Alpine tectonothermal evolution of the Tuscan Metamorphic Complex in the Larderello geothermal field (northern Apennines, Italy)
No full textOn the internal (Tyrrhenian) side of the northern Apennines, high heat flow and geothermal gradient
in the Larderello geothermal field are evidence of a large-scale thermal anomaly, related to the emplacement
of a large batholith of Pliocene age extending from the upper to middle crust. These intrusions relate to the
Miocene to Recent northern Apennines magmatism, which developed as a result of crustal extension and
upwelling of the asthenosphere at the base of the thinned crust. In the subsurface of the Larderello geothermal
field, medium- and high-grade metamorphic rocks (Tuscan Metamorphic Complex) cored in several
geothermal wells, have previously been considered to be Variscan basement. New structural and petrographic
data on these metamorphic rocks indicate an Alpine tectonometamorphic history and provide evidence that
medium- to high-grade mineral assemblages are related to Pliocene thermal metamorphism centred on
intrusions at shallow depth. These data allow a new interpretation of the Tuscan Metamorphic Complex as a
tectonic wedge of the Late Palaeozoic–Triassic units, and in particular highlight the considerable extent of
Pliocene thermal metamorphism and hydrothermal circulation as a result of convective cooling of intrusions
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textAccording to certain medieval philosophers, perspective is a “demonstrative science” as it reveals the connection between sensible and intelligible visions by means of the mathematical rules of geometric optics. Carrying over concepts and methods of the medieval "perspectiva naturalis" into a plane surface, the Renaissance "perspectiva artificialis" unfurls a new “pictorial” space. To appreciate the impact of quantum theory on determinism and computation issues this paper will adopt a “perspectival” approach: the architecture of the theory, first captured in the ‘real’ three dimensional space, will lead us into a new ‘imaginary’ space. Here the bilateral symmetry coupling any possibility with its negation, sized by “complex probability amplitudes”, may dissolve the ‘ignorance’ of classical probabilities as well as the ‘blindness’ of finite mechanical procedures
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. La famiglia come palestra di democrazia: il rispetto di sé e dell’altro
No full textLa democrazia familiare, sia in termini concettuali che quale modalità interpersonale, è una conquista sufficientemente recente tanto della pedagogia quanto delle altre scienze umane e sociali. Indispensabile, comunque, per il futuro stesso della società e della famiglia, perché è in famiglia, a partire dall’equilibrio nelle relazioni fra i coniugi (o i conviventi) e dal loro affiatamento, che si costruiscono le premesse e le fondamenta delle strutture di personalità e dei comportamenti successivi delle persone. Ben distanti, peraltro, in questo saggio, da un’interpretazione e da una costruzione lineari di causa ed effetto tra famiglia e società, per l’evidente presenza che viene riconosciuta pure ad altre istituzioni ed eventi, quali, ad esempio, la scuola, o il gruppo dei pari. Giacché la famiglia non è una monade leibniziana senza porte e senza finestre, o un microcosmo solipsistico, e si caratterizza, piuttosto, come un ambiente di trasformazione sia rispetto al dato di ingresso, rappresentato dai neo-coniugi e dai neo-genitori, sia nei confronti dell’elemento in uscita, che ci si augura possa essere costituito da coniugi, genitori, minori e adulti di domani, maggiormente democratici. Da qui il ricorso, già nel titolo, al termine “palestra”, e il continuo rimando alle molteplici e necessarie pratiche di “esercizio” richieste. Che esigono, imprescindibilmente, la formazione personale permanente, long-life, di quanti andranno a comporre un nucleo familiare, sin dalla nascita. Occorre, pertanto, il definitivo radicamento di una pedagogia della famiglia, o, meglio, delle famiglie, a favore della crescita di ogni singola persona, in una prospettiva, finalmente incarnata, di educazione alla famiglia e, per altro verso, di educazione in famiglia, rivolte entrambe al benessere della famiglia medesima, di generazione in generazione. Per il raggiungimento di questo obiettivo, occorre, però, disporre da subito, e in misura consistente, di testimoni autentici della famiglia, e, per l’ipotesi e il fine che qui ci guidano, di testimoni autentici e capaci della famiglia democratica. Memori, in questo, che educare, sempre, ma particolarmente oggi, è, in specie, testimoniare. Una pedagogia delle famiglie, non di meno, che adotti lo stile formativo e il quadro concettuale dell’educazione degli adulti, e si ponga, anzi, come l’ultima espressione procedurale di questo settore teorico-pratico di studio e di intervento. L’assunto di base della decisione e della decisione democratica è, comunque, che ogni individuo ha diritto, capacità e responsabilità di prendersi in carico la propria vita. È, questa, una sfida di vastissime proporzioni nel rapporto tra i coniugi, e soprattutto tra genitori e figli, particolarmente quando questi sono adolescenti e giovani. Perché educare non soltanto si debba, ma peculiarmente si possa. Del resto, vivere è costantemente “scegliere” e tutta la vita è un sistema di decisioni auspicabilmente sane, corrette e pertanto democratiche che, come tali, affondano nel riconoscimento di sé e dell’altro, nel rispetto per sé e per l’altro, nella solidarietà concepita, praticata e vissuta. Di conseguenza, una società sempre più organizzata e caratterizzata in tal senso fungerà, allo stesso modo, da schema di riferimento positivo e da rinforzo di significativo valore nei riguardi di una famiglia maggiormente competente nel promuovere e attuare condotte e abiti democratici

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
