Impinging jet heat transfer and thermal deformation for calender rolls
The heat transfer characteristics of turbulent impinging jets, typical of those used in paper machine cross machine direction caliper profile control were measured. The effect of jet entrainement on the impingement heat transfer by unconfined jets was successfully scaled using a jet thermal entrainement factor. The addition of a confinement plate to an existing unconfined impinging jet control system was shown to improve the average heat transfer by 33% and 80% for a nozzle-to-impingement surface spacing of 2 and 1 respectively. The thermal deformation of calender roll under control actuators was predicted numerically using finite volume and finite element techniques. The most desirable steady state control characteristics, i.e. high peak deformation and small width of deformation, were obtained on unheated rolls of minimum practical thickness. The results indicate that control actuator spacings less than 0.2m provide negligible control advantage.Experiments were performed on a double calender stack of a production newsprint machine to determine the optimal position for cross-machine direction calender control actuators which would minimize the response time and maximize the magnitude of the response. Control on the queen roll and the two rolls immediately above it produces the strongest response. The king roll and the top roll, each of which affects only one nip, are shown to be poor choices for the placement of control actuators. When two calenders are used in succession, the actuators should be placed in the first stack. Calender roll design must be considered when choosing the location for control actuators
A Theory of the Calender Effect in Rubberlike Materials
Abstract
The facts relating to the calender effected are briefly stated and illustrated by experimental data obtained with calendered plasticized polyvinyl chloride sheet. The nature of rubberlike deformation is outlined. A theory of the calender effect is proposed in terms of a mechanical model whose relation to molecular structure is indicated. The theory postulates that temperature-dependent yield values be associated with the mechanisms of high elastic deformation and plastic flow.</jats:p
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
