    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     L’esordio giuridico del principio di precauzione si fa, generalmente, risalire alla legislazione tedesca degli anni trenta in materia di tutela ambientale. La normativa si inspirava, fra gli altri, al Vorsorgeprinzip.\ud Il tedesco, come noto, è un linguaggio agglutinante, che, nella possibilità di coniare nuovi vocaboli per mezzo dell’unione di più morfemi, nasconde un’insospettabile capacità di adeguarsi alla modernità e di reggere il confronto con l’evolversi degli usi e dei costumi sociali. \ud Nella struttura composta del termine Vorsorgeprinzip convivono, dunque, ragione storica e funzione dell’approccio cautelativo che esso propone. Il prefisso Vor- richiama, in senso temporale, l’opportunità di un’azione preventiva di gestione del rischio; il sostantivo Sorge evoca, invece, l’apprensione e l’angoscia generate dalla possibilità che il pericolo si concretizzi in un evento lesivo.\ud Il principio di precauzione rappresenta, allora, l’estremo tentativo, da parte della società post-moderna, iper-tecnologica e specializzata, giunta a maturità sulla propria condizione, di evitare la verificazione di eventi di danno gravi ed irreversibili, adeguando la strategia di tutela della salute umana, animale ed ambientale al continuo e preoccupante proliferare di una nuova tipologia di rischi, i quali, nell’ambito di un sistema ciclico, si manifestano e riproducono parallelamente all’avanzare del progresso tecnico.\ud I c.d. “rischi della seconda modernità” si distinguono nettamente da quelli propri della prima industrializzazione: essi “non pungono gli occhi” e “non arrossano la pelle”, ma si sviluppano attraverso meccanismi causali “silenti” ed eziologicamente indecifrabili, che sfociano, spesso, dopo lunghi periodi di latenza, in eventi di danno megalici o patologie incurabili. Di fronte a simili eventi, la scienza si mostra incapace di mediarne argomentativamente origine, natura e frequenza di verificazione, elaborando leggi di copertura che spieghino modalità di innesco e di perfezionamento causale. Il mondo accademico, del resto, è interessato da un diffuso processo di professionalizzazione, che pone gli studiosi al servizio di multinazionali e grandi imprese e condiziona gli obbiettivi dell’attività di sperimentazione al punto che si finisce per indagare, soltanto, sui benefici connessi ad un’innovazione tecnologica, tralasciando, completamente, di valutarne i possibili effetti collaterali.\ud La mutata natura dell’agire umano e delle conseguenze indesiderate che ne derivano impone, anche sotto il profilo etico, un rinnovamento dei tradizionali imperativi morali. \ud L’etica della sincronicità, pensata per fungere da guida ad azioni umane dal limitato orizzonte spaziale e temporale, palesa la propria inadeguatezza di fronte ad un potenziale tecnico quasi escatologico, i cui effetti si propagano oltre i confini statali e perdurano per decenni, fino ad interessare la conservazione di un ambiente favorevole alla vita umana e lo sviluppo delle generazioni future.\ud Nel solco del principio responsabilità, ideato dal filosofo tedesco Hans Jonas alla fine degli anni settanta, si rintracciano le radici sociologiche e filosofiche del principio di precauzione, il quale propone una strategia di gestione del rischio che anticipi i tempi della ricerca scientifica, legittimando l’adozione di misure cautelative anche in assenza di evidenze scientifiche, che provino, in via definitiva e completa, la nocività della sospetta minaccia. \ud La logica anticipatoria che caratterizza l’approccio precauzionale sottende, però, la possibilità di errori predittivi, che, tuttavia, si giustificano alla luce dell’alto grado d’indesiderabilità degli effetti negativi legati ai rischi della seconda modernità.\ud In ambito giuridico, il principio di precauzione comincia ad affermarsi, a partire dalla metà degli anni settanta, nel diritto internazionale ambientale e commerciale. Successivamente, trova ampio riconoscimento nell’ordinamento comunitario e, poi, specie in esecuzione di atti di diritto comunitario c.d. derivato, nell’apparato normativo interno.\ud Parallelamente all’emersione di versioni “forti”, che, ispirandosi ad una strategia maxmin propongono l’inazione come unica opzione regolativa possibile, si assiste alla diffusione di logiche “meno intransigenti”, che muovono dall’esigenza di conciliare la tutela della salute umana, animale e dell’ambiente con la salvaguardia degli interessi economici, che verrebbero sacrificati da attività di regolamentazione a contenuto eccessivamente invasivo.\ud Un contributo decisivo nella conformazione di una versione “moderata” ed “attuale” del principio di precauzione è offerto dalla giurisprudenza delle Corti Europee, le quali, gradualmente, attraverso l’introduzione di più rigidi presupposti di rischio e rigorosi parametri interpretativi, hanno elaborato un approccio precauzionale strutturato per fasi successive. Per questa via, si garantisce, da un lato, la fondatezza epistemologica della congettura di rischio, che deve riguardare ipotesi di danno dotate di sufficiente credibilità scientifica e relative ad effetti gravi ed irreversibili; dall’altro lato, che la scelta delle misure cautelative sia proporzionale all’importanza degli interessi in gioco e calibrata in funzione della natura e dell’entità del potenziale pericolo. A tal proposito, si invoca, con frequenza sempre maggiore, il correttivo dell’analisi costi/benefici, che, in aderenza ad una science based policy, tipica degli ordinamenti giuridici di common law, assicura la partecipazione di tutti i soggetti interessati alla procedura di gestione del rischio ed un equo contemperamento fra i contrapposti interessi, anche di natura economica, coinvolti dall’attività di regolamentazione.\u

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
