The coming age of pervasive data processing

    No full text
Emerging Big Data analytics and machine learning applications require a significant amount of computational power. While there exists a plethora of large-scale data processing frameworks which thrive in handling the various complexities of data-intensive workloads, the ever-increasing demand of applications have made us reconsider the traditional ways of scaling (e.g., scale-out) and seek new opportunities for improving the performance. In order to prepare for an era where data collection and processing occur on a wide range of devices, from powerful HPC machines to small embedded devices, it is crucial to investigate and eliminate the potential sources of inefficiency in the current state of the art platforms. In this paper, we address the current and upcoming challenges of pervasive data processing and present directions for designing the next generation of large-scale data processing systems.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Data-Intensive System

(NE)DOPUŠTENOST IZMENA UGOVORA O RADU U OKOLNOSTIMA PROMENE POSLODAVCA

The employer and the employee voluntarily enter into an employment contract, mutually agreeing on its content and essential elements, and accordingly undertaking to perform it in its entirety as it reads. However, in case of circumstances that make the obligations of one contracting party difficult to fulfill, or in case the employment contract no longer meets the expectations of the contracting parties, labour legislation recognizes the possibility of amending the employment contract. The institute of amending the employment contract contributes to establishing a balance between the originally concluded employment contract and the circumstances that occurred after its conclusion. The difficulty of establishing a fair balance of the above interests is further complicated if the request to amend the employment contract is made in the circumstances of a change of employer. Then, the question arises whether it is permissible to amend the employment contract at all if the reason for amending the change in the legal identity of the employer, and if so, whether there are certain conditions for its validity and which aspects of the employment relationship could be subject to change. In this paper, the author addresses these and other related questions by analyzing legal solutions, judicial practice and the doctrine.

From English to Romanian: Bob Dylan translated by Mircea Cartarescu

This master dissertation focuses on analyzing the translation ‒ from English into Romanian ‒ of Bob Dylan’s lyrics of the song A hard rain’s a-gonna fall, drawn from the book titled Bob Dylan, Suflare în vânt: 100 de poeme traduse de Mircea Cărtărescu , which contains a selection of one hundred Dylan song lyrics – or poems, as the Romanian author, as many others, rightfully qualifies them – translated by Mircea Cărtărescu, himself a writer of both poetry and prose. Regarding the approach, this study does not rely on any theory of translation ‒ which are often unnecessarily complicated ‒ but it is rather conducted empirically on the basis of linguistic and stylistic principles, following the song text in minute detail, from the first to the last line of verse, in what could be called a vertical approach

YOUNG GLACIATION IN ASTAPUS COLES AND NILOSYRTIS MENSAE, MARS

Glacial modifications of the upper part of the Martian lithosphere *the meteorization mantle ( has long been debated since the initial orbital observations of the Martian terrains in 1978 at a sufficient resolution (Luchitta, 1981). Better image resolution and age calculation tools provided with sufficient data to constrain better the evolution of the glacial area in western Utopia basin and Nilosyrtis area. Here we show that glacial manifestations were complex and formed during two stages recently during the Martian geologic history (8-12 millions years ago). These results are in concordance with the latest models of Mars cryosphere evolution for this area. This article shows also that the morphologic mapping and the morphometric one clearly differentiate between the units and this has consequences on a geologic mapping update for the entire Utopia area.

He politics of amnesia: a modern "idiot" in Lucian Dan Novel Matei Brunul

Never were the ideological state apparatuses more efficient in controlling and manipulating collective memory than during the two great totalitarian regimes that scarred the image of the 20th century. That policy was one of the key elements which ensured the leaders\u27 grip on social life in Nazi Germany and in communist countries. However, it was impossible that memory be reformatted just suddenly, by some sleight of hand: the almost complete erasure of the old beliefs and historical knowledge had to be performed in the first place, and this took some time to accomplish. Thus, in Romania and the other countries of the Soviet bloc, we may speak about a culture of induced amnesia that lasted for a good many years after 1947. The novel Matei Brunul (Matthew, the Brownie), recently published by the Romanian author Lucian Dan Teodorovici, which notched up a remarkable critical success, is the story of a 1950\u27s victim of totalitarian repression who also suffers a head trauma resulting in severe retrograde amnesia. My point in this paper is that if we look beyond the diegesis proper, and if we have in mind Halbwachs\u27s and Ricoeur\u27s insistence on the intertwinement of individual and collective memory, the case of Teodorovici\u27s protagonist acquires a prototypical relevance: the way in which the communist Security leaders attempt to fabricate a new self out of a person\u27s amnesic remainders is emblematic for the politics of memory exercised in that epoch. Besides, as a Ukrainian-born trauma specialist, Maria Tumarkin, remarks, the effects of that kind of politics can still be perceived today in the postcommunist society, where an extensive "social amnesia" can be noticed in matters of history and public beliefs

The contribution of Nicolae Botnariuc to evolutionary biology using systems theory

Early this year, the Romanian Academy commemorated the centennial birthday of the evolutionary biologist Nicolae Botnariuc (13.03.1915 – 01.03.2011; Figure 1). The scientific contribution of Botnariuc has been well recognized within the Romanian community of biologists which fostered influential personalities like Emil G. Racovitza, Constantin Motaş and Radu Codreanu (cf. Iftimovici 1977; Negrea 2007). However, many aspects of his scientific achievements remain largely unknown beyond the Romanian academic space, likely due to publications with a restricted international distribution at the time the academic space of Eastern Europe was still constrained ideologically. The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page. On the basis of the preserved correspondence, archival sources and information from the relevant literature author discusses and argues commonly accepted fact that well known humanist from Šibenik and ecclesiastical dignitary Antun Vrančić (1504 – 1573) was born on 29th May but that exact date of his birth was 30th May 1504. Author has collected all the relevant literature that states Vrančić’s complete birth date, and consequently he has showed that the majority of authors usually have copied this date from the previous literature. In opposition to such practice author of this article tried to argue this commonly accepted birth date, corraborating her standpoint with various arguments and date calculations. The most important sources for her discussion were a letter of Antun Vrančić from 1569, Vrančić’s horoscope from 1569 and genealogy of the Vrančić family from the nineteenth century that are presently kept in Széchény library in Budapest and in State Archives in Rijeka. Beside this argumentation, author also describes life path and achievements of Antun Vrančić.U radu se na temelju saznanja dobivenih analizom Vrančićeve korespondencije, uvidom u neobjavljenu arhivsku građu te kritičkim osvrtom na podatke u stručnoj literaturi, dokazuje da poznati šibenski humanist i crkveni velikodostojnik Antun Vrančić (1504. – 1573.) nije rođen 29. svibnja, već 30. svibnja 1504. godine. Nastoji se višestrukim argumentima i izračunima ukazati na točan dan Vrančićeva rođenja i time ispraviti dosadašnju pogrešku. U radu se također daje pregled života i djela Antuna Vrančića
