The Case and the Canon. Anomalies, discontinuities, metaphors between science and literature
No full textMaterial or immaterial artefacts are a way of channelling the human creative
thrust and of communicating with long lasting messages. This is a dynamic
process where a set of rules forming a theoretical body, the canon, is pro-
gressively established in every sphere of human activity. The canon fixes the
guidelines, which must be respected in order to produce a new artefact or
theoretical work. From time to time a non conventional artwork or discovery
requires a revision of the existing canon, since it cannot fit within it, and
eventually a new canon is established. As a paradigmatic example we might
consider the theory of perspective in painting introduced by Piero della Fran-
cesca, which changed the canon of the figurative arts. Physics, life sciences,
literature and other disciplines offer several examples of discoveries which could
not be adjusted to within the existing canon and consequently required a deep
revision of their theoretical framework and the formulation of a new canon. This
volume collects essays, on science and literature, which illustrate some para-
digmatic cases, whose impact was so strong as to impose a transition to new
canons. The evolution of science and arts appears to be a smooth process with
jumps, which correspond to critical events and has some similarities with the
evolution of species. The evolution of physics for instance can be depicted as a
series of concentric circles corresponding to theories whose range of applic-
ability has progressively extended, without contradicting the previous ones
within their realm of validity

No full textDalla seconda metà degli anni Settanta, Manchester ha rappresentato uno straordinario
contesto per la diffusione di tendenze sonore che hanno influenzato e continuano
a influenzare la scena musicale internazionale. Tra le numerose band che
hanno animato questo scenario spiccano indiscutibilmente i Joy Division e Ian
Curtis. Nel presente contributo viene analizzata, alla stregua di uno studio di
caso, la vicenda artistica e umana di questa band e del loro leader, con l’intento di
porre in evidenza quali siano i fattori che hanno consentito a Manchester di divenire
il fulcro di questo particolarissimo e originale, se non unico, fenomeno creativo.From the second half of the Seventies Manchester represented an excellent environment
for the spread of sound trends that have influenced and continue to influence
the international music scene. Among the many bands that have animated
this background there are unquestionably Joy Division and Ian Curtis. In this
paper the author analyzed, as a case study, the artistic and human event of this
band and their leaders with the intent to highlight what are the factors that have
allowed Manchester to become the focus of this particular original, if not unique,
creative phenomenon

AMERICAN NIGHT SHADOWS: NOTE SU EDWARD HOPPER E IL CINEMA NOIR AMERICANO
No full textLa maggior parte degli storici del cinema concorda nel descrivere i film noir come una sintesi di tre elementi eterogenei: la prima letteratura hard-boiled (soprattutto quella dei grandi autori, Hammett e Chandler), il cinema espressionista tedesco e la psicoanalisi. A questi tre elementi di solito si aggiunge una particolare sensibilità visiva, caratterizzata da una fotografia scura, immagini di strade bagnate e desolate e particolari giochi di luci e ombre. Questi aspetti fotografici spesso vengono ricondotti proprio all’espressionismo tedesco. Tuttavia, ci sono alcuni pittori americani che almeno vent’anni prima del The Maltese Falcon (John Huston, 1941) – considerato il primo noir della storia – hanno anticipato sensibilità e schemi compositivi della fortuna stagione cinematografica. Edward Hopper, oltre ad essere il più importante pittore figurativo americano, è forse l’artista che ha dato il contributo maggiore allo sviluppo dei noir, anche grazie alla sua vicenda biografica (inizia la sua carriera come illustratore di locandine cinematografiche).
Esistono alcuni articoli e saggi che segnalano – non sempre in modo approfondito e analitico – lo stretto rapporto tra alcune incisioni e tele di Hopper e la costruzione delle scene dei film noir. Ma questi articoli e saggi di solito si concentrano sul rapporto specifico tra il pittore e Alfred Hitchcock (entrambi avevano esplicitato stima reciproca) o sulla relazione tra due tele di Hopper e Force of Evil, il bel film di Abraham Polosnky. Lo scopo del mio saggio è dunque quello di esaminare le molteplici affinità formali e tematiche tra alcune opere di Hopper e i film noir americani, mettendo in luce gli intrecci tra il cinema e l’artista che hanno preceduto ”l’età del noir”
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textIl fonosimbolismo, fenomeno relativo all’iconicità dei segni fonetici, ha alimentato nel corso degli anni una vasta letteratura, spaziando da divagazioni impressionistiche sul colore dei suoni a veri e propri esperimenti di laboratorio, da orientamenti di tipo teorico e storicistico a stravaganti strategie comunicative e di marketing. Il presente contributo intende procedere a una disamina di alcune delle strutture fonetiche più rappresentative della lingua inglese ricorrendo a esempi tratti dal linguaggio utilizzato dalla stampa. Tale studio avalla la teoria secondo cui i fonemi sono in grado di determinare in maniera immediata sul piano semantico i termini che li contengono, mostrando il rapporto imprescindibile tra suoni e concetti, e confermando, pertanto, la loro intrinseca forza e persuasività espressiva
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. che li contengono, mostrando il rapporto imprescindibile tra suoni e concetti, e confermando,

Through the years, it has given rise to a large amount of studies which range from
impressionistic ramblings on the ‘colour’ of sounds and real laboratory tests to theoretical
and historicist approaches and bizarre marketing and communication
strategies.
The present contribution focuses on the analysis of some of the most important
phonetic structures of English with examples from the language used in the press.
The study confirms the theory that sounds/phonemes can semantically determine
the terms in which they are combined, thus revealing a binding relation between
sound and concept, and confirming their inherent expressive power and persuasiveness
