    No full text

This research seeks to rescue and analyze excerpts from the written work of the educator and activist from Minas Gerais Maria Lacerda de Moura (1887 – 1945). Maria Lacerda de Moura's work is extensive, with a broad and diverse reference, it is not only linked to a conceptual current, on the contrary, it presents itself as a multifaceted thought. In her writings — whether in her published books, newspaper articles and pamphlets — the author addresses topics whose agendas, even today, sound very progressive, especially for certain groups. We will define how education appears in the context of three major themes, in the writings of Maria Lacerda de Moura, they are: anti-fascism, secularism and feminism. In addition to recovering an important portion of the author's work, we understand that the current political scenario rekindles the need to revisit the history of transgressive thought and action in the history of education, as an element of reflection and a driver of resistance.

Douglas College student research essay submitted as partial requirement for Geography 2213 course as part of the STEP UP (Student Teams Exploring Pervasive Urban Problems) program. Faculty sponsor to submit this research essay to DOOR: Dr. Sarah Paynter. Society is based on material and discursive geographies that shape individuals’ experiences and perceptions. From a social geography perspective, society and geography are mutually constituted and simultaneously (re)produced: they are fluid and filled with meanings. Here, intersecting social categories (e.g., race, class, age, gender, ability) and personal expectations create inequalities and systems of oppression that are reinforced/undermined by institutions, media, geographies, discourses, and interactions. Unfortunately, places are constantly being (re)written in ways that exclude/privilege certain individuals, which reinforce/devalue dichotomies and racialized meanings of society. It is clear racism and other systems of oppression disproportionately affect some groups; the paper will highlight the specific challenges black youth face due to their identities. The present research aims to analyze the overpolicing of Black youth in streets to highlight institutionalized racism in Canada. Not peer reviewedSTEP UP (Student Teams Exploring Pervasive Urban Problems

This present Final Paper shows a case of a business in a Market adjustment period, a women’s clothing and accessories store, Maria Leite – ME. The study in question aims to develop a Marketing plan to the aforementioned company, defining actions that are necessary to achieve their Marketing objectives. In the case of this method of work development, its configuration is an exploratory and descriptive nature with quantitative and qualitative approach. Therefore, they were used as techniques, semi-structured interviews with the founder of the company and an on-line questionnaire was created to measure the level of customers’ satisfaction and loyalty, and finally, a mystery shopping technique to assess competition. From the analysis of the responses got from the on-line questionnaire and then it just revealed that the satisfaction of customers analyzing all the factors of Maria Leite was good and approved by the major, varying the percentage approval from 60% to 100%. Regarding competition, based on the assessment by the mystery shopping technique, it was possible to identify the Myah Store as a stronger competitor, followed by Charlotte and Anne Tessalah stores. Also realized that the current economic environment is not favorable, and tends to remain destabilized in 2016, however, there are no bigger expectations of major political or legislative interference for the next year and that affects significantly the shop Maria Leite. The main point of this store is the good relationship with the customers, it was also possible to identify as a strength point the knowledge of its manager in fashion, graduation related to the theme, constant promotional activities, the point of easy access, constant search for contacts, partners in favor of the store, the style of clothing that cover various age-groups and constant use of networking interactions in social media. The weaknesses of the company are geared mainly to its small time in market, for example, lack of higher annual revenues to spare for new investments and small structure point. A lack of updating the institutional can be highlighted and absence contact with branded fashion names in Florianópolis. The results led the author of this study to develop strategies to get better position to Maria Leite in the environment in which it operates. It has been proposed actions to improve the satisfaction of loyal customers by 13%, attraction of new customers by 12%, increase loyalty of new consumers in 10% sales increase in periods without big discounts by 5% increasing in annual sales. The strategies outlined to achieve the objectives and goals in the Store were simple and free of large financial detachments. Finally, it was concluded that a marketing plan to a store that is in its second year of existence is basal, looking for consolidation in the market and future business expansion

Efficient picosecond x-ray pulse generation from plasmas in the radiation dominated regime

    No full text
The efficient conversion of optical laser light into bright ultrafast x-ray pulses in laser created plasmas is of high interest for dense plasma physics studies, material science, and other fields. However, the rapid hydrodynamic expansion that cools hot plasmas has limited the x-ray conversion efficiency (CE) to 1% or less. Here we demonstrate more than one order of magnitude increase in picosecond x-ray CE by tailoring near solid density plasmas to achieve a large radiative to hydrodynamic energy loss rate ratio, leading into a radiation loss dominated plasma regime. A record 20% CE into ℎ>1  keVhν>1  keV photons was measured in arrays of large aspect ratio Au nanowires heated to keV temperatures with ultrahigh contrast femtosecond laser pulses of relativistic intensity. The potential of these bright ultrafast x-ray point sources for table-top imaging is illustrated with single shot flash radiographs obtained using low laser pulse energy. These results will enable the deployment of brighter laser driven x-ray sources at both compact and large laser facilities.Fil: Hollinger, Reed. Abstract Author: Amanda Rask & Mariaserena Baretta Title: Prussiluskan - en diskursanalys om socionomstudenters syn på socionomyrket Supervisor: Mikael Sandgren Assessor: Maria Bangura Arvidsson The aim of this study was to examine how social work students speak of social work, and what knowledge they consider necessary for a social worker. Our main question to analyze was however how the students described the profession to see how they related to the dominant discourse. The method used for analysis was qualitative. We based our study on six semi structured interviews with social work students from Lund University. In the interviews we mainly asked questions about their background, why they sought the education to be a social worker and their view of the education, and how they experienced the society’s view on social workers and the overall attitude against social work. Our theoretical starting point was social constructionism and Foucault´s theory of power and discipline. We used a critical discourse analysis based on normalization to be able to analyze words that the students used in the interviews. In conclusion, we have discovered two discourses, one which we named the traditional dominant discourse, and one got the name contradictory untraditional discourse. We found however two positions within the normal discourse: street level and macro position. This shows that students think that social workers can work on different society levels. Thus, we were able to find that the majority of students took stand from the traditional social work with a will to help and support exposed people in the society, but found also a contradictory way of thinking. The dominant normal discourse was yet traditional since the students had a traditional mind-set in terms of social work, which has its stand in the historical social work. Key words: social work, traditional discourse, critical discourse analysis, normalization, students

Women's life writing 1760-1830 : spiritual selves, sexual characters, and revolutionary subjects

PhDThis thesis uses print and manuscript sources to analyse and interpret women's life writing at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries. I explore printed works by Catharine Phillips, Mary Dudley, Priscilla Hannah Gurney, Ann Freeman, Elizabeth Steele, Mary Robinson, Helen Maria Williams, Mary Wollstonecraft, Grace Dalrymple Elliott, and Charlotte West and discuss the manuscripts of Mary Fletcher, Mary Tooth, Sarah Ryan, and Elizabeth Fox. Of these sources, five have never been analysed in the critical literature and six have received little attention. Considered as a group, this large corpus of texts offers new insights into the personal and political implications of different models of female selfhood and social being. In chapter one, I compare the religious identities presented in the spiritual autobiographies of Quakers and Methodists. For these women, religious identification provides a powerful sense of social belonging and enables public participation. However, it may also lead to a loss of self in the demand for religious conformity and self-abnegation. In chapter two, I consider the life writing of late eighteenth-century courtesans. These women adapt available models of femininity and female authorship in order to establish themselves as socially connected subjects. However, their narratives also reveal that dependence on the sexual and literary marketplace puts female selfhood under pressure. In chapter three, I explore the eyewitness accounts of British women in the French Revolution. I argue that, for these writers, connecting personal identity to political history is an enabling source of self-definition but it also exposes them to the risks of self-fragmentation. In my focus on the social function of women's life writing, I present an alternative to the traditional alignment of the eighteenth-century autobiographical subject with the autonomous self of individualism. These narratives allow us to reconsider the productive and problematic dialectic between personal expression and representative selfhood, self-authorship and collective narratives, and individualism and social being. They suggest that women's life writing has the potential to be both the self-expression of a unique heroine and the self-inscription of a politicised subject
