- The old, art nouveau market in Ancona is an iron and cast-iron construction built between 1923 and 1926 to act as a roof over the existing city market in Piazza delle Erbe. It is a symbol of both the city and an architectural style that spread between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The building - with its very complex shape and materials - is now seriously deteriorated and poorly preserved; this poses a considerable technical and methodological challenge even though its digitalisation is crucial to its conservation and enhancement. This contribution describes the complex documentation process, including the use of historical drawings , to trace its fascinating history

Villa Adriana in Tivoli: a method of survey for archaeological heritage

The complex of Villa Adriana at Tivoli is an outstanding archaeological site for its extension and articulation as well as for its state of conservation and originality. It is a sort of synthesis of the Roman genius for construction, providing an interesting review of all typological and construction techniques, from the villa to the theatre, the amphitheatre and the baths. Villa Adriana continues to intrigue and fascinate the scholars analysing its complex functional plan and to challenge the designers called upon to devise preservation works or to plan functional spaces and structures for tourist reception and management. Either operation requires the study, survey and representation of structures and remains. The survey of complex structures like archaeological constructions is performed with techniques based on the integrated use of 3D Laser Scanning, photogrammetry and 3D modeling techniques and photorealistic rendering. These tools allow to obtain complex models that correctly represent the various elements that can then be used for the representation of objects, also with popularization purposes. The models will thus be virtual databases providing for easy consultation by any type of user. Since the diffusion of the information regarding this site for tourist purposes cannot but pass also through the Web, the most effective communication tool of our time, the material has been developed and organized for Web diffusion with a view to granting access to the virtual tourist to a reality of 3D scenarios and models that provide a highly realistic synthesis

The pandemic crisis dramatically highlighted the fragility of culture and, in particular, of our tangible and intangible, artistic and historical heritage. A fragility determined substantially by the absence of relations, of which the heritage lives on in the historical succession of the societies that preserve and share it. In the days of Covid, when all museums, archaeological sites and places of culture were closed, there was an urgent need to reflect on how to keep these relationships alive, through digital technologies. The article outlines theoretical and methodological reflections for a manifesto of good operative and scientific practices, starting from several experiences conducted in the field of Digital Humanities. Four closely connected steps on which to leverage for a conscious and sustainable digital supply chain are explained: scientific digitization, new forms of virtual interaction, measurement of public acceptance, training of new skills

ICT driven platform for high-quality virtual contents creation and sharing with e-Tourism purposes. The interreg IT-HR REMEMBER project

This paper describes REMEMBER, an EU project which aims at establishing a network for joint valorization of 8 ports in Italy and Croatia, trying to shift the paradigm of touristic flows toward a sustainable tourism. The key point is an innovative ICT architecture, modular and scalable, to share information at different system levels of detail and fruition, with an interoperable and multi-channel approach. Given its flexibility, contents can be conveniently displayed in different ways: Web portals, fixed installations, mobile devices etc. This infrastructure enables a great number of Digital Experiences (DEs) that can be exploited at both global and local scale. Since the project is on going, the paper presents a first overview of the instantiate methodology, as well as briefly introduces the DEs that are currently designed and, finnaly, reports a prospective outlook related to the post-pandemic scenario

LA DIGITALIZZAZIONE PER LA DOCUMENTAZIONE, LO STUDIO E LA FRUIZIONE DI UN SITO ARCHEOLOGICO. LA VR EXPERIENCE DEL TEATRO DI RICINA, Digitization for the documentation, study and fruition of an archeological site. The Virtual Reality experience of the Ricina Theater

This paper presents a workflow developed thanks to the collaboration between archae- ologists and engineers, aimed at the documentation, representation and virtual fruition of an archaeological site. The purpose is to exploit the data acquired through digital solutions and the consequent elaboration of a reality 3D model to support archaeological studies and to effectively disseminate their results. The presented case study is the Roman Theatre of Ricina (Villa Potenza, MC). The building has preserved much of its masonry, but it is very different from that which could be appreciated by the audience of theatrical performances in Roman times. The work has been developed according to three steps: 1) digital documentation of the site and elaboration of a reality-based 3D model; 2) study of the archaeological finds thanks to the reality-based 3D model and design of a possible reconstruction, represented through a second 3D model elaborated by anastylosis; 3) development of a Virtual Reality environment for the fruition and the interaction with the two 3D models. The final output is therefore an immersive VR application that offers the possibility to access to the theatre both in its current form and in the original one. An experience that is not limited to a simple visualization rather presenting itself as a guided tour across the centurie

Digital experience of the work of vitruvius and leonardo

On the celebrations for the 500th year since Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the city of Fano (I) organized an exhibition on the works of Leonardo to put in evidence the influence of the previous studies of Vitruvius, who left in Fano remarkable signs of his talent. Among the original drawings that were shown, some sheets showed the design of three machines originally described by Vitruvius and then re-interpreted by Leonardo: the water clockwork, the ballista and the odometer. The Authors realized a digital reconstruction of such works, with the aim to let the visitors of the exhibition understand the operation of the machines but also to study the differences in the concepts, to explore their feasibility and to assess their possible performance
