In 1926, a group of seven friends who studied at the Regio Istituto tecnico superiore of Milan –made up of Ubaldo Castagnoli, Luigi Figini, Gino Pollini, Guido Frette, Sebastiano Larco, Carlo Enrico Rava and Giuseppe Terragni– decided to found Gruppo 7. Between 1926 and 1927, the seven young architects published some articles in the journal Rassegna Italiana that are still considered today as one of the founding moments of the new Italian architecture. Ubaldo Castagnoli left the group almost immediately, being replaced by Adalberto Libera and, for this reason, his name disappears from the history of architecture books. The career of this professional developed within one of the most important companies in the country, STIPEL, the Piedmontese and Lombard interregional telephone company (which in 1964 was incorporated into the SIP), with the role of Central Director at the disposal of the General Management of real estate affairs. He also had a long professional relationship with Luigi Einaudi, before and while he was President of the Republic. The work presented below aims to continue the research recently inaugurated on this figure, that is still not adequately investigated, in order to deepen the role of the cultural debate of those years on his vast professional activity, working with the methods and techniques of the disciplines of representation

The following paper presents the first results of the research conducted on the figure of architect Ubaldo Castagnoli, a member of Gruppo 7, an expression of the nascent modern movement in Italy. Considering the conspicuous and unpublished graphic documentation kept in the numerous archives consulted, some reflections on some of his projects and theirs representation at various scales will be proposed

From Benchmarks to Generalised Expectations

A random variable can be equivalently regarded to as a function or as a “set”, namely, that of the points lying below (when positive) and above (when negative) its graph. The second approach, proposed by Segal in 1989, is known as the measure (or measurement) representation approach. On a technical ground, it allows for using Measure theory tools instead of Functional analysis ones, thus making often possible to reach new and deeper conclusions. On an interpretative ground, it makes clear how expectation and expected utility, either classical or a la Choquet, are structurally analogous and, moreover, it allows for dealing with new and more general types of expectations including, e.g., state dependence. Starting from the measurement approach and from a decision-theoretical result by Castagnoli and LiCalzi (2006), we present a new representation theorem in the same perspective and, finally, we propose a definition of generalised expectations and two different concepts of associativity that can be imposed to them

    Benchmarking real-valued acts

    No full text
A benchmarking procedure ranks real-valued acts by the probability that they outperform a benchmark β which may itself be a random variable; that is, an act f is evaluated by means of the functional V (f) = P(f \ge β). Expected utility is a special case of benchmarking procedure, where the acts and the benchmark are stochastically independent. This paper provides axiomatic characterizations of preference relations that are representable as benchmarking procedures. The key axiom is the sure-thing principle. When the state space is infinite, different continuity assumptions translate into different properties of the probability P

Control of ColE1 plasmid replication by antisense RNA

    No full text
One of the two major classes of regulatory strategies that control plasmid copy number involves recognition via base pairing between two plasmid-encoded complementary RNAs. The detailed analysis of this control circuitry has revealed some features of regulatory mechanisms based on RNA-RNA interaction that distinguish them from those based on protein-nucleic acid interaction. These features provide a framework with which to understand other regulatory mechanisms based on RNA-RNA interaction, and will aid in the design of efficient artificial antisense RNA systems
