The public and social character of love in the history of sociological thought

The starting point of this paper is represented by the research carried out by the study group of Social-One (Iorio, 2014; 2015; Araújo et al., 2015; Araújo et al., 2016; Martins, Cataldi, 2016), which recognised a public dimension and not only the intimate and personal dimension of love in today’s society. Taking as a reference point the work of Luc Boltanski, L’amour et la justice comme competences (1990), the research of the study group has proposed to widen the circle of sharing to go beyond the input from classic sociologists with a new conceptual category of love linked to agape. This path has actually already been begun by some well-known scholars – including Simmel (1907; 1921; 1989; 2001), Sorokin (1954), Giddens (1992), Luhman (1987) and Honneth (1990) – on the shoulders of whom it has already been possible to see the historical path of the transformation of the concept. However, the “agape” action brings something new to the social sciences: agape, in fact, introduces emerging characteristics, which at the same time, is linked to and transcends the way love is understood as “eros” and “philia”, defining itself as a key to gaining insight into a primarily empirical social reality, based on unconditional love of one’s neighbour. On this basis, the paper traces the path that the concept of love has had in the history of sociological thought, enlightening its public and social characters and proposing a research project based on love as agap

Un concept karstique de la sociologie: L’amour comme socialité

    No full text
This essay analyzes love as sociality in the history of the social sciences, highlighting its public dimension. While the first part is dedicated to the classics of sociology, the second part focuses on the thoughts of contemporary scholars and closes with a critical proposal based on overabounding and the priority of the benefit of others. The paper shows how love is a karstic water rivulet that for decades has gone through sociological reflection, sometimes flowing underground, but often on the surface as a fundamental element in public social life

How to Evaluate an Employee’s “Smartworkability”? Life Stories With Daily Dilemmas in a Double-Mixed Research Design

    No full text
Companies often face the need to select and train personnel on the basis of their ability to manage remote work in an adequate and responsible manner, thanks to specific soft skills and a specific attitude to work, that, with a neologism, we can define “smarkworkability.” This case study illustrates how a new tool was invented for evaluating this specific ability of the candidates, combining both quantitative with quantitative techniques and the self-evaluation of the workers with the hetero-evaluation by their bosses. The main novelty of the tool consists in the administration of some stories that come from everyday life dilemmas (e.g., behavior in front of a traffic light, choice of a trip for the holiday, etc.) to the candidate and which allows the employer to evaluate his/her aptitude for smartworking on these dimensions: sense of responsibility, proactivity, loyalty, interpersonal skills, stress management, ability to self-organize, result in orientation, ability to work in a team, and focused communication. The case is a step-by-step guide for understanding the methodological choices adopted for the construction of a useful evaluation tool for companie

Overabounding and social relations: a study of antinomies and the specifics of a concept through a meta-analysis of multiple case studies

The paper presents an empirical analysis of social love, highlighting the meaning and the empirically detectable dimensions of this concept and clarifying some unresolved issues in the theoretical literature on this topic. Thanks to a qualitative meta-analysis conducted on some case studies the paper tries to understand how agape manifests itself in the social dimension and how it differs from other phenomena such as help, altruism and giving to others
