Association between the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae and potential avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC)
Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is a group of strains responsible for avian colibacillosis, an impactful disease for poultry farming. The spread of APEC is mainly horizontal, and insects may play a role in their dissemination. However, no data are available about the interaction of APEC with Dermanyssus gallinae, a major arthropodal parasite of poultry. Escherichia coli was detected in the microbiome of the mite, but no specific data have been published till now. Therefore, the presence of the most diffused APEC-associated serogroups has been assessed by PCR in mites collected from 30 flocks of 21 Italian commercial laying hens farms. Escherichia coli was found in 53.3% of the tested groups, corresponding to 66.7% of farms. The most frequent serogroup was O2, but O8, O78, and O109 were also detected. More detailed investigations were carried out in a laying hen farm that was experiencing colibacillosis by APEC O2. The same serogroup was found in both hens and mites, and the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) of the infection rate (IR) resulted in 24.39 infected mites per thousand, with a pathogen load of 171.47 E. coli O2 cells per mite. The results strongly support the hypothesis of an association between PRM and APEC, confirmed by the contemporary circulation of the same serogroup in both hens and mites, suggesting the potential of D. gallinae as a reservoir or APEC
RT-PCR based strategy to identify Rabbit Haemorragic Disease Virus (Italy)
Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV) and European Brown Hare Syndrome Virus (EBHSV) are two virus belonging to the Lagovirus genus. They cause a hemorrhagic disease in rabbits and hare, respectively. The high mortality (up to 100%), and the great contagious potential of the viruses make them very dangerous for both wild and domestic animals. The viruses have a number of variants, and recently a new RHDV variant has been widely circulating among rabbits, mainly in France. The variability of viruses may cause some problem in the molecular diagnosis. We set up a RT-PCR based method which could widen the efficacy of the existing molecular techniques, as it could detect simultaneously the variants of RHDV, including the French variants, and the EBHSV, furthermore discriminating the two viral species
Vaccinazione antivaiolosa D'emergenza in serinus canaria (aves) durante l'attività riproduttiva ed approccio terapeutico con isoprinosina
The fowl pox is a severe and common viral disease of the canary birds. In the following report both cutaneous and respiratory shapes from a Fife and Gloster canary breeding were observed. The disease was responsible of conjunctivitis, vesciculae and pustulae all around the eyes and the beak; after, a distribution of the lesions as scabs on the toes was registered too. The diagnosis was confirmed by viral isolation on CAM of chicken embryos; characteristic viral pox particles were identified from scabs with electron microscope. [...
Preputial urolithiasis in a rabbit
A 5-year-old pet rabbit was presented with a large mass in the preputial sac which was painful on palpation. The mass was firm and resulted in distension of the prepuce (Fig 1A). Blood analyses showed no alteration apart from a slight increase of lymphocytes. Serum biochemistry results showed 14.5 mg/dL calcium (physi-ological range: 8 to 14.8) and 2.5 mg/dL phosphorus (physi-ological range 2.3 to 6.9). Four uroliths were visualised in the preputial area on radiographs (Fig 1B). The rabbit was anaes-thetised and all calculi were removed from the prepuce through a small incision (Fig 1C). Antibiotic (5 mg/kg q12h enrofloxa-cin) and anti-inflammatory (0.5 mg/kg q24h meloxicam) were orally administered for 6 and 3 days, respectively. The uroliths were rounded, yellowish to white, compact, with a diameter of about 2 and 0.5 cm, respectively (Fig 1D). Chemical analyses confirmed the stones as agglomerates of calcium carbonate crys-tals. Urolithiasis is a pathological condition which is diagnosed more often in middle-aged and old rabbits. It is believed that the physiological calciuria of rabbits may predispose to the onset of urolithiasis, but several secondary factors such as dehydration, diet with high calcium content, obesity and pathological condi-tions that interfere with calcium metabolism may result in the abnormal accumulation of insoluble calcium carbonate crystals in the urinary tract. Urolithiasis may occur in the urinary blad-der, in the kidneys or in the ureters. Preputial retention of uro-liths is an uncommon presentation in rabbit

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
