    Bernardo Antonio Vittone: acoustics and architecture in the XVIII century

    Contemporary critics have identified Savoy architect Bernardo Vittone as a major contributor to the establishment of the concept and experience of architecture as the "art of construction" in the 18th century. Vittone edited the first Guarino Guarini's publication , whose mastery of theoretical and scientific aspects he was never credited to have matched. Vittone's approach to architecture was mainly practical, his plans chiefly derived from the rules of mechanics and descriptive geometry. Experience was his main source of inspiration. Designs, plans, domes and vaults are but ways to achieve balance and harmony and so are precision and control of the relation between geometry and acoustics, architecture and music. In his book Istruzioni diverse concernenti l'officio dell'Architetto Civile (Alternative instructions on the civil Architecture) morover he included the second appendix the "Armonic Instructions", within a dissertation on the nature of sound, its propagation in open spaces, in closed ones and its relation with music.     Visual placebo-like effects on subjective assessment of room acoustics: Sound absorption in classrooms

    When studying occupants' environmental perception of well-being in indoor spaces, subjective questionnaires are most often used to evaluate indoor comfort domains. When estimating parameters which can be influenced in some way by certain visual aspects, researchers may question if the obtained results could be affected by other issues. In particular, certain aesthetic aspects, such as indoor furnishing or room shape may have impact on occupants’ perceptions. For this reason, this paper focuses on determining the influence of the visual aspect on occupants’ perception of indoor acoustics. Classrooms were chosen as an example of an enclosed environment; we modified the indoor acoustics of a real classroom twice, inserting false and real sound absorbing panels featuring an identical external layout. Following this, using questionnaires, the indoor acoustics perceived by students were analyzed. Results clearly demonstrate that the sight of false absorbers is sufficient to provide the same perceived acoustics as real absorbers. Since only the visual aspect is varied, a placebo-like effect is assessed. Therefore, this issue can bias results when using surveys as a scientific approach in experimental studies

    Sound absorption performance of sustainable foam materials: Application of analytical and numerical tools for the optimization of forecasting models

    Traditional models used to predict acoustic properties of poroelastic materials are usually applied to fibrous layers or polyurethane foams. However, for new materials like complex cellular foams these procedures may not be applied due to the different cell microstructure. To this aim, the sound absorbing properties of novel sustainable foam materials are investigated as a function of the nature and loading of waste powders and their effects on the microstructure and the acoustic properties. The foams are prepared from naturally occurring alginates that are in situ polymerized. The morphology and the acoustic properties of the foam-cells appear linked to the particle size distribution of the starting powder. Determination of the parameters of Johnson–Champoux–Allard acoustic model (tortuosity, viscous characteristic length, thermal characteristic length, porosity and flow resistivity) was performed using five different forecasting methods, including traditional analytical model for fibrous materials as well as inverse procedure. A new procedure for tortuosity computation of foam is proposed and validated. Transfer Matrix Method calculation of the absorption coefficient was performed and compared with the experimental data, in order to assess the validity of the model. Indirect method technique is demonstrated to be dependent on experimental measurement of thermal characteristic length

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Impact Sound Pressure Level Performances of Basic Beam Floor Structures

    In order to obtain reliable estimations of the impact sound insulation between rooms, it is necessary to know the acoustic performance of each element composing the floors. The contribution of the flanking transmissions, the attenuation of floating floors and the weighted normalized impact sound pressure level of the basic structure need to be determined in order to apply the simplified calculation method according to the EN ISO 12354-2 standard. With the aim of verifying the range of validity of the calculation method proposed by the EN ISO 12354-2 standard for typical basic beam floor structures, a research based on on-site measurements was conducted. This paper provides an analysis in terms of spectrum trend, predicted average weighted normalized impact sound pressure level and reduction of impact sound pressure level obtainable with a generic floating floor typology. The study can represent a starting point for a correct estimation of the impact sound insulation in new buildings and renovation plans
