UNDERSTANDING URBAN PATTERNS Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches

No full text
In this thesis, the main field of study is urban patternsand the methodological issues involving the analysis of spatialdata across urban space. Four particular aspects are chosen toillustrate the dynamics of urban space, using Stockholm Countyas case study. The first aspect deals with residential qualityby comparing three case study areas through use of amultiple-method approach. The second deals with urban areas astargets of planning actions or arenas of citizen participation.Urban areas as risky environments are assessed by looking atchanges in crime patterns since the 1980's, using spatialstatistical measures and Geographic Information Systems (GIS),which in itself constitutes the third chosen aspect underreview. The fourth and final aspect exemplifies the city as aplace of production through the analysis of clusters ofemployment within the culture sector. Paper I (Ceccato, 1998) deals with the assessment ofresidential quality of life in three case study areas inStockholm County and constitutes the Licentiate thesis. Paper II (Ceccato&Snickars, 2000) argues for a new useof Geographic Information Systems-GIS in local planning as anauxiliary tool for decision-making. Paper III (Ceccato et al., 2001) investigates changes sincethe early 1980's in offence patterns for residential burglary, theft of and from cars, and vandalism in Stockholm City usingmethods from spatial statistics. Paper IV (Ceccato&Karlström, 2000) proposes a newmeasure of spatial association, the S-statistic, which istested using a data set of employment in the cultural sectoracross the Stockholm County.</p

Crescita urbana e riuso di spazi industriali: dalla fondazione alla rifondazione di Alte Ceccato

No full text

Cognitive and emotional processing in brothers of individuals with anorexia nervosa: exploring familial cognitive vulnerability

No full text
Background: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with altered cognitive and emotional traits, including deficits in empathy, theory of mind (ToM), and increased alexithymia. While these traits are well-documented in affected individuals, little is known about their presence in unaffected male siblings, who share genetic and environmental risk factors. This study investigates whether male siblings of women with AN (bAN) exhibit intermediate cognitive-emotional traits compared to both their affected sisters and general population (GP) controls. Methods: We assessed 31 bAN, 31 GP, and 31 affected sisters. Participants completed self-report questionnaires (Empathy Quotient, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire) and two computerized tasks evaluating theory of mind (Story-based Empathy Task (SET), Reading the Mind in the Eyes Task). Between-group differences were assessed using non-parametric tests due to the non-normality of the data. A binary logistic regression was then conducted to evaluate whether specific socio-cognitive variables predicted group membership. Results: bAN showed significantly lower scores than the GP on measures of cognitive empathy and theory of mind, particularly Causal Inference (SET-CI; r = 0.594, p < 0.001), Emotional Attribution (SET-EA; r = 0.520, p < 0.001), and Intention Attribution (SET-IA; r = 0.463, p = 0.001). Logistic regression identified SET-CI as the strongest predictor of bAN status. Other empathy and alexithymia measures showed no significant group differences. Conclusion: These findings suggest that domain-general inferential difficulties-particularly in causal reasoning-may be associated with familial vulnerability to anorexia nervosa in male siblings. Further research is needed to clarify the role of such cognitive traits in the broader context of risk and to inform early identification and intervention strategies

Secure positioning and navigation with GNSS

No full text
As our societies have come to increasingly rely on global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) for many critical tasks and the control of crucial infrastructures, so have increased the incentives to attack them for financial, or political motives. Two kinds of threats are particularly relevant to the GNSS context: jamming, carried out at the physical layer and aiming at denying the service to receivers in a given area, and spoofing, that aims to induce the receiver into computing a false position, velocity or time, by forging or illegitimately modifying the GNSS signal either at the data/message level or at the code/signal level. In this chapter we review the several countermeasures that have been devised, especially against the spoofing threat, both at the data and signal level, and discuss their effectiveness in relationship to the context and the possible side information available to the attacker and receiver. Eventually, we propose novel models for the analysis and design of partial spreading code encryption and for the integration of side information coming from other sensors into the integrity verification for the computed GNSS trajectory

Jamaican culture through Jamaican cinema

No full text
Jamaican cinema is young and has produced few films, yet my hypothesis is that it has nonetheless created a tradition. In fact, an analysis of the films made on the island show that, after The Harder They Come, the first Jamaican film made in 1972, all the later films share with it some common themes and technical features, which were modified and extended with the passing of time but remain traceable to a familiar matrix. Moreover, Jamaican cinema allows the spectator to observe the island’s popular culture, since the films are targeted to a non-sophisticated audience and reflect habits and culture. It thus present languages, music, dance, religions, locations, looks and a general sense of masculinity belonging to the “low culture”, leaving aside the “high culture” cultivated by the academy. Jamaican cinema is therefore a valuable tool for observing the evolution of popular culture in the island during the last forty years.

Monitoring and Modeling Tidally Induced Pore-Pressure Oscillations in the Soil of St. Mark's Square in Venice, Italy

Sea level rise and high tide events are threatening many coastal cities, which require adequate and sustainable protection measures. The historic city centre of Venice (Italy) is often flooded during very high tide events, especially the area of St. Mark's Island, which is at the lowest elevation among all the islands forming the city. To design cost-effective protection interventions to safeguard the historical heritage, a deep understanding of flooding mechanisms and the relationship between groundwater pressure and tidal oscillations is necessary. Geotechnical survey and analyses play an important role in this process. This paper presents the results of a recent monitoring campaign carried out in St. Mark's Island. A simplified one-dimensional analytical model was derived for saturated conditions to understand the key parameters that govern tidal induced pressure oscillations in soil (material properties, geometrical features, and wave properties). Additional features, such as partially saturated soil conditions and two-dimensional effects, were investigated numerically. Results showed that significant pressure oscillations occur in the subsoil, which should not be neglected when considering the stability of horizontal architectural structures, such as the historical mosaics and paving. However, seepage flow rate is small, and thus its impact on the drainage system is limited in terms of water discharge
