Dynamic analysis of the vehicle-structure interaction: a direct and efficient computer implementation
The simulation of the dynamic behavior of a structure subjected to sets of moving
loads originated by vehicles whose structural behavior is also considered corresponds to a
task not efficiently addressed by standard finite element packages. The capability of solving
this type of problems has been introduced in the FEMIX 4.0 computational code by means of
an integrated formulation, which includes equilibrium and compatibility equations, with
unknowns that consist on displacements and interaction forces. Each system of linear
equations is efficiently solved by considering the characteristics of each submatrix of the
coefficient matrix
Introduction
Social and economic growth, security, and sustainability in Europe are at risk of being compromised due to aging and failing railway infrastructure systems. This partly reflects a recognized skill shortage in railway infrastructure engineering. To tackle these challenges, the Rail Infrastructure Systems Engineering Network (RISEN) was accordingly established and funded by the European Commission. RISEN aims to enhance knowledge creation and transfer using both international and intersectoral secondment mechanisms among European Advanced Rail Research Universities/SMEs and non-EU, world-class rail universities. The outcome of the collaborative research network are thus complied and presented in this book.This book addresses some of the most essential issues currently affecting the safety, reliability, and functionality of European rail infrastructure systems. Rebuilding and enhancing urban rail infrastructure faces problems beyond the search for engineering solutions. At present, the majority of rail infrastructure systems are aging and failing. Some have even reached their initial design lives and are due for replacement or renewal, either partially or totally. In addition, these issues resonate with one of the major grand challenges of engineering to restore and improve urban infrastructure and build environments; to do this, it will not only be necessary to devise new approaches and methods but also to communicate their value and worthiness to society at large. Complexity and interconnectedness of these barriers have a strong momentum, which now triggers a fundamental need for academia, industry, communities, and governments to work collaboratively to tackle aggregated problems and make a positive difference globally. To resolve the challenges, this book thus compiles state-of-the-art knowledge that underpins various policies to overcome environmental and physical barriers toward a more sustainable and resilience railway.<br/

Responses of mast structure and overhead line equipment (OHLE) subjected to extreme events
At present, in modern railway systems, train or rolling stocks are powered by electricity through the overhead wire or the third rail on the ground. Overhead line equipment (OHLE) is the component for the electric train which supplies electric power to the train. OHLE is, for one or two tracks, normally supported by cantilever masts, while a portal frame structure supports OHLE for more than two tracks because of the requirement for more space. OHLE and its support, particularly cantilever mast, are the vulnerable components in a railway system because of their high slenderness and vibration sensitivity. This chapter presents the responses of the cantilever mast, OHLE, and its support under extreme events using finite element analysis (FEA). It is clear that OHLE failure could be observed because of the failure of the mast structure, particularly when the structure–support condition is poor (e.g., broken bolt, yielding weld, improper design and construction, and soft ground). The insight will increase the awareness of engineers for a better design of OHLE, mast structure, and its support condition to encounter natural disasters and future uncertainties. Moreover, the outcome will help civil and track engineers to effectively and efficiently inspect OHLE structures and their supports by using the structural responses.<br/
Railway ballast
Railway ballast is normally made of crushed rocks with grading (particle size distributions). Ballast is inevitably suffering from more rapid degradation. Because ballast keeps undergoing and dissipating most of the train loadings, furthermore, the train speed and freight weight are increasing, causing more intensive loadings to ballast. To prolong ballast service time and reduce ballast maintenance cost, more studies need to be performed on the ballast degradation reduction, ballast inspection, and ballast assessment. Wheel-rail dynamic interaction
A better understanding of wheel-rail dynamic interaction is necessary for the capacity increase of railway transportation. This chapter briefly introduces the consequences, modeling and detection methods of wheel-rail dynamic interaction, and maintenance of the weak track spots where wheel-rail dynamic interaction often occurs. Wheel-rail dynamic interaction causes high-amplitude vibration and noise and accelerate structural degradation. Owing to the capabilities of handling nonlinear material properties and arbitrary contact geometries and considering dynamic effects, the explicit finite element approach is proposed to model wheel-rail dynamic interaction. Three numerical examples are presented to simulate wheel-rail impacts, frictional instability, and flange contact, respectively; and Rayleigh waves are observed in the simulation results. Wheel-rail dynamic interaction-related problems can be detected with the measurements of wheel-rail contact force, axle box acceleration, and track vibration. Roteiro para a classificação dos padrões do plano
O relatório de estágio (RE) aqui apresentado é elaborado no âmbito da unidade curricular Estágio Pedagógico (EP) do 2º ano do plano de estudos do 2º Ciclo em Ensino da Matemática no 3º Ciclo do Ensino Básico e no Ensino Secundário, pela Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI).
A Prática de Ensino Supervisionada (PES), parte integrante do EP, decorreu ao longo do ano letivo de 2012/2013, na Escola Secundária Nuno Álvares (ESNA) em Castelo Branco.
O núcleo de estágio integrou duas estagiárias, Paula Marques e Rita Isidoro, e a PES esteve sob a orientação de um docente do departamento de Matemática (orientador científico) Professor Doutor Rui Pacheco e do docente da ESNA (orientador cooperante) Professor José Monteiro.
A elaboração deste RE esteve sob a orientação do Professor Doutor Rui Pacheco e divide-se em dois capítulos. No primeiro capítulo descreve-se de forma sumária o trabalho realizado no âmbito da PES e no segundo capítulo apresenta-se um roteiro para a classificação dos padrões do plano.
A par deste trabalho escrito foi elaborado um portfólio de estágio onde estão arquivados todos os documentos produzidos ao longo do ano de estágio.This document is a report of the Pedagogic Practice, which is part of the 2nd year of the Master course on Mathematics teaching at the University of Beira Interior (UBI).
The Pedagogic Practice took place throughout the academic year 2012/2013, in the Secondary School Nuno Álvares, Castelo Branco – Portugal under the supervision of Professor Rui Pacheco (from the Mathematics Department – UBI) and Professor José Monteiro (from Secondary School Nuno Álvares).
