The European Policy for Food Quality and the Fischlers Reform
Fischlers Reform of the Cap has introduced economic support to reinforce the range of instruments aimed at promoting food quality. Before the Reform, European Union market intervention for food quality was confined to the regulatory ground. The paper discusses the economic justifications for financial aid in the case of quality improvement and in the case of information circulation and provision of assurance to consumers. The possibility to add new Quality Schemes at the existing ones is criticized because of the information overcrowding. Furthermore, it is argued that a race to the bottom mechanism could be enforced as a result of the introduction of the possibility to settle Quality Schemes on a national basis. The paper also shows that the unsatisfactory functioning of existing Quality Schemes could be better faced by simplification of the whole quality certification system; by a communication effort at a general level and not only for single Quality Schemes; and by a better coordination of the different strategies of the different stakeholders in the food chains.Quality Schemes, Cap Reform, Information, Reputation, Economic Support, Agricultural and Food Policy, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,
Dynamics of CVTs: A comparison between theory and experiments
We present1 an experimental investigation of the
pushing V-belt CVT dynamics with the aim of comparing the
experimental data with the theoretical predictions of the
Carbone, Mangialardi, Mantriota (CMM) model [1]. A very
good agreement between theory and experiments is found. In
particular it is shown that, during creep-mode (slow) shifting,
the rate of change of the speed ratio depends linearly on the
logarithm of the ratio between the axial clamping forces acting
on the two movable pulleys. The shifting speed is also shown to
be proportional to the angular velocity of the primary pulley.
The results of this study are of utmost importance for the design
of advanced CVT control systems and the improvement of the
CVT efficiency, cars' drivability and fuel economy
A multiple time step scheme for multiresolved models of Macromolecules
In hybrid particle models where coarse-grained beads and atoms are used simultaneously, two clearly separate time scales are mixed. If such models are used in molecular dynamics simulations, a multiple time step (MTS) scheme can therefore be used. In this manuscript, we propose a simple MTS algorithm which approximates for a specific number of integration steps the slow coarse-grained bead-bead interactions with a Taylor series approximation while the atom-atom ones are integrated every time step. The procedure is applied to a previously developed hybrid model of a melt of atactic polystyrene (di Pasquale, Marchisio, and Carbone, J. Chem. Phys. 2012, 137, 164111). The results show that structure, local dynamics, and free diffusion of the model are not altered by the application of the integration scheme which can confidently be used to simulate multiresolved models of polymer melts.
