Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Despite the available evidence of the general effectiveness for the therapeutic modality, the exact mechanisms through which therapeutic change occurs are not completely understood. Psychotherapy process research pursues the investigation of those mechanisms of therapeutic change involved in psychotherapy. Given the complex, dynamical, non-linear and multivariate nature of the object under investigation, this field faces methodological challenges and demand a huge effort to be carried out, from the collection to the analysis of data, and, even so, the amount of information produced is usually not enough to represent and explore the variety of processes known to happen in psychotherapies. Computer sciences have developed tools, such as machine learning and dynamic systems modeling, that may be helpful to deal with these problems. This systematic scoping review sought to organize the studies that made these efforts. 39 studies that used computational methods to analyze data from psychotherapy process research were identified by a systematized search conducted in the major computer science, psychiatry, and psychology databases. The studies had their methodology classified into data-driven, theory-driven, or hybrid categories. The sample had 19 data-driven, 7 theory-driven, and 13 hybrid studies. The sample had a total of 90 computational techniques, 21 from natural language processing, 20 from dynamic systems, and 49 from machine learning, described systematically in this review. In general, the area seems to be in an incipient phase, still disorganized and with little connection between studies, but exploratory with some results that seem very promising. Future findings may impact research, clinical practice, and the training of therapists, especially if the field works more cohesivel

This is due to the fact that retrieving a memory makes it temporarily labile and open to modification while its reconsolidation occurs (between 10 minutes and 6 hours after the memory retrieval). As extinction is a major component of Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), we tested whether delivering PE sessions after retrieving the traumatic memory, during its reconsolidation, would produce stronger decreases in reactivity to these memories than standard PE. Patients with PTSD had either their traumatic (n = 21) or a neutral (n =21) memory retrieved 1 hour before PE session for two consecutive days. One day before and one day after, patients were exposed to a script-driven imagery of their traumatic event, during which skin conductance responses (SCR) were measured and, immediately after, subjective responses were assessed by a Visual Analogic Scale. With respect to the physiological measure, the Multiple Linear Regression statistical model explained 35.3% of the variance observed [adjusted R2 = 0.32; F(2,39) =10.66; p < 0.001], and revealed that the traumatic retrieval one hour before the PE enhanced the effects over SCR (p = 0.024). On the other hand, in terms of the subjective measure, the model explained only 9.8% of the variance observed [adjusted R2 = 0.05; F (2,39) = 2.12; p = 0.133] and the traumatic memory retrieval did not show evidence of its effect over the results (p = 0,214). Our results point to a potential augmenting strategy of behavioral treatment of trauma-related disorders. Further studies are needed to define the ideal parameters of applied us

A portion of individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) present complex symptomatologies, with symptoms significantly exceeding those described by the PTSD diagnosis. This symptomatology has been the subject of scholarly debates for two decades, leading to the formulation of another diagnosis: complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). CPTSD is characterized by symptoms of PTSD combined with symptoms of disturbance in self-organization (DSO), including negative self-concept, emotional regulation issues, and difficulties in feeling emotionally close to others. Trust behavior, being an essential aspect of human social behavior, becomes of interest in understanding CPTSD. Using an experimental paradigm developed by FeldmanHall et al. (2018), which involves the Trust Game and a procedure presenting stimuli with varying degrees of similarity, this study aims to investigate the effects of a psychotherapeutic intervention on the trust behavior of individuals with CPTSD and observe differences in behavior patterns between these individuals and healthy controls. Eighty-eight participants engaged in a Trust Game, undergoing multiple rounds with partners exhibiting three reciprocity patterns (trustworthy, neutral, and untrustworthy). In the second phase of the procedure, participants selected faces representing potential partners for another hypothetical round of the Trust Game. These faces shared physical similarities with the partners from the previous game. Results indicated that individuals with CPTSD initially displayed less trust behavior than controls but significantly increased trust behavior towards trustworthy partners after the psychotherapeutic intervention. Additionally, while controls reduced investment in the untrustworthy partner, a desirable response the same was not observed in individuals with CPTSD. Their investments in the untrustworthy partner did not change significantly from pre- to post-intervention, although there was a tendency to increase. This suggests a difficulty in discrimination, aligning with other studies addressing the discrimination behavior of individuals with PTSD (Bell, 2018; Fertuck, 2016). These results suggest that interventions for CPTSD may benefit from specific elements of discriminative training, as it is crucial for this population to have or develop the ability to prevent retraumatization. Emphasizing the importance of further studies investigating the discrimination difficulties of individuals with this diagnosis, along with the development of interventions directly addressing this repertoire, is crucial. Furthermore, this study allows the observation of behavioral patterns in individuals with CPTSD, aiding in the understanding of this diagnosis and differentiation from other conditions with similarities, such as PTSD and Borderline Personality Disorder

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

The condition is often accompanied by psychiatric comorbidities, with severe cases resistant to treatment that require new therapeutic strategies. The psychopathology of PTSD is characterized by the exacerbation of the response to trauma-conditioned aversive stimuli and this dysregulation can be explained by dysfunctional learning and memory. Traumatic memories are strongly present even years after trauma and the maintenance of this memory is usually related to behavioral and physiological responses that imply clinically significant distress and impairment in important areas of the individual\'s life. It is known that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is capable of intervening in the consolidation and reconsolidation of memories, in addition to being a safe and effective tool for the treatment of various psychiatric disorders. The present study sought to investigate whether the application of ECT after retrieving the traumatic memory (within the memory reconsolidation window) could reduce physiological reactivity to traumatic memory and, secondarily, reduce clinical symptomatology and subjective responses related to trauma, promoting improvement in the condition. Therefore, patients with PTSD treated with ECT underwent retrieval of their traumatic memories (n = 8) or neutral memories (n = 6) immediately before each ECT application. Participants underwent four assessments: before treatment and 1 week, 3 months, and 6 months after the treatment completion. The assessments included a script-driven imagery procedure during which patients had skin conductance responses (SCR) and subjective responses measured using Visual Analog Scales (VAS). Standard scales were also applied to check symptoms of mood (Hamilton Depression Scale HAMD), anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, trait version STAIt) and trauma (Davidson Trauma Scale DTS). No treatment group, time or group-time interaction effects were observed on SCR (p 0.191). Effects of time were observed in HAMD (p = 0.011) and in STAIt (p = 0.038), but not in the treatment group or group-time interaction (p 0.655). No treatment group, time or group-time interaction effects were observed on DTS and VAS (p 0.141). Finally, there was a reduction in the mean scores between the pre- and post-ECT assessments of all subjective measures (p 0.017), but not in physiological reactivity (SCR, p = 0.241), regardless of the treatment group. In summary, the study was not able to demonstrate a significant effect of pre-ECT traumatic retrieval, but a statistically significant reduction in HAMD, STAIt, DTS and VAS scores was observed after treatment, regardless of the recall group, suggesting that ECT may be a useful therapeutic tool in PTS
