Whose past and whose future: Free love and love marriage among the "Kafirs" of Hindukush in an early 19th-century Persian ethnography
No full textThis paper deals with some practices and conceptions relating to love and marriage in a now extinct pre-Islamic culture of the Hindukush, as described in an extremely precious, yet very little-known, Persian ethnographical source (ca.1840). Written by a munshī from Peshawar under instructions from the French general Claude-Auguste Court, who was then in the service of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, this is probably the single most important pre-Robertson source about the “Kafir” cultures of Nuristan. While a complete translation and thorough study of the unpublished document, by Stefano Pellò and Alberto Cacopardo, is now forthcoming, in these brief notes we show how free love and love marriage, often perceived as “modern” concepts in many parts of Asia, were envisioned by Tak and Shamlar, two elders from pre-Islamic Kamdesh
The Digital Turn in Social Work: Navigating Relationships, Boundaries, and Ethics
No full textDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, social workers in Lombardy, Italy, were confronted with an abrupt
shift to digitally mediated practices that reshaped the core of the helping relationship. This qualitative study draws on 29 interviews and two focus groups conducted between 2021 and 2022 to
explore how professionals experienced and responded to this transformation.
The findings reveal both relational and ethical tensions, linked to distance, loss of non-verbal cues,
and blurred boundaries, and a range of adaptive strategies aimed at maintaining empathy and
trust. Concepts such as social presence and digital intimacy provide a lens to interpret these micropractices of negotiation. While rooted in a specific historical context, the reflections emerging from
the study remain highly relevant in the current phase of hybrid practice, as social services continue
to grapple with the long-term integration of digital tools.
The study argues that digitalization in social work is neither inherently empowering nor detrimental,
but context-dependent, and must be critically accompanied by institutional guidance, training,
and ethical reflection

No full textThe article explores the ethical implications and professional challenges posed by the integration of digital technologies in social services, with particular attention to the Lombardy region since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital technologies have accelerated a transformation in social intervention methods, improving services for some individuals and for professionals but raising at the time ethical dilemmas related to privacy protection and adherence to social justice principles. This research uses a qualitative methodology, analyzing the experiences and perceptions of social workers through semi-structured interviews and focus groups.
Three key themes emerge from the study: (1) challenges related to confidentiality in digital communications, often occurring in home environments with limited privacy; (2) digital exclusion, which restricts access to services for the most vulnerable populations, thereby exacerbating existing inequalities; (3) maintaining professionalism online, complicated by the nature of digital tools. The article suggests the need for new ethical guidelines and targeted training to ensure the conscious use of ICT, promoting ethical and inclusive social intervention. The findings indicate that adopting these technologies requires a structured reflection on professional standards and requires the construction of a «digital culture», which is essential to guarantee the quality and equity of social services in an increasingly digitalized era

Engineering and Monitoring 3D Cell Constructs with Time-Evolving Viscoelasticity for the Study of Liver Fibrosis In Vitro
Get PDFLiver fibrosis is generally associated with an over-production and crosslinking of extracellular matrix proteins, causing a progressive increase in both the elastic and viscous properties of the hepatic tissue. We describe a strategy for mimicking and monitoring the mechano-dynamics of the 3D microenvironment associated with liver fibrosis. Cell-laden gelatin hydrogels were crosslinked with microbial transglutaminase using a purpose-designed cytocompatible two-step protocol, which allows for the exposure of cells to a mechanically changing environment during culturing. A bioreactor was re-engineered to monitor the mechanical properties of cell constructs over time. The results showed a shift towards a more elastic (i.e., solid-like) behaviour, which is likely related to an increase in cell stress. The method effectively mimics the time-evolving mechanical microenvironment associated with liver fibrosis and could provide novel insights into pathophysiological processes in which both elastic and viscous properties of tissues change over time

presented in this paper aims to investigate the consequences of the pandemic and the lockdown on the population of self-sufficient older citizens in a circumscribed area of Northern Italy, one of the territories that was affected the most by the pandemic. The research focuses on the conditions of people over 65 years who were carrying out voluntary work in various local organizations.
Secondary analysis was conducted on data from a research carried out in a District of Northern Italy. The results of the study showed numerous
consequences for this population group, suddenly
driven to operate a profound shift in their routine. The main consequence was a transformation in their role: the volunteers were people whose helped other people and suddenly they found themselves labelled as fragile recipients of help. The paper examines how these conditions reinforce a stereotyped image of the elders and poses some possible strategies to counter it, with particular
