    No full text
Confidentiality This report contains detailed information about the design and implementation of Charon. The DataDiode, and by extension Charon, is used in many high security environments. They handle highly confidential data, and are used by clients ranging from major companies to governmental organizations. Because of this, the details about Charon disclosed in this report can not be made publicly available online. A physical copy of the full version of the report is kept by the Computer Science Bachelor Project Coordinator of the TU Delft. To access the full report, please contact the current coordinator. The Dutch IT security company Fox-IT created the DataDiode, a product that connects two networks with different security levels providing a one-way data path. A new appliance of the DataDiode is currently under development. As part of our BSc project, we were given de assignment to develop Charon, a pluggable filtering framework for the new DataDiode appliance. This thesis describes the complete process of the project and elaborates the choices we have made. In the introduction we explain what a Computer Science Bsc project is at Delft University of Technology and describe Fox-IT and the DataDiode. After this we give a detailed description of the assignment, define the requirements, explain the design methodology and why we consider Charon to be a suitable name for the project. In the next chapter we elaborate on the design choices we have made and illustrate these choices with UML-diagrams. The chapter that follows is about the implementation of the system; we describe the libraries, tools and system components. After this chapter we evaluate the implementation by comparing the implemented functionality with the requirements. We also explain in which way we tested our system to make sure it runs according to the specifications, about the Fox-IT challenge and the code evaluation. We reflect the process in the succeeding chapter where we compare the initial planning with the actual execution, and explain the collaboration between the group members. In the last chapter, we conclude the thesis and list several recommendations for Fox-IT. The appendices that are attached to this thesis contain a complete class diagram, several documents that are created during the orientation phase and a user manual.Computer ScienceElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

OdontólogoPregradoA study focused on the existing problem was developed with randomized interviews of patients attending the external consultation service where there is not a good communication between dentist and patient. To develop a description of the proposal of narrative medicine according to Rita Charon based on eight articles by said author. To ponder as to how narrative medicine proposed by Rita Charon may improve the dentist-patient relation. An in-depth reading and analysis of articles by the mentioned author aimed at figuring out what is narrative medicine, which are its objectives and how it is applied during consultation in order to improve the quality of service in dentistry. A general search of 23 articles by Rita Charon regarding narrative medicine was carried out mainly in PubMed, Google Scholar and Scielo. The author used the term narrative medicine to refer to a medicine practiced with narrative abilities to recognize, absorb, interpret and get emotional with stories of disease. Narrative medicine is the clinical practice strengthened by the ability of knowing what to do with the stories relayed by patients. Physicians, nurses or social workers do not acquire this ability so they do not learn to be readers, interpreters or to absorb such signals. This is what Dr Charon aims to achieve, who leads the MA in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University. She states that such abilities are not acquired during school but there is a way to train them and learn how to use them. The program uses reading of literature, painting and writing among the skills to develop communication abilities

Impact craters on Pluto and Charon indicate a deficit of small Kuiper belt objects

Singer, K.N., et al., "Impact craters on Pluto and Charon indicate a deficit of small Kuiper belt objects." Science 363, 6430 (March 2019): p. 955-9 doi 10.1126/SCIENCE.AAP8628 ©2019 Author(s)The flyby of Pluto and Charon by the New Horizons spacecraft provided high-resolution images of cratered surfaces embedded in the Kuiper belt, an extensive region of bodies orbiting beyond Neptune. Impact craters on Pluto and Charon were formed by collisions with other Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) with diameters from ~40 kilometers to ~300 meters, smaller than most KBOs observed directly by telescopes. We find a relative paucity of small craters ≲13 kilometers in diameter, which cannot be explained solely by geological resurfacing. This implies a deficit of small KBOs (≲1 to 2 kilometers in diameter). Some surfaces on Pluto and Charon are likely ≳4 billion years old, thus their crater records provide information on the size-frequency distribution of KBOs in the early Solar System. ©201

Christ and Charon: PGM P13 Reconsidered

    No full text
PGM P13 consists of a long invocation to Jesus and a request for protection against all possible evils, and can be dated to the early fifth century. Although its reference to Charon and description of the descent of Jesus to the underworld makes it one of the most exciting pieces in Preisendanz's collection of Christian magical texts, it has not been treated in detail since its publication in 1900 by Adolf Jacoby. This article presents some corrections to the previous editions on the basis of a black-and-white image of the papyrus available online. The text is followed by a detailed line-by-line commentary, which aims at situating the text in the context of the literature read and produced in the period in Egypt, as well as of the Christian ritual texts. The article finishes with a discussion of the salient features of this remarkable text, as the creedal formulas, the reference to the descent, and the mention of Charon, which allows us to catch a glimpse of the author, a Christian intellectual in search of ritual efficacy. Charon in Epitaphs of John Geometres (Kyriotes)

    No full text
Introduction. The poetic system of the images of John Geometres has a traditional antique origin, but surprisingly the characters of Geometres’ Hades and Charon acquire not an antiquarian, literary but a folkloric character. Methods. The epigrams of the Geometres (Kyriotes) are considered from the point of view of the critical approaches of hermeneutics, as they are formulated by H.-G. Gadamer. In addition, the relationship between Byzantine literature and Byzantine folklore is presented by the author in the categories of psychoanalysis. Analysis. Based on two epitaphs of the Byzantine poet of the 10th century John Geometres (Kyriotes), it is possible to trace the Byzantine deformation of the ancient literary images of the afterlife. This deformation occurs under pressure, by various ways of poetic tradition, of Byzantine folklore. The resultant poetic images have an original, surrogate character. Conclusions. Byzantine rhetoricians, John Geometres (Kyriotes) among them, faced with folk ideas about Charos, comprehended them in classical categories. As a result, it was a compromise variant, combining the chthonic power of Charos and the literary tradition of Charon. This deformation takes place under pressure, which in various ways penetrates into the poetic tradition of Byzantine folklore. The resulting poetic images have an original, surrogate character. Byzantine poetry, based on the free play of metaphors and language associations, in contact with the live folk speech, have made it possible to penetrate the folklore ideas of Charos in the “closed” rhetorical genre of Byzantine literature

Abstract: This article assesses the Irish state’s ability to enforce an independent economic policy in spite of European integration and the globalisation process. Its author first analyses the origins and limits of the Irish economic growth ; she then examines the economic perspectives of Ireland in an uncertain national and international context. She finally assesses the policies chosen by the state to stimulate growth

From the martian surface to its low orbit in a reusable single-stage vehicle—charon

    No full text
With Mars colonisation becoming a reality for the near future, it is of importance to analyse how crew and cargo can be transported between Earth and a colony on Mars. This article is a feasibility and design study of a launch vehicle whose mission is to shuttle crew and cargo from Low Mars Orbit to a colony on the Martian surface. A single-stage reusable rocket has been selected to fulfil this mission, code-named Charon. The mission profile of such a vehicle was created, leading to a Maximum Growth Allowance (MGA) Delta-V budget of 6.2 km/s. With the mission profile in mind, each subsystem underwent a preliminary design. With reliability and maintainability in mind, subsystems were designed for redundancy and modularity, and an abort system was included for an added level of safety. The iterative design process resulted in a vehicle with a MGA mass of 198.7 tons, capable of transporting 1200 kg of cargo and a crew of 6 people to a 500 km orbit and back. The preliminary design of the vehicle is deemed safe. Following a fault tree analysis, the Single Launch Loss of Mission, Vehicle and Crew (SL-LOM, SL-LOV, SL-LOC) probabilities are computed to be of 0.975%, 0.12%, and 0.079%. Finally, from the vehicle’s constraints on the base, the feasibility of the project has been reflected upon. It is deemed that such a concept is of high interest only when the base is already operational, due to the launch and maintenance infrastructure that it requires, as well as the power it requires from the Martian base.Astrodynamics & Space Mission

De la satire lucianesque à la diatribe philosophique : le Charon de Giovanni Pontano (1467)

Article issu du texte de la journée d'études « Dialogue et diatribe », Université Paris Diderot, 12 juin 2015International audienceWhatever might be said about the existence of diatribe as a genre in the Antiquity, the link between the dialogue and what we may call the diatribic tone and finality (i. e. a parenetic exhortation to philosophy), which characterizes certains texts by Lucian of Samosata, did not go unnoticed by Renaissance humanists. Giovanni Pontano's "Charon" shows it. A prominent Napolitan humanist, he shared his most secret doubts in this Lucianic dialogue set in hell, but he also expressed his most sincere ideal of wisdom, inspired by stoicisim and cynicism, set against ordinary irrationality. Through the voice of Charon and the judges of hell, he argues vividly against the human passions afflicting Italian cities, the vain intellectualism of some colleagues or rivals, or religious superstitions. But satire finally gives way to the exemplary discourses of two noble souls, that of the Tuscan and the Umbrian, whom we interpret as a figuration of Leon Battista Alberti, author of the "Momus", and Pontano himself.

The Effect of Rayleigh-Taylor Instabilities on the Thickness of Undifferentiated Crust on Kuiper Belt Objects like Charon

    No full text
abstract: In this thesis I model the thermal and structural evolution of Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) and explore their ability to retain undifferentiated crusts of rock and ice over geologic timescales. Previous calculations by Desch et al. (2009) predicted that initially homogenous KBOs comparable in size to Charon (R ~ 600 km) have surfaces too cold to permit the separation of rock and ice, and should always retain thick (~ 85 km) crusts, despite the partial differentiation of rock and ice inside the body. The retention of a thermally insulating, undifferentiated crust is favorable to the maintenance of subsurface liquid and potentially cryovolcanism on the KBO surface. A potential objection to these models is that the dense crust of rock and ice overlying an ice mantle represents a gravitationally unstable configuration that should overturn by Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instabilities. I have calculated the growth rate of RT instabilities at the ice-crust interface, including the effect of rock on the viscosity. I have identified a critical ice viscosity for the instability to grow significantly over the age of the solar system. I have calculated the viscosity as a function of temperature for conditions relevant to marginal instability. I find that RT instabilities on a Charon-sized KBO require temperatures T > 143 K. Including this effect in thermal evolution models of KBOs, I find that the undifferentiated crust on KBOs is thinner than previously calculated, only ~ 50 km. While thinner, this crustal thickness is still significant, representing ~ 25% of the KBO mass, and helps to maintain subsurface liquid throughout most of the KBO's history.Dissertation/ThesisM.S.
