Social values and ethics for communicating the corporate identity
The ongoing changes – as both opportunities and threats – which are affecting the whole corporate system, push companies to look for competitive advantages and differentiation from competitors by making the best use of certain strategic levers; they are mainly represented by intangible resources (as harder to imitate) such as trade marks, brands, intellectual properties, ethics and social values (Colvin, 2007; Pellicelli, 2010).
All these values become more relevant if taking into consideration the company no more as a “single entity” but as a set of “human beings” whose primary object is the production of products and services for a specific market.
Consequently, as a set of human beings the company is more integrated with its reference society too and needs to communicate with both external and internal audience in a more effective and structured manner, covering different expectations, needs and cultures.
On the other hand, the social communication regards tools of sustainable and social statements which aim at underlining the value creation for all the stakeholders inside and outside the organization, as well as the added social and economic sustainable values for the community in which the company operates.
Accordingly, ethical principles and corporate social responsibility values are fundamental drivers for what is called integrated communication policies and are more and more reflected into the company’s mission.
Moreover during the last years – when communicating corporate policies and values – companies have included also their current and potential ethics and social responsibility attitude, as distinguishing factors among competitors.
The Ashridge model (Campbell, Yeung, 1991), confirms the statement: object, values, behaviours and strategies should be coherent and integrated so to give companies a clear orientation on their decisions, strategies and policies.
According to this, the aim of the present paper is to analyze – on both a quality and empirical level – the effectiveness of ethics and corporate social responsibility values as drivers for integrated communication.
A sample of Italian listed food and beverage companies will be considered so to establish if and how ethical principles and sharing corporate values have been built and implemented during the last years in a context which requires the spread of these values for increasing customers’ trust.
The expected results are to demonstrate the link between literature and empirical evidence concerning effectiveness of integrated communication and its impact on company’s financial results and – in particular – on value creation for shareholders
Are corporate values effective drivers for firms? An Italian Cases Analysis
To be effective in achieving corporate goals, strategy has to be consistent not only with profit and market share objectives, but also with principles and values. What is called organizational culture (Shein, 2010) refers to the values and patterns of belief and behavior that are accepted and practiced by the members of a particular organization (Pringle, et al. 1988). Moreover, it can improve firms’ strategic action, in particular when it is developed emphasizing three key groups of stakeholders: customers, shareholders and employees. As literature says: “For a strategy to be successfully implemented, it requires an appropriate culture. When firms change strategies, and often structures, they sometimes fail because they underlying shared values do not support the new approach” (O’Reilly, 1989).
Our study considers a sample of firms - employing at least 250 people and with revenues major than 500.000 euros (last available fiscal years) - present in the territory of Piedmont (North Italy).
The research purpose is to analyze the link between the application of corporate culture principles, firm performances indicators and managerial control systems. Literature, in fact, suggests that values are defined as enduring goals that serve as guiding principles in people's lives (Rokeach, 1973; Schwartz, 1992). Because each organization develops its own unique culture, even organization within the same industry and territory will exhibit distinctly different ways of operating (Wright et al., 1999).
Moreover, we want answer to the following question: does performances control, with a strong corporate culture action, affects firms capacity of attracting capitals and creating value over the years? Which results? Therefore our paper aims to understand which performance measures are used at the various levers of management control in relation to its own corporate culture and values
The intellectual capital and the relationship with shareholder value creation and sustainability results
Purpose – This study examines how intellectual capital can affect firms’ value creation. The aim is to investigate the effects of the best practices’ adopted in this field on shareholders value and sustainability results, considering the human factor as the part of intellectual capital filled from the rising of the knowledge. For this reason managers should maintain skilled people inside the firm, considering a new respect for people. Is analysed the relationship between people management best practices and shareholder value creation. By the other side, the notion of the production of economic and financial value for shareholders is, though, ever more broadened to also take in the social shared “value”. So, in conclusion and for a broader qualitative and quantitative analysis, is also analysed the relationship with sustainability results.
Design/methodology/approach – We propose an approach based on the analysis of the largest companies in Europe according to 2013 rankings. The qualitative and quantitative
analysis is based on the comparison of accounting/market based value measures and social/environmental performance indicators, together with the analysis of best practices
on human resources management which are possible to underline with the case analysis methodology.
Originality/value – This methodology puts in evidence the strong link between people capital strategies and firm value creation and sustainability results. As we aim to prove,
companies giving greater attention to the working conditions of their own workforce not only make people working inside more faithful and involved, but also handle a strategic
lever able to create value for shareholders.
Practical implications – The outcomes of the application could be a suggestion method for managers who want to find new opportunities in managing intangibles inside their
organization and recognise their effects on shareholder value and sustainability results
Human Resource Management as Value Creation Lever in Leisure Sector. An Empirical Analysis from Italian Firms
This paper presents an empirical analysis conducted on the relation between human resource practices and value creation in listed Italian leisure firms. This work reports also about a wider empirical analysis
worked out using a linear regression model adopted on more than 300 Italian firms listed on Italian stock market. As the analysis stressed, human resource performance practice is one of the main variable
that could affect value creation performance but on leisure sector it would be significantly improved to rise higher customer satisfaction and thus better value creation performance
Survey, seismic input and structural modeling of the "Regina Montis Regalis" basilica and large elliptical dome at Vicoforte, northern Italy
This paper illustrates the results, up-to-date, of a wide investigation and research program aimed to establish new advanced bases for the conservation of the "Regina Montis Regalis" Basilica of Vicoforte, in Northern Italy. The Basilica is a building of great historical, architectural, and structural significance, owing its fame primarily to its big masonry elliptical dome, the world's largest of this shape. The dome-drum system has suffered over the years from significant structural problems, partly due to soil settlements, and, to a large extent, arising from its bold structural configuration. In 1983, concerns over the severe settlement and cracking phenomena affecting the structure prompted the decision to undertake inspection, monitoring and strengthening interventions, operated between 1985 and 1987 and followed by the set up of a monitoring system for the measurement of strains, stresses and crack propagation. In the last decade, a new research and investigation program was established, with the scope of improving the knowledge of the construction, interpreting the cracking phenomena through an advanced non linear modelling in the static domain, estimating the structural safety under gravity loads on the basis of limit analysis, and updating numerical models through the comparative examination of the structural response in the dynamic domain. Currently, the program addresses the evaluation and reduction of the seismic risk of the monument. At this purpose, an in-depth, site-specific seismic hazard assessment study has been conducted to define the proper seismic input for the analyses. The program is developed in coordination with national conservation institutions, considering Vicoforte Basilica as a notable case study for the application and assessment of the guidelines recently formulated at national and international level for the protection of cultural heritage in seismic regions. While the first part of this wide program was already reported at SAHC 2006 and in the literature, the paper concentrates on the last developments concerning dynamic and seismic analyse
Soil-structure modeling and updating of the "Regina Montis Regalis" basilica at Vicoforte, Italy
The paper describes one of the most important structural health monitoring pro-gram in Italy, which started in 1983 for the conservation of the "Regina Montis Regalis" Ba-silica of Vicoforte. The Basilica is a building of great historical, architectural, and structural significance, owing its fame primarily to its big masonry elliptical dome, the world's largest of this shape. The dome-drum system has suffered over the years from significant structural prob-lems, partly due to soil settlements, and, largely, arising from its bold structural configuration. The program is developed in coordination with national conservation institutions, considering Vicoforte Basilica as a notable case study for the application and assessment of the guidelines recently formulated at national and international level for the protection of cultural heritage in seismic regions. Currently, the program addresses the evaluation and reduction of the seismic risk of the monument. This paper reports the progresses achieved in the last years of monitoring and analysis of the structure. Past efforts (long term monitoring, non-linear FE masonry modelling and seismic input characterisation) were disseminated also in the previous SAHC editions (2006 and 2012). This time the paper describes the progress in the characterisation of the numerical model developed for the simulation of seismic response of the structure, by taking in account soil-struc-ture interaction and model updating on the basis of experimental modal analysi

Innovation policy and environmental sustainability as strategic tools for reaching higher performances. A regional empirical analysis to fi nd the best practice
Despite the sector or the company’s size, the choice of the strategies is worth; it is about a set of different aspects included by firms into their own strategic and operating procedures. The general aim of this study is to analyse
how Italian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are tackling the challenges by
adopting more responsible and sustainable strategies and tools in order to create
social and economic value and to compete successfully. Moreover, the paper is focused on setting up a rulebook for family business SMEs in which are specified suggestions about overcoming the crisis and achieving the success
