Beyond servitization. New managerial challenges for manufacturing firms

    No full text
The book aims at providing a new framework for understanding servitization. In particular, it sheds light on how servitization influences business model innovation and the challenges that manufacturers may encounter today. For that purpose, the book is structured in two parts. The first part presents an excursus on servitization, business model and open innovation. Subsequently, the theoretical framework is introduced. This links servitization – intended as a change in the value offering of manufacturing firms from selling products to providing services – to value structure and value network. The second part represents a case analysis carried out using the developed framework. The book represents a scientific contribution in the field of servitization analysis, as well as a pragmatic tool to support firms that desire to move from selling products to providing services

    Business model innovation: a typology

    No full text
Purpose of the paper: The aim of the paper is to provide a typology of business model innovation (BMI) and to clarify its link with strategy. In particular, it focuses on the servitization strategy and shows multiple business model configurations that entrepreneurs may choose from when changing their strategy. Methodology: After a literature review conducted through ISI Web of Science database on 14 ABS grade four and grade three leading journals, published between 2000 and 2014, a new theoretical framework is presented. Baden-Fuller’s and Haefliger’s (2013) business model (BM) dimensions were selected in order to build the theoretical framework and Neeley’s (2008) identified servitization strategies were used in order to clarify the link between business model innovation and strategy. Findings: The literature reviewed shows that extant research has mainly focused on the capabilities and processes behind BMI, but has not provided a typology for BMI. The typology proposed consists of 16 business model configurations that may serve for both academics and practitioners in configuring a business model following a change in the firm’s strategy. Considering the servitization strategy, it is suggested that different servitization strategies require from entrepreneurs to choose between alternative business model configurations. Research limitations: The literature reviewed is limited to top international journals and the paper provides only ad hoc created examples in order to show how different servitization strategies require alternative business model configurations. Research and managerial implications: The theoretical framework proposed might be used as a means of analysing alternative business model configurations by entrepreneurs, and as a means of comparing alternative business model configurations by academics. Originality of the paper: The paper complements existing literature reviews on business model, focusing on BMI. Moreover, it provides a first attempt to link the servitization concept to the business model theme, hence contributing to bridging marketing and strategic management literatures

The role of acquisitions in the development of high-tech start-up: an introductory analysis of the importance of marketing

    No full text
Complementing previous research that has focused on high tech acquisitions, this paper focuses on how an acquirer, that adopts a preservation approach, helps the acquired in growing. Due to the exploratory nature of this research, we performed a single case study. The paper points out that the competencies acquired by the start-up after the acquisition play a significant role in boosting the growth of the start-up. Amongst others, newcomer marketing competencies are crucial for the acquired start-up’s growth in terms of revenues, reputation, and long-term view. The research might be helpful for both academic and practitioners, describing how investments in marketing following acquisitions may help start-ups in boosting their growth

How are companies facing the social media (r)evolution?

As well as it happened in the first digital revolution led by Web 1.0 technology, the advent of the second digital revolution led by Web 2.0 has forced firms to rethink at both their business models and strategies. On the basis of both theory and empirical examples, this paper shows that strong similarities exist between the two digital revolutions. Consistently with old economic and managerial models found in the first digital revolution, we find that companies can choose among three strategies in facing the second digital revolution: to deny, to react or to reinvent themselves. However, as the empirical examples described shown, only outliers are leading the transformations and are redefining business models and practices in their industries.

An Analysis of the Importance of Marketing in the Acquisition Process

    No full text
The established literature on high-tech start-ups’ acquisitions has mainly addressed the challenges of post-acquisition integration and the role of the acquired start-ups in enhancing the acquirer’s technological competencies. However, some acquirers may prefer maintaining high- tech start-ups as autonomous entities, supporting their development. Focusing on this scenario, the aim of this paper is to explore how an acquirer that adopts a preservation approach helps the growth of the target start-up. We performed an in-depth single case study relying on interviews and secondary data collected between April 2021 and April 2023. The paper points out that the competencies acquired by the start- up after the acquisition play a significant role in boosting its growth. In particular, the case highlights the pivotal influence of newcomer’s marketing competencies for the acquired start-up’s growth to increase revenues, reputation, and long-term view, along with the key figure of the mentoring manager. The research is helpful for both academics and practitioners, since it displays start-ups grow thank to the boosting ef- fect of investments in marketing following acquisitions

Un protocollo per la valutazione degli effetti della corrosione sulle strutture in CA in ottica Life Cycle Engineering

    No full text
The novel assessment protocol proposed in this research allows guiding and managing the on-site diagnostic investigation campaign for existing RC structures in order to identify possible Corrosion Risk Scenario and aggressiveness class. The protocol enables defining and calibrating equivalent corrosion damage parameters to be included in the structural models to account for the corrosion-induced damage in the structural assessment. This way, structural performance over time can be assessed. Based on the prediction of Life Cycle structural performances, structural residual life, maintenance management criteria and timing, and major indications on the feasibility of the retrofit intervention or the need of demolition can be derived

Intellectual Property paradoxes in developing countries: the case of software IP protection in Iran

33-42In the context of developing countries, scholars have started to report at least two paradoxical phenomena related to intellectual property (IP) protection: (1) weak appropriability regime despite having fairly good IP laws and regulations, and (2) increased demand for intellectual property rights (IPRs) despite low level of IP protection. Beyond these paradoxes, prior research suffers in varying degree from two common flaws: (a) they either considered de jure or de facto IP laws, but not both, and (b) they did not represent all developing countries, being mostly focused on China with no empirical support. This paper aims at addressing these gaps by exploring both de jure and de facto software IP protection in Iran as a less-researched developing country. The authors look at the de jure software IP protection and, then, empirically investigate the de facto software IP protection in the country. The results show that despite having multiple legal mechanisms for protecting software innovations, Iranian software developers consider the overall level of software IP protection offered as low. Paradoxically, a vast majority of the surveyed software innovators had applied for various available IP rights

How is an airport business model innovated? Evidence from an Italian case

    No full text
This paper investigates how an airport business model is innovated following a change in the legislative environment. Via analyzing an Italian airport, we contribute to extant research on business model in the air transport industry in two ways. First, we introduce a new kind of ownership/governance structure, that of long term concession (i.e. the concession of the comprehensive management to a private company for 30 years). Then, we explore how the business model has been refined over two distinct phases (incubation and generation phases) of the airport development

Web 2.0 enabled business models: An empirical investigation on the BlaBlaCar.it case

    No full text
Web 2.0 technologies are allowing companies not only to interact with communities, enhancing loyalty-based transactions, but also to reach new market segments, previously unreachable by traditional technologies. Facebook, eBay, LinkedIn are considered Web 2.0-based companies able to connect multiple users and generate revenues with ads or offering freemium services. However, there are other companies that use Web 2.0 technologies not as an end by itself, but as a mean through which it is possible to re-invent or extend a traditional business, in some cases monetizing a previously non-monetized market. This paper introduces the concept of Web 2.0-enabled business model defined as a new business model where Web 2.0 is used to construct a social network that connects buyers with sellers. Complementary to extant research that often cites outstanding companies whose business model has integrated Web 2.0 technologies, this paper first provides a descriptive case study on how a start-up company, BlaBlaCar, has introduced a Web 2.0-enabled business model, reaching a new market segment (“hitch-hikers 2.0”) that was previously underserved and then adds empirical results about which Web 2.0 factors are perceived as crucial by the platform’s customers
