Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

No full textBu araştırma, Türkiye'de mimarlık meslek pratiğine ilişkin yapısal sorunları çok boyutlu biçimde değerlendirmek ve bu sorunlara yönelik, ulusal bağlama özgü ancak uluslararası geçerlilik ilkeleriyle uyumlu bir mesleki model önerisi geliştirmek amacıyla tasarlanmıştır. Çalışma, yalnızca mevcut sistemi betimlemeyi değil; aynı zamanda uygulanabilir, veriye dayalı ve kavramsal temelli bir çözüm modeli üretmeyi hedeflemektedir. Bu yönüyle araştırma, tasarım temelli araştırma (design-based research) yaklaşımıyla yapılandırılmıştır. Araştırmada, model geliştirme sürecine yön verecek biçimde hem nicel hem de nitel veriler kullanılmış; bu doğrultuda eşit ağırlıklı eşzamanlı karma yöntem benimsenmiştir. Hem sayısal eğilimler hem de kurumsal yapılar birlikte analiz edilerek araştırma problemlerine bütüncül bir yaklaşım sunulmuştur. Nicel veri kaynağını oluşturan dört paydaş grubundan (lisanslı mimarlar, mimarlık öğrencileri, mimarla çalışan firmalar ve vatandaşlar) çevrim içi anket yoluyla toplam 2040 katılımcıdan veri toplanmıştır. Elde edilen veriler, Türkiye'deki mimarlık pratiğinde mesleki yeterlilik, uygulama deneyimi ve toplumsal güven gibi alanlardaki eksiklikleri ortaya koymuştur. Nitel veri kaynağı ise 11 ülkenin mimarlık mesleğine kabul süreçlerine ve tıpta uzmanlaşmaya ilişkin mevzuat, yönetmelik ve kurumsal belgelerin karşılaştırmalı analizi ile oluşturulmuştur. Bu analiz, önerilen modelin uluslararası sistemlerle uyum düzeyini belirleyerek yapısal bileşenlerinin kuramsal dayanaklarını sağlamıştır. Elde edilen bulgular, mevcut sistemin mesleğe yeterlilik temelli bir geçiş sunmadığını ve uygulama deneyimi, mevzuat bilgisi ve şantiye tecrübesi gibi kritik alanlarda önemli eksiklikler doğurduğunu göstermiştir. Ayrıca, uluslararası sistemlerle yapılan karşılaştırmalar, Türkiye'nin yeterlik, sınav ve sürekli gelişim gibi mekanizmalarda geri planda kaldığını ortaya koymuştur. Tez kapsamında önerilen "Mimarlık Meslek Pratiğini Düzenleyici Ana Model", "Yeni Yüzyıl Türkiye'si Modeli" ve "Motivasyon Kaynağı Modeli" olmak üzere iki alt bileşene sahiptir. Model, yalnızca kuramsal bir öneri değil, aynı zamanda farklı paydaşların görüşleriyle şekillenmiş, uygulanabilirliği yüksek bir reform önerisidir. Bu yönüyle tez, Türkiye'de mimarlık meslek pratiğinin yeniden yapılandırılmasına yönelik bütüncül ve stratejik bir çerçeve sunmaktadır. Sonuç olarak, bu çalışma yalnızca mevcut sorunlara eleştirel bir bakış sunmakla kalmayıp, Türkiye'deki mimarlık meslek pratiği için uygulanabilir, denetlenebilir ve uluslararası geçerliliği olan bütüncül bir reform modeli önermektedir. Çalışma, yasa yapıcılar, eğitim kurumları ve meslek örgütleri için stratejik bir referans niteliğindedir.This research is designed to evaluate the structural problems in architectural professional practice in Türkiye from a multidimensional perspective and to develop a profession-specific model proposal that is tailored to the national context while aligning with principles of international validity. The study aims not only to describe the current system but also to generate a feasible, data-driven, and conceptually grounded solution model. In this regard, the research is structured using the design-based research approach. Both quantitative and qualitative data were utilized to guide the model development process, adopting an equal-status concurrent mixed methods design. By jointly analysing numerical trends and institutional structures, the study offers a comprehensive approach to the research problems. Quantitative data were collected through an online survey from a total of 2,040 participants across four stakeholder groups: licensed architects, architecture students, firms working with architects, and the general public. The data revealed significant deficiencies in areas such as professional competency, practical experience, and public trust in architectural practice in Türkiye. The qualitative data consisted of a comparative analysis of legislation, regulations, and institutional documents concerning professional admission processes in architecture across 11 countries, as well as specialization processes in the field of medicine. This analysis established the theoretical foundations of the model's structural components and assessed its alignment with international systems. Findings indicate that the current system does not provide a competency-based transition into the profession and lacks critical elements such as practical training, legal knowledge, and on-site construction experience. Moreover, international comparisons highlighted that Türkiye lags behind in mechanisms such as professional qualification, licensing exams, and continuous professional development. The model proposed in this dissertation "Main Model for Regulating Architectural Professional Practice" includes two subcomponents: the "The New Century Türkiye Model" and the "Motivational Source Model". The model is not merely a theoretical suggestion; it is a highly applicable reform proposal shaped by the perspectives of diverse stakeholders. In this respect, the dissertation presents a comprehensive and strategic framework for the restructuring of architectural professional practice in Türkiye. In conclusion, this study not only offers a critical perspective on current problems but also proposes a practical, auditable, and internationally relevant reform model for architectural professional practice in Türkiye.
