    "Gen Ed locates serious discussion of general education in the context of some of the day-to-day realities encountered in putting it into practice and promoting efforts at reform at Metropolitan Atlantic University (aka the Metro). This dual focus is found in the often-pugnacious policy debate among the faculty and a more light-hearted discussion of related questions carried on by Professor Kelly as he models Socratic teaching in his upper-level class for prospective teachers. Reforming general education at the Metro is not free of the vanities and vulgarities of ambitious men and women and self-serving politicians, of course, nor those who poke fun at them. Arnie Smatter, the irrepressible and nosey chat show host of Radio YOY ensures that this does not go unnoticed. The overall humorous tone of Gen Ed does not detract from Mulcahy's thoughtful treatment of substantive issues that will be of interest to serious scholars, students, and a general readership.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Developing the 3DMath dynamic geometry software: theoretical perspectives on design

    Designing successful learning environments entails drawing on theoretical perspectives on learning while, at the same time, being cognisant of the affordances and constraints of the technology. This paper reports on the development of a software environment called 3DMath, a dynamic three-dimensional geometry microworld aimed at enabling learners to construct, observe and manipulate geometrical figures in a 3D-like space. During the development of 3DMath, the key elements of visualisation, including theoretical ideas of mental images, external representations, and the processes and abilities of visualisation, were taken into consideration. The aim of this paper is to illustrate how the design of this particular software was informed by these elements of visualisation, as well as by theories related to the philosophical basis of mathematical knowledge and by semiotics. The paper illustrates how the features of software can be designed to take account of relevant theoretical notions and to satisfy the characteristics of instructional techniques that are appropriate to theoretical perspectives on learning

    Discovering, creating and experiencing notions of theatricality in musical performance

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.This thesis consists of a portfolio of musical compositions and a written commentary. The submitted works creatively challenge the form of a conventional concert by exploring methods of bringing to the fore the theatrical side of musical performance: its inherited or implemented conceptual and visual aspects. The portfolio is divided into three main categories. The first comprises a series of pieces that balance between music theatre and conventional concert practices. The second category includes works that reform many aspects of the traditional concert presentation, without breaking away from it. The third category includes works that experiment within the territory determined by the previous categories. The written commentary presents theoretically the compositional approach used throughout the portfolio and provides a brief philosophical background, such as is necessary to explain the underlying concepts, ideas, preoccupations and concerns. It also contains a comprehensive analysis of the submitted works, their aims, contextual links, applied methodologies, associations with other composers’ works and interconnections between them
