Start-up Success in a Small Island State: A Study among Entrepreneurs in Malta
No full textThis study focuses on entrepreneurs in the small island state of Malta and investigates whether starting up and running an enterprise is facilitated or hindered by being in a small island environment. Specifically it asks (1) whether being on a small island, on the periphery of a major market facilitates or hinders entrepreneurship and start-up success; (2) whether Malta’s cultural context and enterprise environment affect entrepreneurship and start-up success; (3) what the key success factors among Maltese start-ups are; and (4) how are creativity and innovation reflected in Maltese start-ups. Qualitative research among 13 start-ups is supported by telephone-based research among a sample of 90 respondents. Findings contribute to the pool of business expertise and context-specific information from small island states that is often missing from the international literature
Controlling crystallization damage by the use of salt inhibitors on Malta's limestone
No full textParallel text in Spanish and EnglishThe main building stone in the Maltese Islands is the Globigerina Limestone, of which the Lower member is commonly used. This occurs in two types, the durable franka and the more easily weathered soll. Two types of fresh franka (bajda (white) and safra (yellow)), as well as fresh soll stone blocks, were obtained, based on the identification by quarry owners. Their designation was confirmed by geochemistry. Physical and mechanical properties of the three were investigated, including uniaxial compressive strength, water absorption by capillarity, permeability and porosimetry. Porosimetry results confirmed outcomes of previous research work. Soll was found to have a lower overall porosity, but a high percentage of small pores with practically no large pores. Some of the tested stones were then treated with a non-toxic phospho- organic compound containing carboxylic moieties as a salt inhibitor and the corresponding non-phosphorylated compound.peer-reviewe

No full textIl giudizio principale trae origine dal ricorso di due pensionati, già dipendenti di amministrazione provinciale, avverso provvedimenti con cui l’Istituto nazionale della previdenza sociale, gestione ex Istituto nazionale di previdenza per i dipendenti anche dell’amministrazione pubblica (cfr. art. 21, d.l. 6 dicembre 2011, n. 201 «Disposizioni urgenti per la crescita, l’equità e il consolidamento dei conti pubblici», convertito con modifiche in l. 27 dicembre 2011, n. 214), ridetermina in peius i trattamenti pensionistici, disponendo, altresì, il recupero delle maggiori somme erogate medio termine.

Fun and fair, and I don't care: The role of enjoyment, fairness and subjective norms on online gambling intentions
No full textOnline gambling is a fast-growing phenomenon reflected in an industry experiencing rapid growth rates. Effective marketing in the industry requires a better understanding of what drives online gambling intention of recreational gamblers. This study introduces and considers the concept of anticipated enjoyment which, together with perceived fairness and social norm, impact online gambling intention. The resultant research model is tested using mediated-moderated regression among a sample of 270 respondents from an online gambling firm. Results indicate that anticipated enjoyment is an important driver of online gambling intention. Implications for management are discussed and limitations noted
