Raison et “dévoilement”. Notes sur l’épistémologie soufie d’Ibn ‘Aṭā’ Allāh al-Iskandarī (m. 709/1309)
Prominent Shādhilī Sufi shaykh Ibn ‘Aṭā’ Allāh al-Iskandarī (d. 709 / 1309) played a major role in consolidating the “cooperation”
between mystical and juridical dimensions of Islam in Mamluk Egypt. In his Kitāb Latā’if al-minan, drawing the biographies of his predecessors
Abū l-‘Abbās al-Mursī (d. 686/1287) and Abū l-Ḥasan al-Shādhilī (d. 656/1258), he provides a full-fledged theory of sanctity (walāya) which relies
primarily on epistemological grounds. Considerations about human knowledge and its connections with divine love constitute the main support for
the author’s claim that the “friends of God” (awliyā’ Allāh) are the true ‘ulamā’ and thus, according to a well-known ḥadīth, the true legitimate “heirs
of the Prophet”. Far from simply opposing “acquired” and “inspired” knowledge, he stresses the inner unity between different religious sciences with
regard to their origin and their ultimate goal in God. He recommends a sound juridical formation as preliminary to the spiritual path, but he states that
proper understanding of the Law is only possible by means of spiritual illumination, and that every science (‘ilm) ultimately relies on divine
“unveiling” (kashf). In order to grasp Ibn ‘Atā’ Allah’s epistemological theories, his considerations on knowledge are analyzed on the background of
the theories of previous Muslim thinkers (with special regard to Abū Ḥāmid al-GhazāIī, d. 505/1111) as well as of the complex social and intellectual
networks in which the Shādhiliyya was involved at the time

Tarfīq versus Tazyīq On a Rare Sufi Term in Ibn Baṭṭūṭā and Jewish-Muslim Interactions in Medieval Egypt
The present paper focuses on two variant readings (tarfīq vs. tazyīq) of a rare Sufi term employed by Ibn Baṭṭūta (d. 1377) in his famous travelogue (Riḥla) to describe the “head between knees” Sufi practice. Indeed, evidence in support of the reading tazyīq was found by Paul Fenton (1990) in a thirteenth-century Judeo-Arabic text emanating from the Egyptian Jewish Sufi circle of Avraham Maimonides (d. 1237). However, specialists of Ibn Baṭṭūta have not taken full advantage from Fenton’s finding until now. In this framework, the present paper has two main objectives: (1) reconsidering the tarfīq vs. tazyīq dilemma on the historical background of textual studies on the Riḥla and supporting Fenton’s choice in favor of tazyīq; (2) interpreting Ibn Baṭṭūta’s references to this Sufi posture, in the light of Jewish and Islamic mystical literature, and of the socio-religious context of Medieval Egypt, with special focus on the Islamic Sufi group of the Shādhiliyya and their attitudes towards Jews and Judaism

In traditional societies, health and illness are often represented as associated to observance or non-observance of religious norms. Since a history of such representations in medieval Egypt is still far from having been written, the present paper focuses on a specific case study: the theories of the relationships between physiological, moral and spiritual dimensions of human life which can be found in Egyptian Sufi master Ibn ʿAṭā’ Allāh al-Iskandarī (d. 709/1309), third sheikh and first true “writer” of the ṭarīqa Šāḏiliyya (or at least of its mainstream branch). In this framework, special attention will be paid to a hitherto unexplored aspect of Ibn ʿAṭā’ Allāh’s thought: the relationships that he evokes between the practice of ḏikr and two fundamental physiological processes of the human body, namely blood circulation and food absorption. Ibn ʿAṭā’ Allāh’s references to these relationships show how deeply he was influenced by the “physiology of passions” (Paul Nwyia) developed by the Khurasanian theosophist, al-Ḥakīm al-Tirmiḏī (d. 318/930), a mystical thinker greatly appreciated by the founding masters of the Šāḏiliyya and noted by Ibn ʿAṭā’ Allāh as a major authority on the subject of sanctity (walāya)
“Il luogo delle memorie incrociate. Relazioni mediterranee e pensiero post-meridiano”

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
