The 1997-1998 Umbria-Marche post-earthquakes investigation: Perspective from a decade of analyses and debates on the surface fractures
The Umbria-Marche sequence represents the first case in Italy for which the surface effects of a moderate seismic event (5<M<6) were systematically investigated and documented. Surface fractures attributed to the events were mapped by several groups of researchers. The coseismic features were expressed mainly by NW-SE trending, discontinuous, linear open fractures, as well as fracture swarms, locally with centimetric vertical displacements. They affected rocks and loose deposits, buildings, and roads. Because of the earthquake sizes (M≤6), the deformation was faint, making the detection difficult and giving rise to different seismotectonic interpretations: specifically, surface rupture of the seismogenic fault, triggered slip on secondary faults, and shaking-induced sliding of debris. Consequently, different models of connection between surface offsets and displacements at depth were proposed that integrated geology with other geophysical data. However, whether direct or indirect expression of the deep dislocation, the geometry of these fractures reflected the seismogenic structure. Even in the case of these moderate-earthquakes features, geomorphical and paleoseismological studies provide data for reconstructing the recent tectonic evolution of the region and for determining the frequency and size of earthquakes. Finally, we learned a more efficient way to prepare for post-earthquake emergency response, particularly for long-lasting sequences in highly vulnerable built environments, such as the ancient villages within the Apennines.Published361-3813.2. On the occurrence of large earthquakes: New insights from a model based on interacting faults embedded in a realistic tectonic setting
Earthquake occurrence stems from a complex interaction of processes that are still partially unknown. This lack of knowledge is revealed by the different statistical distributions that have been so far proposed and by the different beliefs about the role of some key components as the tectonic setting, fault recurrence, seismic clusters, and fault interaction. Here, we explore these issues through a numerical model based on a realistic interacting fault system. We use an active fault system in central Italy responsible for moderate to large earthquakes, where geometric and kinematic parameters of each structure can be confidently assessed. Then, we generate synthetic catalogs by modeling different seismogenic processes and allowing coseismic and postseismic fault interaction. The comparison of synthetic and real seismic catalogs highlights many interesting features: (1) synthetic seismic catalogs reproduce the short-term clustering and the long-term modulation observed in the historical catalog of the last centuries; (2) a recurrent model of earthquake occurrence on faults is more effective than a Poisson model to explain such short-term and long-term time features; (3) a realistic fault pattern is a key component to generate stochasticity in the seismic catalog, preventing a systematic time ‘‘synchronization’’ of strongly coupled faults; (4) such a stochasticity may put strong limits to the forecasting capability of models based on fault interaction, even though the latter is a key component of the process. Finally, the model allows explicit predictions on future paleoseismological observations to be made
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. A large unknown historical earthquake in the Abruzzi region (Central Italy): combination of geological and historical data
The combination of paleoseismological and historical investigation can be used to obtain a complete knowledge
of past earthquakes. In Italy the 1000 year-long record of historical earthquakes provides an opportunity
to compare data from the catalogue with results from paleoseismologic investigations. Trenching results along
the Ovindoli-Pezza Fault (OPF). in the Abruzzi region. showed two surface faulting events. The most recent of
these events occurred after 1019 A.D. and should be reported in the Catalogue of Italian Seismicity. Nevertheless,
the earthquake appears to be missed or not well located in the Catalogue. In order to define in which century
a large earthquake on the OPF should have clearly left a sign in the historical record, we carried out historical
investigations back to the XI century. The studies were mainly focu5ed on disclosing possible >
e vidence for the occurrence of the most recent event along the OPF. No clear records related to this
event were found but on the basis of the information we obtained the occurrence of this earthquake can be
constrained between 1019 A.D. and the XV century. possibly between 1019 A.D. and XIII century.JCR Journalope
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
