    Monitoraggio in continuo di acque carsiche e interpretazione idrodinamica dei dati: alcuni casi nel Carso Classico

    Il Carso è una idrostruttura complessa, costituita da un bacino di alimentazione di circa 600 km' che si estende nelle province di Trieste e Gorizia ed in territorio sloveno. L 'area sorgentifera è costituita dal sistema delle risorgive del Timavo e del Lisert, che ha portate complessive medie superiori ai 30 m3/s e drena le acque provenienti dalla parte meridionale del bacino (fiume 11mavo Superiore - Reka), dalle perdite dei fiumi Isonzo e Vipacco, che vengono a contatto con i terreni calcarei nell 'area più settentrionale del bacino, e dalle acque di infiltrazione. Lungo le diverse direttrici di deflusso il Dipartimento di Scienze Geologiche, Ambientali e Marine dell 'Università di Trieste ha, da diversi anm installato stazioni per il monitoraggio in continuo dei livelli e dei parametri chimico-fisici delle acque. I punti naturali di monitoraggio sono l 'inghiottitoio di San Canziano (in Slovenia), le rare cavità che raggiungono il livello di base (Abisso di Trebiciano, Grotta Meravigliosa di Lazzaro Jerko, Grotta Lindner, Pozzo dei Colombi, tutti in Italia), le sorgenti (III Ramo del 11ma1'o, Sorgenti di Aurisina) e le depressioni in cui affiora lo falda carsica di base (laghi di Doberdò e Pietrarossa). Vìsta lo diversa tlpologia dei punti di monitoraggio si illustrano le esperienze acquisite sul campo per quanto riguarda le problematiche pratiche di monitoraggio (scelta della strumentazione, installazione, ecc.) e si commentano ed interpretano alcuni esempi di dati. Dato che i risultati ottenuti sono strettamente connessi all 'organizzazione dei vuoti all 'interno dell 'idrostruttura, alla presenza di riserve diverse, alle velocità di deflusso sotterraneo, i dati raccolti danno un contributo fondamentale alla ricostruzione del fùnzionamento idrodinamico del sistema. Gli scenari deducibili sono in alcuni casi confrontabili con situazioni conosciute già nel dettaglio e quindi non costituiscono novità, in altri casi, a ulteriore testimonianza di quanto sia importante nel carsismo ipogeo il monitoraggio "in continuo ", portano a rivedere alcune delle ipotesi formulate durante la centenaria tradizione di studi idrogeologici nel Carso Classico

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Debris Flow Hazard Assessment (Cave del Predil—NE Italy)

    Debris flows are one of the most frequent mass movement processes which develop on the mountain river network. With high flow velocity, long run-out, and high impacts, they are one of the most hazardous types of landslide. The material involved is heterometric debris with an extremely heterogeneous grain size distribution. The present research is focused on the interaction between the potential debris flow deposits from Rio Conzen and Canalone Andrea rivers with one of the four settling slag basins created during mining operations in the Cave del Predil mine (Tarvisio, Friuli Venezia Giulia, NE Italy). The mine is historical, the first written record of its existence dates back to 800BC. It remained active for a long period, and was the cause of dispute between the Italians and Austrians during WWI when the Austrians used a tunnel to transport troops and war material. After 1991 when the mine was closed, some levels were partially flooded in order to grant stability to the mine. The latter was later converted into a touristic area that along with the whole Val Canale valley was hit by an extremely intense alluvial event in August 2003 when more than 100 debris flows occurred. The valley is orthogonal to Val Canale where more intense damages occurred, but the possibility of the occurrence of new events (return period of 300y) is still high. The aim of this study was to create a possible scenario of the event, using FLO-2D software. The scenario obtained allow to study the interactions between debris flow deposits and the slag basins, and provide an understanding of the possibility of a river interruption. Scenarios can be considered extremely useful data to assist in informed future territorial planning of the area providing a good indication for hazard definition

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     A novel 2,3-benzodiazepine-4-one derivative AMPA antagonist inhibits G2/M transition and induces apoptosis in human leukemia Jurkat T cell line

    It has been shown that the antagonism of glutamate receptors activity was able inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis in several neuronal and non-neuronal cancer cell lines. In addition, it has been shown that glutamate might facilitate the spread and growth of leukemia T cells through interactions with AMPA receptors. The aim of the present study was to investigate the modulation of cell cycle elicited by a novel 2,3-benzodiazepine-4- one non-competitive AMPA antagonist derivative in the human leukemia Jurkat T cells. Our results indicated that the 1-(4-amino-3,5-dimethylphenyl)-3,5-dihydro-7,8-ethylenedioxy-4 h-2,3- benzodiazepin-4-one, named 1 g, exerted a significant growth inhibition of leukemia Jurkat T cells in a time and dose dependent manner, arresting the transition of G2/M phase through activation of Myt-1. The molecule also induced apoptosis through the enhanced expression of the pro-apoptotic p53, and the inhibition of Bcl-2, and Bcl-xl, followed by the activation of caspase-3. The results suggested that compound 1 g might act mostly as a cytostatic rather than cytotoxic compound. Al- though further studies are necessary, in order to identify others specific pathways involved in the activity of the present molecule, the presented results identified a novel molecule acting on specific G2/M checkpoint reg- ulation pathway. Finally, our data suggest that compound 1 g might be a good molecule for future development in the cancer researc

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
