Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. ZmPIN1a and ZmPIN1b encode two novel putative candidates for polar auxin transport and plant architecture determination of maize
No full textShoot apical meristems produce organs in a highly stereotypic pattern that involves auxin. Auxin is supposed to be actively transported from cell to cell by influx (AUXIN/LIKE AUXIN proteins) and efflux (PIN-FORMED proteins) membrane carriers. Current hypotheses propose that, at the meristem surface, PIN proteins create patterns of auxin gradients that, in turn, create patterns of gene expression and morphogenesis. These hypotheses are entirely based on work in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). To verify whether these models also apply to other species, we studied the behavior of PIN proteins during maize (Zea mays) development. We identified two novel putative orthologs of AtPIN1 in maize and analyzed their expression pattern during development. The expression studies were complemented by immunolocalization studies using an anti-AtPIN1 antibody. Interestingly, the maize proteins visualized by this antibody are almost exclusively localized in subepidermal meristematic layers. Both tassel and ear were characterized by a compact group of cells, just below the surface, carrying PIN. In contrast to or to complement what was shown in Arabidopsis, these results point to the importance of internally localized cells in the patterning process. We chose the barren inflorescence2 (bif2) maize mutant to study the role of auxin polar fluxes in inflorescence development. In severe alleles of bif2, the tassel and the ear present altered ZmPIN1a and ZmPIN1b protein expression and localization patterns. In particular, the compact groups of cells in the tassel and ear of the mutant were missing. We conclude that BIF2 is important for PIN organization and could play a role in the establishment of polar auxin fluxes in maize inflorescence, indirectly modulating the process of axillary meristem formation and development. © 2006 American Society of Plant Biologists

No full textPer sua stessa natura, la megastruttura si definisce per mezzo di un grande telaio ampliabile illimitatamente nel quale si concentrano determinate funzioni. Ospedali, università, fiere, se non intere città come le arcologie di Paolo Soleri, sono state risolte ricorrendo all’audacia delle proposte megastrutturali. In termini generali la megastruttura si compone di uno scheletro principale –una gabbia, una piastra, un nastro– che costituisce il sistema fisso della sua massa formale, di una struttura secondaria “specializzata” di tipo mobile –capsule, cellule, blocchi– e di un terzo sistema dinamico, rappresentato dagli assi trasportistici sovrapposti su più livelli –autostrade, metropolitane, percorsi pedonali. Attraverso l’impianto di base, la megastruttura si presta per essere lo strumento di intervento ordinatore, pensato per gestire e regolarizzare la crescita caotica e incontrollata della città. La megastruttura è “l’esecutivo dell’utopia” e dell’architettura radicale militante. E’ la soluzione compositiva prescelta dall’architettura razionale impegnata a dotare la città di nuove attrezzature pubbliche. Si manifesta come mégastructures trouvées negli avanzati prodotti di ingegneria come le piattaforme di estrazione petrolifera, le dighe, gli hub infrastrutturali, le navicelle satellitari.
La crisi terminale del pensiero megastrutturale è annunciata nel 1973 da Reyner Banham in un ciclo di conferenze tenute alla Facoltà di Architettura di Napoli, significativamente intitolato La Megastruttura è morta – e quindi essa si trasferisce nella Storia dell’Architettura: abbandonata e respinta dai suoi stessi padri fondatori, la megastruttura esaurisce il proprio impeto autodistruggendosi. Tuttavia questa decadenza finale è accompagnata da una serie di progetti esemplari, elaborati agli inizi del decennio. Sul fronte visionario, il rifiuto della componente pratica nell’uso delle megaforme accelera il suo deterioramento fisico. La piattaforma distesa da Elia Zenghelis e Rem Koolhaas su Londra nel progetto Exodus segna il culmine dell’avanzata delle superarchitetture. Il “terribile paesaggio” del recinto nel quale sono rinchiusi i prigionieri volontari dell’architettura è disegnato nello stesso anno (1972) in cui dall’altra parte dell’oceano, Robert Venturi pubblica Learning from Las Vegas, libro per eccellenza antimegastrutturale, che apre alla rilettura della dimensione urbana della città esistente. All’enclave surrealista di Zenghelis e Koolhaas, fa seguito in Italia una scia di lavori di impronta antiaccademica, disinteressati all’ambizione della realizzazione. I giochi delle megastrutture “pop” di Ettore Sottsass raffigurate nel racconto Il pianeta come festival, l’architettura interplanetaria di Superstudio, la struttura urbana monomorfa di Archizoom, se intenzionalmente esprimono una critica anarchica agli strumenti conoscitivi ed operativi della pianificazione corrente, di fatto concepiscono il grande sistema della megastruttura come pura immagine, svuotata del significato originario che si sforza di intenderla quale esito specificatamente architettonico e possibilità concreta permessa dalle moderne ipertecnologie. Altrettanto circoscritta a precisi casi limitati è l’enfasi progettuale degli oggetti colossali ideati per rispondere a incarichi ufficiali. Il centro direzionale di Bologna sviluppato da Kenzo Tange, il quartiere Zen per 12.000 abitanti di Vittorio Gregotti, i progetti presentati al concorso per l’Università di Firenze (in particolare la versione italiana di plug-in city formulata da Leonardo Savioli), il Corviale, le stecche dell’Università della Calabria e il Centre Pompidou chiudono l’età megastrutturale sancendo l’ultimo sussulto totalizzante delle ideologie del Movimento Moderno. L’inevitabile conclusione della ricerca megastrutturale era già scritta nel suo destino e coincide, per esserne contemporaneamente anche l’effetto, con la riscoperta dello spazio ineffabile della tradizione, che dominerà ampiament..

Full text linkWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
