    Anisotropic frustrated Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice

    We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of an anisotropic Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with competing interactions. We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations, as well as linear spin-wave and Ising series expansions, to determine the phase boundaries of the ordered magnetic phases. We find a region without any classical order in the vicinity of a highly frustrated point. Higher-order correlation functions in this region give no signal for long-range valence-bond order. The low-energy spectrum is derived via exact diagonalization to check for topological order on small-size periodic lattices. © 2012 American Physical Society.Fil: Kalz, Ansgar.     We study a ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin system on the square lattice, with nearest-neighbor interaction J(1) frustrated by second, J(2), and third, J(3), neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions, using a mean-field theory for the Schwinger boson representation of spins. For J(3) = 0 we find that the boundary between the ferromagnetic and the collinear classical phases shifts to smaller values of J(2) when quantum fluctuations are included.     Magnetization plateaus in dimerized spin-ladder arrays

    We investigate the ground-state magnetization plateaus appearing in spin-(Formula presented) two-leg ladders built up from dimerized antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains and dimerized zig-zag interchain couplings. Using both Abelian bosonization and Lanczos methods we find that the system yields rather unusual plateaus and exhibits massive and massless phases for specific choices or “tuning” of exchange interactions.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Magnetism of finite graphene samples: Mean-field theory compared with exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo simulations

    The magnetic properties of graphene on finite geometries are studied using a self-consistent mean-field theory of the Hubbard model. This approach is known to predict ferromagnetic edge states close to the zigzag edges in single-layer graphene quantum dots and nanoribbons. In order to assess the accuracy of this method, we perform complementary exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo simulations.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Finite-temperature ordering in a two-dimensional highly frustrated spin model

    We investigate the classical counterpart of an effective Hamiltonian for a strongly trimerized kagome lattice. Although the Hamiltonian only has a discrete symmetry, the classical groundstate manifold has a continuous global rotational symmetry. Two cases should be distinguished for the sign of the exchange constant. In one case, the groundstate has a 120. spin structure. To determine the transition temperature, we perform Monte Carlo simulations and measure the specific heat and the order parameter as well as the associated Binder cumulant. In the other case, the classical groundstates are macroscopically degenerate. A thermal order- by- disorder mechanism is predicted to select another 120. spin structure. A finite but very small transition temperature is detected by Monte Carlo simulations using the exchange method

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
