‘I’m not really a clown’: critical reflection on a Clown Cabaret Scratch Night

    No full text
This article is a critical reflection on the Clown Cabaret Scratch Night at Assembly Roxy, 14 November 2014, organised by Plutôt la Vie and CloWnStePPing. It considers the variety of acts included in the show and how this plurality connects to the wider contemporary genre of theatre clown. From a participant-observer perspective, I introduce the tensions and contradictions in and between the acts. I suggest that this event can provide a snapshot of how the genre is currently perceived and practiced in Scotland today. Of particular prominence are the role of the ‘flop’ in the clown’s relationship with the audience, the tension between rehearsal and spontaneity, and the connection to the ‘authentic self ’ of the performer this implies.Publisher PD

Presence. A conversation at Cabaret Voltaire, Zurich

    No full text
Recently, the idea of “presence” has returned to the arts, humanities, and social sciences. In February 2013, in Zurich’s historical Cabaret Voltaire, which was central to the Dada movement almost a hundred years ago, an experimental international symposium took place that put presence under the microscope. Presence: A Conversation at Cabaret Voltaire, Zurich is not a traditional post-conference publication but is conceived as a theatrical discussion of ideas between different speakers, both on and offstage. In contrast to transcribed conversations, monologues are interspersed throughout the book, acting like small, performative interruptions. The lively juxtaposition of both individual speech and colloquy is enhanced by theatrical conventions: characters enter and exit; stage directions mirror those found in the cabaret

Oxygen K-edge XANES of germanates investigated using first-principles calculations

    No full text
O K-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra of alpha-quartz-type and rutile-type GeO2 polymorphs and of K2Ge8O17 have been analyzed using first-principles plane-wave pseudopotential calculations. XANES spectra have been calculated using supercell including core-hole effects and good agreement with experiment has been obtained. In the the case of GeO2 polymorphs, local density of empty states has been performed and peaks in the experimental spectra can be assigned to transitions involving hybridization of the O p orbitals with the Ge s, Ge p, Ge sp, and Ge d orbitals. Furthermore, peak positions in the theoretical spectra appear to be correlated with changes in the Ge-O-Ge angle as well as indirectly with the Ge coordination geometry. Analysis of O K-edge XANES spectra for individual O sites in K2Ge8O17 shows that oxygens shared between two fivefold Ge atoms or one fourfold and one fivefold Ge atom exhibit subtle shifts to lower energy of the peaks, which have been previously observed in alkali germanate glasses at and above the germanate anomaly

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
