Base Isolation from a Historical Perspective
For the development of better design approaches to protect buildings from earthquake damage, base isolation, to reduce the seismic energy impacting on the structure, has represented a change of paradigm since it came to the fore in the second half of the last century. This paper presents a historical overview of base isolation to trace the principal stages of its scientific and technological development. It will show that, although presented as an innovative technique, the basic concept behind base isolation is far from being a modern development. In particular, the paper describes when and under what circumstances the basic principles of base isolation were for the first time conceived, tested and put in practice. One aim is also to give due credit to the actual inventor of the first base isolation device. Starting from that crucial event, the study follows a twofold perspective: on the one hand, it examines in chronological order the main stages of development, as well as the process of innovation by which base isolation has become a mature discipline, and on the other, it looks at the historical sources and the archaeological record searching for potential precursors. The data analysis shows that the idea of loosening the tie between the ground and the structure has its roots in antiquity, as evidenced by a set of construction practices like the interposition of sand or clay layers under the foundations. Although these technical solutions fit well with the basic principles of base isolation, this does not mean, however, that ancient builders had a real understanding of the potential anti-seismic effectiveness of their techniques
In-situ experimental campaign on the covering structures of “Villa dei Misteri” in Pompeii
The archaeological site of Pompeii is located near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania. As known, the ancient Roman city was mostly destroyed and buried under 4–6 m of ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, and it remained covered until the beginnings of archaeological excavations during the second half of the XVIII century. Today, it is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world. With the aim preserving a unique archaeological heritage, the Pompeii Archaeological Park is directing various projects which involve many scientists and expertise. Within this ambit of activity, ENEA has analysed the health state of the modern covering structures of Villa dei Misteri, an exceptionally well-preserved domus enriched by many precious frescoes. To qualify a standard analysis procedure applicable to similar roofing typologies, very common in the archaeological site of Pompeii, a methodology based on a multidisciplinary approach has been developed. This paper is focused on the in-depth diagnostic campaign carried out on the roof structures of the Peristylium, where both timber and reinforced concrete beams have been completely analysed. The campaign has been conducted in two subsequent steps: visual and geometrical survey and then in-situ non-destructive tests for the material characterisation. On the basis of the resulting data, a visual classification has been performed and very useful information for mechanical characterisation has been collected. Comparison between in situ experimental data and Italian code standard values
The determination of masonry mechanical features is one of the major problems to face when the safety level of existing constructions is evaluated, with the purpose to improve their structural performance. The seismic Italian code prescribes that the masonry mechanical characterisation must be defined on the basis of available data analysis, visual investigation and in-situ experimental tests. With reference to the most common masonry typologies, the code also provides ranges of both strength and elastic properties; these values are widely used in engineering practice, so it is essential to assess if experimental data match well with them. This paper provides a contribute for the critical comparison between standard values and field analysis data, achieved from tests performed within a widespread research activity on the Abruzzo architectural heritage, since the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake. Specific diagnostic procedures, consisting in the application of standardised testing sets, have been developed, with the purpose of optimising the number of measures to reach the knowledge levels required by the Italian code. Data are discussed for some masonry typologies, comparing strength values obtained from quick survey forms, in situ experimental campaigns, and codified references. The work can represent a step towards the realisation of a database for the collection of experimental data related to the Abruzzo masonry patterns, aiming at a wider comparison between in situ test and standard values, also considering performance improvements subsequent to the reconstruction activity. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
