    A novel approach to improve accuracy in seismic fragility analysis: The modified intensity measure method

    Seismic fragilities, i.e., probabilities that structural systems exceed specified limit states, are used in Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering to characterize structural behavior during seismic events. Generally, seismic fragilities are constructed from structural responses to scaled accelerograms described by single/multiple ordinates of the pseudo-acceleration response spectrum, peak ground acceleration or other intensity measures. Recently, it was shown that the resulting fragilities provide limited if any information on the structural seismic performance if the dependence between intensity measures and demand parameters is weak. Yet, the method is used in Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering since the statistical uncertainty caused by the limited numbers of recorded ground accelerations is overcome by scaling these records. This study develops a method for estimating the fragility of linear systems for cases in which intensity measures and demand parameters are weakly correlated, i.e., situations in which the current methodology is inaccurate. The method is based on a linear transformation of samples of a given intensity measure which is designed to improve the correlation between demand and intensity parameters. The effectiveness of the proposed method for linear system is demonstrated by an elementary oscillator, a multi-degree of freedom system and a real complex multi-degree of freedom structural system

    Digital supply chain capabilities to face the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic

    The troubles in sourcing raw materials and components, as well as logistics bottlenecks due first to the COVID 19 pandemic and more recently to geopolitical tensions and conflicts, have contributed to strong turbulence in the supply chains. To deal effectively with these disruptive events, the mere adoption of digital technologies is not enough, but the targeted development of appropriate digital capabilities is also necessary. The literature has contributed to investigating capabilities in the supply chain, but the topic of digital capabilities to face disruptive scenarios is an under-investigated topic. In this regard, this article aims to answer the following question: How the digital capabilities were able to mitigate and reduce the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic? Therefore, the purpose of this article is to explore the role of digital technologies to enable the digital capabilities that can face the latest supply chain challenges. In addition, particular attention is paid to the role of digital capabilities in mitigating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, this paper adopts the empirical case-study methodology and develops a framework that can serve as a guide for companies facing the challenges listed.     Industry 4.0 technologies in support of circular Economy: A 10R-based integration framework

    The urgency of addressing global challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, and environmental degradation has positioned the Circular Economy (CE) as a crucial strategy for sustainable development. Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies have been recognized as key enablers of CE. However, a significant knowledge gap exists regarding how organizations can effectively integrate these technologies with CE strategies. Existing integration frameworks often focus narrowly on specific industries, technologies, or the traditional 3R model, neglecting the broader 10R framework and, hence, offering limited guidance. This paper addresses these gaps by developing a comprehensive 10R-based integration framework, providing practical guidance on how I4.0 technologies can support the full range of CE strategies. Using a literature review based on keywords’ clusters analysis, this study explores how I4.0 can support both implementation and decision-making in the CE 10Rs, providing a practical guide for businesses and supporting a broader shift towards sustainable business models. The results show that IoT, Big Data, and Digital Twins effectively support Rs related to smarter product use and manufacturing processes. Additive Manufacturing, Augmented/Virtual Reality, and Cognitive Twins are crucial in extending the lifespan of products or components. IoT, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, and human-robot collaboration can improve recycling practices and material recovery. The study reveals that while ’Reduce’ and ’Recycle’ dominate the literature, integrating I4.0 technologies with lesser-explored strategies like ’Reuse,’ ’Repurpose,’ ’Refurbish,’ and ’Remanufacture’ offers significant potential for future research. It also stresses the need to assess the energy and environmental impacts of I4.0 technologies themselves in the CE context

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
