Awareness of organisational readiness in ERP implementation process
The literature on ERP is replete with stories of unsuccessful project outcomes. One of the issues that have attracted relatively little research is the level of firm's awareness about organisational problems that can occur in the course of the implementation process. The paper shares some insight into research aimed at identifying organisational requirements able to identify the organisational readiness of the firm to the ERP implementation process. A methodological tool is proposed to develop a prescriptive model firms can adopt in order to measure the level of organisational readiness. Results from three case studies are discussed. The proposed methodology is prescriptive in terms of business process reengineering and change management interventions needed on the basis of the firm's predisposition of its organisational and technical contex

ERP implementation process: a planned-oriented approach for strategy selection
As highlighted by the literature, several cases of failure have emerged all over the world amongst companies implementing ERP systems. This article sets out to propose a methodological approach aimed at identifying technical and organizational capabilities firms should have before the ERP implementation process start, in order to select the more appropriate implementation strategy and the Change Management interventions to support the selected strategy.
The methodological approach has been tested through a validation experiment with the company partner of the research project. Results revealed the usefulness of the methodology in estimate the capabilities that firms should have in order to select the more appropriate implementation strategy. The result is a model that goes beyond descriptive analysis and offers prescriptive advice on how to address the potential challenges prior to and during the implementation processes
Awareness of Organizational Readiness in ERP Implementation Process: Results from Case Studies
The literature on ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems implementation is replete with stories of unsuccessful project outcomes. One of the issues that have attracted relatively little research is the level of firm’s awareness about organizational problems that can occur in the course of the implementation process, and that represents one of the main reason of the large amount of unsuccessful implementation project. The goal of this article is to explore this issue through the use of three case studies from the US realized in the course of a visiting research period the authors were involved in. The data from the case studies is used to demonstrate whether the implementation teams had been aware, before the implementation project started, of the organizational problems and how they were able to measure the organizational readiness of the firm. Based on the unique patterns of the implementation process in each of the three different case studies, broader issues of ERP implementation are explored and directions for future research on change management in ERP implementation are proposed

A planned-oriented approach for EPR implementation strategy selection
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodological approach aimed at identifying technical and organizational capabilities firms should have before the ERP implementation process starts, in order to select the more appropriate implementation strategy and the change management interventions to support the selected strategy. Design/methodology/approach – Capabilities to implement ERP system are selected on the basis of a literature review and through focus group session in collaboration with the company partner of the project. Then, a methodological approach is proposed on the basis of such capabilities. Scales of the capabilities are built, and an algorithm to analyze and evaluate firms’ capabilities is proposed. Findings – The methodological approach has been tested through a validation experiment with the company partner of the research project. Results reveal the usefulness of the methodology in estimating the capabilities that firms should have in order to select the more appropriate implementation strategy. Research limitations/implications – Further research is under development in order to validate the methodological approach through a case study. Practical implications – Starting from the methodological approach a useful tool could be developed to analyze technical and organizational capabilities of the firm, and to select the more appropriate ERP implementation strategy. Originality/value – The methodological approach is the result of a research project based on tight collaboration between academic researchers and IT managers involved in ERP implementation processes. Thanks to such collaboration, tacit knowledge and expertise accumulated by IT managers during ERP implementation processes was explicated and evaluated in the proposed methodology. The result is a model that goes beyond descriptive analysis and offers prescriptive advice on how to address the potential challenges prior to and during the implementation processe
A methodological approach to assess the feasibility of ERP implementation strategy
This paper sets out to assess the feasibility of implementation strategies in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. As highlighted by the literature, several cases of failure have emerged all over the world amongst companies implementing ERP systems. In this respect, the main problems concern the organizational implementation, companies tend to underestimate the difficulties related to it and focus instead on problems concerning technical implementation. The methodological approach presented in the paper takes into consideration both technical and organizational aspects involved in the ERP implementation. The methodology aims at supporting Information Systems management to reduce risks and handle the implementation process in a holistic and integrated way, highlighting the critical interaction between aspects concerning technical and organizational issues. The methodology defined in this study provides useful information for the companies, and can be considered as an assessment instrument capable to predict and manage the risk in implementing ERP systems in firms all over the world
