Randomized motion planning on parallel and distributed architectures
Motion planning is a fundamental problem in a number of application areas, including robotics, automation, and virtual reality! This paper describes a parallel implementation of a motion planning algorithm particularly suited for complex systems characterized by many degrees of freedom. nle implementation is based on the concurrent exploration of the search space by a randomized planner replicated on each node of the parallel architecture. All processing elements compete to obtain a solution over the entire search space in an OR-parallel fashion, Reported results refer to a low-cost cluster of PCs and an SGI Onyx2 parallel machine. The experiments emphasize the effectiveness of the approach for complex, high-dimensionality planning problems.. We believe that the approach may, be useful in other complex search problems, especially when the parallel architecture exhibits relatively high communication latency

Training Data Stewards in Italy: Reflection on the FAIR RDM Summer School
“Fair Research Data Management” Summer School in Parma focused on the skills gap in Italy for data stewards. A distinct feature of the Summer School was its aim to bring together participants from different backgrounds and from different countries. The paper is a reflection on the organization of the Summer School and the evaluation received by the participants
The Venture Capital Industry in Europe: Trends and Figures
Development of a programming environment for intelligent robotics
Given the wide range and diversity of proposed architectures for autonomous robotic agents, an essential role can be played by a programming environment not hardwired to any particular architecture. This paper discusses the design of a programming environment for robotic systems, promoting rapid prototyping techniques for building different robotic architectures, while retaining a good efficiency in robot control. The environment has been conceived as the integration of a real-time robotic machine with a full-fledged logic-based system
Multimodal user interface for remote object exploration with sparse sensory data
This paper describes the design and current state of development of a multimodal user interface enabling exploration of remote environments by means of a teleoperated robot. Human-robot interaction consists of visual and tactile feedback to the user and gesture-based tele-operation of the robot The user interface includes surface reconstruction of the remote environment integrating data sampled by tactile and proximity sensors, cutaneous perception of distance information through the vibrotactile actuators integrated in a virtual reality glove (the CyberTouch, from Immersion Corp., Inc.), and an optional streaming of video information for bandwidth-rich settings. Preliminary results show that the VR glove enables the operator to drive the exploration of the remote environment in a natural fashion and to react promptly to the sensed information
