University Technology Transfer: How (in-)efficient are French universities?
No full textThis paper presents the first assessment of the efficiency of the technology transfer operated by the French university system and its main determinants. The analysis is based on a detailed and original database of 51 TTOs, categorized by type of university they belong to, over the period 2003-2007. Overall, we find a low level of efficiency and both intra-category and inter-categories efficiency variation. The analysis of determinants showed that French TTOs efficiency depends extensively on the nature of the category (with universities specialised in science and engineering being the most efficient ones), on institutional and environmental characteristics. We found that both the seniority of TTO and size of the university have a positive effect. In terms of environmental variables, the intensity of R&D activity (both private and public) has a positive impact; however, in terms of growth rate, only the Private R&D activity seems to be the main driver. Lastly, we find that the presence of a university-related hospital is detrimental for the efficiency. An extended discussion of the results within the existing literature is also offered
Measuring the technical efficiency of French TTOs: first insights
No full textThis paper uses an original and detailed dataset (managed by the BETA for the French Ministry of Education and Research) which collects two comprehensive surveys on French universities’ TTOs to shed light on the functioning of French TTOs.
The sample is made by various inputs and outputs of around 80 French university TTOs over the period 2000-2005. The dataset includes revenue from R&D contracts, university revenue from basic research, number of TTO’s technical personnel specialized in R&D contracts and, annual budget of TTOs.
The main contribution of the paper is then to assess quantitatively and in a rigorous way the performance of French TTOs, by using a bootstrap-based non parametric approach (for details see Daraio and Simar, 2007). The issue is of high policy relevance and well recognized by policymakers and university managers as one of the engines of economic growth
A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1
No full textSpectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1

A temperatura de 27°C proporcionou uma maior e mais rápida germinação de sementes de Piper aduncum. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
No full textWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
