Industrial workstations design: A real case study

    No full text
This research work advances the effective design of the most critical workstations belonging to a real industrial plant. To this end, the authors propose an approach based on the integration of Modelling & Simulation (M&S) tools, several ergonomic standards and the best known work measurement tools. The effective design of the workstations is achieved by using the simulation model for comparing workstations' alternative configurations. The comparison is based on ergonomic and time indexes related to the ergonomic standards and the work measurement tools. Such comparison allows to choose the workstations' final configurations. A Restoration has to preserve the authentic character of historic architecture and its meaningful stratifications; it must make the new structure distinguishable and suggest a compatible use. This cultural position sustained the intervention on the remains of the former Mother church of Santa Margherita di Belice in Sicily, now reused as “Museum of Memory”. The philological reconstruction of the collapsed parts in 1968 was discarded since the restoration project was focused on the conservation of the authentic fragment and the redefinition of the architectural shapes with new structural components. A scientific campaign of diagnostic tests (performed by LIRBA, University of Palermo) supported the consolidation of the stucco plasters, and the reintegrated parts were made with modern materials and techniques, as the sign of our culture. The new roof allows light to enter the interior of the former church and cross the screen of wooden slats that ideally proposes the shape of the collapsed vault. The paper is intended to introduce a summary of the reflections and choices, and present the final result of the restoration and reuse

Preservation of the remains and contemporary grafts in the former Mother Church of Santa Margherita di Belice in Sicily: ethics of restoration, conservation science and reuse

A restoration must preserve the authentic character of architecture and its historic stratifications, differentiate the new structure and suggest a compatible reuse. Modelling, simulation and ergonomic standards as support tools for a workstation design in manufacturing system

    No full text
It is the intent of the work to achieve the ergonomic effective design for a workstation belonging to a manufacturing system operating in the field of mechanical parts production. To this end, the NIOSH 81, NIOSH 91, Burandt Schultetus and OWAS analysis are accomplished for developing an improved workstation configuration in terms of interaction between humans and their working environment. Moreover the authors adopt an advanced approach based on Modeling & Simulation (M&S) in order to implement a three dimensional environment for recreating with satisfactory accuracy the real workstation and for detecting ergonomic problems that otherwise would be difficult to detect. In conclusion a final workstation configuration is proposed and significant ergonomics improvements are achieved

It is the intent of the work to achieve the ergonomic effective design of a workstation belonging to an industrial plant operating in the field of mechanical parts production. To this end, the authors propose an approach based on the integration of modelling and simulation tools and several ergonomic standards. Modelling and simulation tools are used to implement a three-dimensional environment capable of recreating, with satisfactory accuracy, the evolution over the time of the real workstation. The ergonomic standards are accomplished for evaluating and analysing the ergonomic risk level within the system being considered. Workstation modifications are incorporated in the simulation model and the effects (ergonomic risk level) of those changes are analysed for designing an improved workstation configuration in terms of interaction between operators and their industrial working environment.
