Advanced Seismic Assessment of Four Masonry Bell Towers in Italy after Operation Modal Analysis (OMA) Identification
The paper presents an advanced seismic assessment of four masonry bell towers located in Northern Italy based on detailed 3D FE models on which elastic parameters were previously identified by operational modal analysis. The numerical assessment includes a preliminary identification of the elastic moduli of the different volumes of each tower made by means of a fast-micro-GA approach. After proper identification of the main four eigenfrequencies, non-linear static (pushover) and full non-linear dynamic analyses are performed adopting a material model for masonry which is characterized by softening and two distinct damage parameters in both tension and compression. The results obtained with non-linear static and non-linear dynamic analyses in all the simulations performed exhibit a satisfactory match, suggesting similar conclusions in terms of general dynamic response and seismic vulnerability of the towers
Effects of shear stiffness, rotatory and axial inertia, and interface stiffness on free vibrations of a two-layer beam
Flexural wave propagation in infinite beams on a unilateral elastic foundation
The problem of flexural wave propagation on a beam resting on a unilateral elastic substrate is addressed. The Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, which is valid for slender beams and for large enough wave length, is used. The governing equations are recalled, and the boundary conditions corresponding to the “single wave” periodic solutions are determined. The ensuing system of three algebraic transcendental equations is solved, and the exact solution of the problem is provided, in spite of the nonlinearity due to the piecewise behavior of the soil. The wave velocity as function of the foundation stiffness is obtained and compared with the classical case of the bilateral foundation. The main wave propagation properties are discussed, and some of them are illustrated with graphs reporting wave shapes
The impact of growth and distribution on poverty: Recent evidence for Sub-Saharan Africa
While economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has surged substantially since the second half of the 1990s, the amount of poverty reduction has been far less spectacular. Using 1991-2018 World Bank data and a decomposition of poverty changes into growth and distribution components based on a parametric specification of the income density function, the chapter explores the translation of recent growth to poverty reduction for a large number of countries in SSA. The study finds that, on average, income growth has been the major driving force behind poverty changes. The analysis, however, documents substantial country differences that are masked by this dominant-growth story. While in the majority of countries growth was the major factor behind declines or increases in poverty, distributional changes, nevertheless, played a crucial role in poverty behavior in a large number of countries. And even in those countries where growth has been the main driver of poverty reduction, further progress could have occurred without relatively unfavorable income distribution. The present study particularly points to income polarization - a concept related to but distinct from inequality - as a widespread phenomenon in the region and further limiting the effectiveness of growth in reducing poverty
