Consequentemente, recomendase a mobilização da abordagem de base genológica na conceção e implementação de um apoio integrado de língua e conteúdo aos alunos de PLNM.This research focusses on the discourse of the subject Ciências da Natureza – CN (Natural Sciences; 5th and 6th grade), according to two main research questions: Which genres occur in CN textbooks? How can Genre Pedagogy be implemented in the subject Português Língua Não Materna – PLNM (Portuguese as a second language) in order to improve Portuguese L2 student’s understanding of science texts? The research is based on the premise that L2 students require a language and content integrated approach. Although this approach is proposed by the Ministry of Education, implementation in schools has been sparse, due to the a shortage of studies, in Portugal, on the role of language in the building and transmission of knowledge and due to a lack of proposals for the realization of such an integrated approach. It is our aim to contribute to these issues by means of a genre based approach, informed by Systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and, more specifically, the Genre Studies and Genre Pedagogy proposed by the “Sydney School”. Preference is given to this approach for three reasons: its ideological commitment, the wealth of studies in English on the genres of schooling and the proven effectiveness of genre pedagogy in improving students’ literacy outcomes, especially those that tend to be “left out of the chain” (e.g. L2 students). The research comprises three case studies. The first study maps the genres of CN, identifying and describing individual genres in a corpus of science textbooks, and defining typological relations between them. The second study offers a detailed analysis of two 5th grade texts, focusing both on their discursive and lexicogramatical patterns. The third study concerns the implementation of the Reading to Learn Program of the Sydney School. The study aims to identify a set of strategies for reading and discussing science texts in PLNM classes, adapted to the contextual and linguistic patterns of the texts and to the students´ proficiency in Portuguese. The results of the studies show that a genre based approach allows for a detailed description of the language uses in CN textbooks and the challenges they imply for L2 students, on the one hand, and for the proposal of concrete strategies to deconstruct science texts in the PLNM class, on the other. Accordingly, the main contribution of the study lies in the recommendation of the genre based approach for the design and implementation of a content and language integrated support for L2 students in Portuguese schools

The present research endeavors to investigate the lexical-semantic contrast (LSC) between European Portuguese verbs and Chinese verbs (Mandarin) specialized within the culinary domain. The study involves an in-depth analysis, demonstration, and summarization of the points of divergence and convergence observed in the verbs referred. Subsequently, we aim to propose a prototype, derived from a collection of Portuguese verbs, which will serve as the foundational basis for developing a comprehensive explanatory bilingual dictionary in the culinary domain. This dictionary will be unidirectional, translating from Portuguese to Chinese and specifically catering to Chinese speakers (Mandarin). The research encompasses two main phases: a study phase and an application phase. In the study phase, we undertake a meticulous examination of the source of specialized consultation (SSC) — lexicographic resources — as well as another analysis based on the source of specialized usage (SSU) — recipe books. For the first analysis, we adopt a compositional analysis approach and lexical field, with a specific focus on the verbs of both languages. The objective is to correlate the comparative outcomes derived from the compositional approach with the potential perspectives of LSC and thereby demonstrate the level of equivalence between the two languages within the culinary context. Drawing inspiration from the theory of frame semantics, the second analysis centers on Portuguese verbs, aiming to compare the semantic parameters and their Chinese equivalence between the SSC and the SSU. In the application phase, we construct the prototype of the targeted bilingual dictionary, meticulously integrating the knowledge accumulated during the research process. This knowledge significantly influences the decisions made in definition, Chinese equivalence, examples, and the combinatorial structure in the lexicographic microstructure (entry)

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
