Carota A, Marangolo P, Markowitsch HJ, Calabrese P. When solving 22-7 is much more difficult than 99-12. Neurocase. 2013;19(1):54-66.We describe the case of a 69-year-old professor of mathematics (GV) who was examined 2 years after left-hemispheric capsular-thalamic haemorrhage. GV showed disproportionate impairment in subtractions requiring borrowing (22??7). For large subtraction problems without borrowing (99??12) performance was almost flawless. Subtractions with borrowing mostly relied on inadequate attempts to invert subtractions into the corresponding additions (22??7?=?x as 7?+?x?=?22). The hypothesis is advanced that difficulty in the inhibitory components of attention tasks (Stroop test, go-no-go task) might be the responsible factor of his calculation impairment. A deficit in subtractions with borrowing might be related to left-hemispheric damage involving thalamo-cortical connections

Subsystem distance after a local operator quench

We investigate the time evolution of the subsystem trace distance and Schatten distances after local operator quenches in two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) and in one-dimensional quantum spin chains. We focus on the case of a subsystem being an interval embedded in the infinite line. The initial state is prepared by inserting a local operator in the ground state of the theory. We only consider the cases in which the inserted local operator is a primary field or a sum of several primaries. While a nonchiral primary operator can excite both left-moving and right-moving quasiparticles, a holomorphic primary operator only excites a right-moving quasiparticle and an anti-holomorphic primary operator only excites a left-moving one. The reduced density matrix (RDM) of an interval hosting a quasiparticle is orthogonal to the RDM of the interval without any quasiparticles. Moreover, the RDMs of two intervals hosting quasiparticles at different positions are also orthogonal to each other. We calculate numerically the entanglement entropy, Rényi entropy, trace distance, and Schatten distances in time-dependent states excited by different local operators in the critical Ising and XX spin chains. These results match the CFT predictions in the proper limit

Quantum information scrambling after a quantum quench

How quantum information is scrambled in the global degrees of freedom of nonequilibrium many-body systems is a key question to understand local thermalization. A consequence of scrambling is that in the scaling limit the mutual information between two intervals vanishes at all times, i.e., it does not exhibit a peak at intermediate times. Here we investigate the mutual information scrambling after a quantum quench in both integrable and nonintegrable one-dimensional systems. We study the mutual information between two intervals of finite length as a function of their distance. In integrable systems, the mutual information exhibits an algebraic decay with the distance between the intervals, signaling weak scrambling. This behavior may be qualitatively understood within the quasiparticle picture for the entanglement spreading. In the scaling limit of large intervals, times, and distances between the intervals, with their ratios fixed, this predicts a decay exponent equal to 1/2. Away from the scaling limit, the power-law behavior persists, but with a larger (and model-dependent) exponent. For nonintegrable models, a much faster decay is observed, which can be attributed to the finite lifetime of the quasiparticles: unsurprisingly, nonintegrable models are better scramblers

Boundary effects on symmetry resolved entanglement

We study the symmetry resolved entanglement entropies in one-dimensional systems with boundaries. We provide some general results for conformal invariant theories and then move to a semi-infinite chain of free fermions. We consider both an interval starting from the boundary and away from it. We derive exact formulas for the charged and symmetry resolved entropies based on theorems and conjectures about the spectra of Toeplitz+Hankel matrices. En route to characterise the interval away from the boundary, we prove a general relation between the eigenvalues of Toeplitz+Hankel matrices and block Toeplitz ones. An important aspect is that the saddle-point approximation from charged to symmetry resolved entropies introduces algebraic corrections to the scaling that are much more severe than in systems without boundaries

Quantum information dynamics in multipartite integrable systems

In a non-equilibrium many-body system, the quantum information dynamics between non-complementary regions is a crucial feature to understand the local relaxation towards statistical ensembles. Unfortunately, its characterization is a formidable task, as non-complementary parts are generally in a mixed state. We show that for integrable systems, this quantum information dynamics can be quantitatively understood within the quasiparticle picture for the entanglement spreading. Precisely, we provide an exact prediction for the time evolution of the logarithmic negativity after a quench. In the space-time scaling limit of long times and large subsystems, the negativity becomes proportional to the Rényi mutual information with Rényi index . We provide robust numerical evidence for the validity of our results for free-fermion and free-boson models, but our framework applies to any interacting integrable system

Symmetry resolved entanglement in integrable field theories via form factor bootstrap

We consider the form factor bootstrap approach of integrable field theories to derive matrix elements of composite branch-point twist fields associated with symmetry resolved entanglement entropies. The bootstrap equations are determined in an intuitive way and their solution is presented for the massive Ising field theory and for the genuinely interacting sinh-Gordon model, both possessing a Z2 symmetry. The solutions are carefully cross-checked by performing various limits and by the application of the ∆-theorem. The issue of symmetry resolution for discrete symmetries is also discussed. We show that entanglement equipartition is generically expected and we identify the first subleading term (in the UV cutoff) breaking it. We also present the complete computation of the symmetry resolved von Neumann entropy for an interval in the ground state of the paramagnetic phase of the Ising model. In particular, we compute the universal functions entering in the charged and symmetry resolved entanglement

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Schizophrene Psychosen

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
