The role of idiom length and context in spoken idiom comprehension
No full textTwo cross-modal lexical decision experiments investigated the role of the length of the idiom string (Experiment 1) and of prior sentential context (Experiment 2) in spoken idiom recognition. The idiomatic meaning was activated at the offset of long idioms but not of short idioms when the idiom was preceded by a neutral context. The idiomatic meaning of short idioms was instead activated at the string offset when the idiom was preceded by an idiomatic context. The results support the Configuration Hypothesis (Cacciari & Tabossi, 1988)

Get PDFTese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura, Florianópolis, 2009Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar quatro figuras da crítica italiana contemporânea que antagonizam e protagonizam o debate sobre estética e política: Giorgio Agamben, Paolo Virno, Massimo Cacciari e Franco Rella. A análise passa, principalmente, pelos materiais esparsos produzidos a partir dos anos 1970 até a entrada do novo século, a fim de observar a montagem das categorias que movimentam as articulações desses pensamentos. Categorias que, carregadas de tempo e de ética, permitem chegar à hipótese de que o pensar filosófico e o fazer poético, artístico e crítico operam de maneira polarmente conjugada na inoperância constituída entre as quatro figuras, de modo a perceber que: pela profanação, Agamben monta as imagens que transitam entre as diversas disciplinas do saber e a arte; pela ambivalência, Virno rearticula a conduta da esquerda, a partir de considerações marxinianas; pelo paradoxo do pensamento, Cacciari explicita filosofia estética e filosofia política; pela noção de figura, Rella passeia pelas imagens da modernidade. that Cortex devoted to the neurospcyhology of grammatical gender processing. First, the evidence on grammatical gender retrieval and production provided by these studies concern both unimpaired and language-impaired speakers (namely, aphasics and Alzheimer patients). Second, the authors investigated gender processing in a fairly wide range of languages, namely Semitic languages (i.e., Hebrew), Romance languages (i.e., Spanish and Italian), Slavic languages (i.e., Polish) and Germanic languages (i.e., Dutch and German).Third, different methodologies are employed to tap either comprehension or production processes: on-line tasks such as visual lexical decision making and self-paces reading, off-line tasks such as grammaticality judgement, and picture naming. Lastly, although the focus of this special section of Cortex is on grammatical gender, some of these studies deal with the relationships and processing differences between gender and another relevant syntactic feature,number

No full textIn Wis 7:17-21, Solomon speaks about Wisdom and enumerates the manifold powers of the "knowledge" she has given him; so doing, he seems to wear the dresses of an educated hellenistic dynast, rather than showing the archaic habitus of a king who lived in the 10th century b.C. We meet this passage from an 'apocryphal' book not seldom in the writings of Origen, who – especially in his Commentary on Canticle – develops his idea of a 'cyclic' education, which he conceives as a necessary propaedeutic to a thorough study of Scripture. His interest in sciences – particularly mathematics, geometry, astronomy – is confirmed by important witnesses such as Eusebius and Gregory the Thaumatourgos and represents a ring of the long chain connecting Origen with the milieu of Alexandrian culture
