A study on contestable regions in Europe through the use of a new rail cost function: An application to the Hinterland of the new container terminal of Leghorn Port
No full textIn this paper, the potential hinterland of the newcontainer terminal of the port of Leghorn (Livorno in Italian) is studied.The study actually analyses the competitiveness ofmajor European portswith respect to some of themost contestable regions in Europe. Travel time and monetary costs of railway paths, connecting ports to their hinterland, have been determined.The rail network of a large part of Europe wasmodelled using a graph. To each link, which represents a portion of the rail line, a cost function is associated.The travel time on the link is determined from the average speed, which has been determined from the maximum speed via formulae obtained through linear regression.The few cost functions that exist in current literature for the computation of the cost of a rail link are not detailed enough.Therefore, a new cost function has been developed. All cost components were determined in detail: the staff cost, the amortisation, maintenance, and insurance costs of locomotives and wagons, the cost of the usage of rail track, the traction cost.The traction cost was calculated in detail from all resistances to motion. Moreover, for each rail link, the number of locomotives needed to operate the train and themaximum towable weight were determined. Themonetary value of time in freight transport registers a high variability; therefore, three different optimisations of the paths-by travel times, monetary costs, and generalised costs-between each origin-destination pair were carried out. Beta oscillations during adaptation to inertial and velocity dependent perturbations
No full textMovements are associated with a beta (15-30 Hz) power decrease during movement preparation and a rebound after its termination. Motor learning and practice are characterized by an increase of the rebound. However, the introduction of a sensorimotor perturbation negatively affects such measure. In this preliminary study, we investigated whether two learning processes affect beta electroencephalographic activity: (a) learning to perform a center-out reaching task by moving a passive robotic arm, and (b) learning to reach the same targets in the presence of a velocity-dependent force field. Seven subjects were exposed to the (a), then to the (b) condition. Results revealed that beta power rebound and its latency increased with practice with the passive manipulandum. When the force field was applied, beta power rebounded and its latency immediately dropped, but they started to increase again with the prolonged exposure to the predictable perturbations. These results suggest that increased rebound in beta power reflects cortical activity elicited by the correct prediction of movement outcomes

We have previously examined the antiviral activity of resveratrol on the replication of Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), the etiologic agent of infectious mononucleosis and associated with several types of malignancies of epithelial and lymphoid origin.
In a cellular context that allows in vitro EBV activation and lytic cycle progression through mechanisms closely resembling those that in vivo initiate and enable productive infection, we found that RV inhibited EBV lytic genes expression and the production of viral particles in a dose-dependent manner
Realter: An Immersive Simulator to Support Low-Vision Rehabilitation
No full textThe project REALTER (wearable egocentric altered reality simulator)
exploits immersive technologies and extended reality (XR) environments to support
low-vision rehabilitation, by offering an immersive simulator of low-vision
conditions. Perceiving and navigating the world as low-vision individuals has the
potential of being a useful tool for ophthalmologists and visual rehabilitators to
increase empathy with the assisted population and to improve the existing therapeutic
techniques. Additionally, by analyzing ocular movements acquired during
experimental sessions with healthy-sighted individuals in a condition of simulated
low vision, researchers may collect quantitative data to extend the state of
the art in understanding the behavioral changes of low-vision persons. The project
involved the implementation of an immersive system by using commercial device
tools currently available on the market. The hardware consists of an immersive
virtual reality (VR) headset with an integrated eye tracker and a pair of external
cameras, to provide gaze-contingent altered/extended reality (XR) content by a
pass-through modality. The software can realistically simulate several low-vision
conditions, such as age-relatedmacular degeneration, glaucoma, and hemianopsia,
and simultaneously acquire eye and head movements for data analysis
Does Independence Affect Regulatory Performance? The case of national competition authorities in the European Union

This paper aims at verifying whether formal regulatory independence affects the performance of national competition authorities in the EU member states. The author presents and discusses a statistical analysis which shows that greater formal independence leads competition authorities to investigate more cases and to issue more decisions

No full textIn this essay the author demonstrates that it is possible to reconstruct the figure of Caterina Colombini (1340?-1387) – Giovanni Colombini's cousin – through a group of texts: the hagiography of Caterina, the letters sent to her by Giovanni Colombini and, finally, Giovanni's biography written by Feo Belcari. The author divides his text into four parts: the first part analyzes the content of Caterina's hagiography; the second examines the linguistic form of the hagiographic text; in the third, the author analyzes the latent meaning of the window, a symbolic place where Giovanni and Caterina converse on divine topics; in the last part, to conclude, the teachings that Giovanni gives to Catherine and her spiritual daughters – the Gesuate – are analyzed

No full textThe study proposed here on Mattia De Rossi, a pupil of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and his most trusted collaborator, is part of an investigation that the author is doing on the figure of the architect, making use of an obvious investigative tool: his drawings.
In particular, the exceptional discovery of a bound volume of about 200 drawings of Mattia is a resource of great effectiveness for the study of his professional figure. Among the sheets of the collection, those relating to the construction site of the Galleria Colonna in the eponymous palace in Piazza SS. Apostoli in Rome, are presented.
These drawings explain the important contribution of Mattia and the creative process that led him to the definitive version of the central hall of the gallery. The drawings are also the only graphic documents related to the project of the Galleria Colonna, now only partially known through hypothetical reconstructions.
The case of the Palazzo Colonna is similar to other projects included in the volume, which enlighten us on De Rossi's career, and which explain his position in several important Roman buildings of the second half of seventeenth centur
