Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Author, publisher and bookseller : a tripartite synergy in Nigerian book industry

    No full text
This work is about the roles of Author, Publisher and Bookseller in Book development in Nigeria. The paper started by delving into the history of Book Publishing in Nigeria after which it proceeded by defining who an author, a publisher, and a bookseller is and expatiated on the indispensable roles of these key actors in Nigerian Book Industry and in the emerging Information Society. Furthermore, the various constraints to book development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country

Design, realization, and experimental characterization of an admittance cell for low-frequency dielectric permittivity measurements on liquids

In this paper, the design, the realization, and the experimental characterization of a parallel-plate admittance cell with no guard ring, to be used for low-frequency dielectric permittivity measurements of liquids, are presented. In contrast to guarded-terminal cells, the proposed admittance cell can easily be connected to any LCR meter (even a two-terminal one) employing traditional test fixtures for axial/radial devices. In addition, the fringing effect is compensated for through a correction factor (α) obtained from electromagnetic simulations of the structure, rather than through time-consuming experiments on a number of reference liquids or adopting approximated theoretical formulations. Finally, to verify the suitability of the fabricated admittance cell for low-frequency dielectric spectroscopy and to assess its metrological performance, a set of measurements was carried out on six reference nonionic liquid materials. The results show that the accuracy is comparable with the typical measurement accuracy achievable, at much higher costs, when using commercial solutions

A double-sideband continuous-wave radar sensor for carotid wall movement detection

    No full text
A radar sensor suitable to record carotid wall movements has been developed and tested. The sensor is based on a double-sideband continuous-wave coherent transceiver, operating at 2.45 GHz, and on a bow-tie planar antenna optimized to operate in contact with the neck. Measured transceiver responses on a sliding short load are in good agreement with an analytical model and simulation results. An artificial model of the neck with an embedded pulsatile carotid-artery mockup has been built to test the radar. When the radar antenna is placed in contact with the neck model, an output voltage signal following the carotid diameter variations is measured. The signal amplitude follows the pressure wave imposed on the carotid artery mockup

Quality of life in headache suffering children and adolescents: self-report and parent-report.

Background The evaluation of Quality of Life (QOL) in children is different from adults, because it should take into account age-related characteristics. QOL instruments often do not consider the differences between parents and children in reporting the impact of headache on QOL. Patients and methods 272 (158 F, 114 M) headache sufferers (9–15 years old; M=11.59; SD=± 2.03) and their parents (192 mothers; 34 fathers; 59 both parents; 3 care takers) had been enrolled. Both child- ren and their parents filled in the symptomatologic questionnaire and the Impact scale of the Headache Specific Quality of Life of Children (HSQOL-C), in its validated form. Results Factorial Anova showed that the agreement parents-children is significantly higher for 12–15 years old than for 9–11 years old [F(1.255)=10.80; p=0.001]. We found a higher level of congruence between child and parent reports for symptomatologic questionnaire (objective aspects) than Impact scale (subjective aspects). In the latter, headache sufferers obtained higher scores compared to their parents. Conclusions Agreement parents-children increases proportionately with children’s age. It is likely due to the child’s cognitive improve- ment, mental and language skills. QOL instruments should taken into account age-related characteristics of child development
